Staff were friendly. The room with king bed was spacious and well furnished with wardrobe and drawers and bar fridge. The furnishings were all in very good condition and tastefully presented. Large windows and plush drapes added to the atmosphere. The en suite bathroom was modern and clean with sufficient towel rails. The bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet. Very easy to relax and unwind in such a comfortable space. A shelf for toilettries in the en suite would be welcomed.

We stayed at the Canberra Rex Hotel for 4 nights. - Great location, as everything was a few minutes drive away. - Parking was an issue, as there was limited onsite parking and we had to park across the road. It appeared that bar customers got preference over hotel guests. - room was small, pillows were hard, no fan in bathroom. - security guy downstairs was unfriendly, and put a dampener on our arrival. Also, having security loitering around (albeit playing/watching his phone) didn’t create a nice ambience. - whilst it was clean, furnishings and the building has seen better days. - pool/gym is in a separate building. - quiet, despite being on a main road. Though we could hear plumbing/other rooms flushing their toilets in the middle of the night.

I stayed at The Rex in mid March. This was my first night away for a very, very long time so I was thrilled to have an opportunity to treat myself to dinner and a nice hotel. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to be able to throw cash around wily nily so the $150 security bond that has to be paid upon check in for “a lot of amenities” was startling but I was excited to see what the “amenities” would be. Not being a seasoned traveller I may very well have had unrealistic expectations. For example, I assumed there’d been a nice, overpriced mini bar. Maybe it’s a hipster thing I’m too old to recognise, but the 6 teeny, tiny thimbles of long life milk in the fridge seemed quite a Spartan representation of the mini bars I’ve availed myself of in the in the past. Not to worry, I’d come prepared with a nice bottle of wine to have with the room service dinner I’d planned. Again, not being well acquainted with hipster amendments to old school favourites, the al dente fries and splodge of over dressed slaw that constituted “salad” accompanying the almost caramelised chicken schnitzel made me feel very old and very tired. I was supremely grateful for the wine. The room did have a lovely balcony that not only provided sweeping views of the overflowing dumpsters but also an inbuilt wake up service. The beep...beep...beep...crash of the truck coming in to empty the dumpsters at the crack of dawn made an interesting change to my usual alarm and ensured there was to be no sleeping in. This was a shame given the comfortable bed was the highlight of the stay.

We stayed in a Crown Suite on the 4th floor and were very happy with our accommodation. King size bed, enough hanging space for a few days and power points where you need them (we all have devices to charge overnight). The bathroom was one of the best we’ve had with separate toilet and shower, roomy area where the vanity was and automatic lights. The ‘luggage drop’ area near the front door is a great spot to leave your suitcases and there was a spacious sitting room with a sofa and 2 additional chairs. I should add that the ‘armchair’ wasn’t particularly comfortable if you’re going to sit for any length of time but it wasn’t too bad. The staff were friendly and helpful both on arrival and departure and we got a good price through Booking.com which made it pretty good value. Although the website says that you need to pay to get wifi, we had no trouble getting it in our room without having to pay anything. Parking is a bit of an issue. There’s nowhere near enough, which was made worse on the Saturday night when there was a wedding downstairs. On the plus side, there’s a free carpark across the road so we weren’t too inconvenienced despite it being a rainy weekend.

A group of friends were travelling to Canberra for a golf weekend and we chose to stay at Canberra Rex Hotel. From check-in to check-out, nothing was too much trouble and in fact memories and new friendships have been made! Victoria on reception was amazing, she organised our group rooms to be near each other and also organised a table for pre-dinner drinks and dinner. Pre-dinner drinks were at their cocktail lounge, Swan & King, as the Howling Moon rooftop bar was booked out. We thought we were going to be disappointed but the view from the cocktail lounge was just as good and the cocktails AMAZING! After cocktails, we moved across to the Rex Brassiere for dinner - DELICIOUS! Whilst Dining at the Brassiere, It just so happened, that the owner of the hotel and his family were celebrating their sons engagement. The General Manager Jackie (owners daughter)was concerned they might be disturbing our dinner, so kindly shouted us a bottle of Shiraz to enjoy with dinner. After we had eaten the family offered for us to join in the celebrations, which we did! Oh what a night! The Canberra Rex Hotel is a proudly owned family business and the complete package! The rooms were well appointed, newly refurbished and meticulously clean and comfortable. Fabulous bars and restaurant (Friday/Saturday night book in before you go). We will certainly be back!
