Detailed Reviews
I have stayed at this hotel numerous times and have always enjoyed my stay. This week I stayed in one of the newly renovated King suites. What a disappointment. They have obviously spent a lot of money on the rooms but I wonder if the designer has ever stayed there. Completely clear wall between the shower and the bed, do we really need to watch someone in the shower, also an automatic sensor light in the large bathroom area. If anyone gets up in the night to use the bathroom the whole bedroom is automatically flood lit. This light flicks on and off as the person moves. Seems such a shame that all this money has now created a much inferior suite.
They are obviously struggling with the renovations and the coronavirus and breakfast is delivered to the rooms. However coffee was hot but breakfast cold. It will be a while before I stay there again, it was previously my favourite hotel in Canberra.

Hi Passport638845, Thank you for sharing your feedback via this online platform, as well as to myself and my colleague in person and over the phone. I have also followed up our phone call with an email so I do hope you received it. This current situation is certainly providing some difficulties and times of uncertainty for us all, however, it has been wonderful to see our community work together and support one another during this trying time. We, as a locally, family owned business, are using this situation as an opportunity to further enhance our offerings by completing extensive renovations which include new windows in all accommodation rooms, upgrades to our event spaces, an addition of a new cafe and an extensive refurbishment to our common areas. We are completing this work now so that when travel and events can occur as normal again we have a new product for all our guests to enjoy. We do thank the guests who have stayed with us during this time, and have been understanding of the renovations we are completing to make the most of this unprecedented time. The room (suite) you were allocated, as discussed, is our Imperial Suite which has an over-sized bathroom featuring a sauna. The room was specifically designed for couples and we have always received very positive reviews from all of our guests who have stayed in this room. Our King Suites are a different room type which can sleep up to 3 guests and have a different bathroom layout. As we discussed, the Imperial Suite was not a suitable option for two work colleagues to stay in and after speaking to my team regarding your feedback, I can confirm that my colleague offered you a room move on the evening you arrived, of which you declined. We have installed sensor lighting in our bathrooms so that our guests do not need to search in the dark for a light switch, these are also timed and are only activated by movement. I can confirm that the system in the suite you stayed in, is working correctly. Due to current restrictions, we are not permitted to provide our normal (and complimentary) hot buffet breakfast so are instead offering a very generous room service breakfast (complimentary). All meals are made to order and delivered immediately to all of our guests at their desired time. Again, I do apologise that you feel we did not meet your expectations for your most recent stay and as per my email, I would be happy to take care of any of your future bookings accommodation bookings. Kind Regards, Jackie

I had booked this hotel before COVID happened and chose not to cancel. The one time I had stayed at this hotel was 18 years ago and I didn't really like it then. After reading about its improvements and upgrade, I decided to try Rex Hotel again as its proximity to town was what I was looking for - not too near and not too far.
On arrival, it was obvious that renovations were still in progress and so we were prepared for some construction noise. Yes, the noise was audible but bearable, and besides we were in Canberra to take in the sights, not stay in our room.
There was no issue finding an onsite parking spot given that guest occupancy was down (according to the front desk reception) but I do hope that the makeover would also include the carpark to spruce it up a little.
What surprised us was that entry to the rooms was still key-based as we had expected a proximity or card key to have been part of the upgrade. The room itself, though small, was quite adequate and the bed comfortable. Importantly everything that was provided in the room worked.
We did experience some issues during our stay but they were not so major that we wanted to report them. Our room wasn't made up the first day and I had to go down to the front desk to collect some toiletries. The wifi signal was very poor to non-existent in our room and I would highly recommend that the management put in access points or repeaters in those blind spots. We just switched to our own mobile data to get by but if free wifi is included in the room rate, it should be appropriately provided.
Breakfast was a new experience for us to see condiments and single food items individually wrapped for use. All other orders were individually prepared and served to the table. Our compliments to the management for providing a safe but still enjoyable dining experience.
We didn't utilise any other facilities so can't comment on those. We did like the fact that we could walk to the city centre and also explore the Lonsdale St precinct on foot.
Overall, we enjoyed our time at Rex Hotel and would be quite happy to consider a return stay in future.

Dear cougar_df, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with a review of our hotel, as this does assisting us in growing our business. Overall i am glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to welcoming you back. During the course of the pandemic we have been able to accomplish a large number of renovations which include- brand new double glazed windows to all of our hotel rooms, a brand new facade to the exterior of our hotel, brand new lobby and reception area with the addition of a brand new in lobby cafe as we as well as updating our conferencing spaces with new walls and new carpet. With these soon to be completed, we will then move into our next project which is the installation of a new key lock system which will see the use of proximity keys over the traditional metals keys which we do receive many positive comments on how some prefers these. With these updates we are looking forward to the future and the guest experience we can provide and we look forward to welcome you back sooner than later we hope! Regards Bensen Front Office Manager

I’d always been curious about the Rex’s renovation, so it was nice to try it out.
The regular room was small, and not helped by the bark interior colour scheme. Bed was comfortable, other facilities straightforward (rather than luxe). The room was cold when we arrived, but the split system aircon heated it quickly.
The bathroom was also dark, lined with black tiles. It was accessible for limited mobility, and the shower stall had handrails and a fold-down seating platform.
The real attraction of this hotel is the Howling Wolf bar (over two floors, joined by a staircase, and especially the views of Black Mountain. Get there before sunset, order yourself a ruinously expensive but delicious cocktail and settle in for a spectacular visual display.
Some rooms will have similar views, though not sure if these are premium rooms. Our room had a glimpse of Black Mountain, though through a tiny windows.
The light rail is directly outside on Northbourne Ave which takes you into the CBD, in just a few stops, and the hipster hub Braddon is a short walk away.
On-site parking is outdoors, and limited - first in, best dressed, you can’t book. You may be forced onto a nearby street, where there isn’t much available.

We stayed in a Crown Suite on the 4th floor and were very happy with our accommodation. King size bed, enough hanging space for a few days and power points where you need them (we all have devices to charge overnight). The bathroom was one of the best we’ve had with separate toilet and shower, roomy area where the vanity was and automatic lights. The ‘luggage drop’ area near the front door is a great spot to leave your suitcases and there was a spacious sitting room with a sofa and 2 additional chairs. I should add that the ‘armchair’ wasn’t particularly comfortable if you’re going to sit for any length of time but it wasn’t too bad. The staff were friendly and helpful both on arrival and departure and we got a good price through Booking.com which made it pretty good value. Although the website says that you need to pay to get wifi, we had no trouble getting it in our room without having to pay anything.
Parking is a bit of an issue. There’s nowhere near enough, which was made worse on the Saturday night when there was a wedding downstairs. On the plus side, there’s a free carpark across the road so we weren’t too inconvenienced despite it being a rainy weekend.

The whole team at The Rex have been extremely helpful to us in planning for our upcoming wedding. They have been generous in their time and expertise, allowing us to visit and inspect several rooms, and providing great advice on how to make our stay work as best as possible.
Victoria has been especially helpful, patient and understanding.
Additionally, the quality of the hotel and its furnishings is outstanding.
Thank you all.

The Rex was our go to when we visited Canberra. We opted for the weekend package, which included an upgrade to a crown suite, 2 cocktails, appetizer platter and breakfast. After an early start and busy day, I went to put the kettle on for a coffee, only to find the kettle full of rice. I rang and it was taken care of with a replacement, but I would have thought during these times with COVID19 that extra care would be taken with sanitation and cleanliness. As this was clearly visible, it made me feel uncomfortable. The customer relations manager did apologize. There were a few other minor issues.
The bed and pillows were very comfortable. The shower was good. I was not a fan of the bathroom with double frosted doors for the toilet, a single frosted door for the shower and double frosted doors to the bedroom. The automatic light that comes on when entering, does not turn off for an extended amount of time, which is not good at night.
As it was my birthday, we had booked a table at the Howling Wolf. Upon arrival, they informed us, quite curtly that the booking could not be found and there were limited tables but we would only have an hour to eat. With the sun shining fully in my face and nowhere to move, we had to rush down our cocktails, appetizer platter and our dinner. Yes the service was quick, as they wanted us out!! Compared to what the old restaurant used to offer, the food was poor as was the service and atmosphere (loud and echoey).
We will be finding somewhere else to stay next time we visit Canberra.

Dear lissa5, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with a review of our hotel, as this does assist us in growing our business. I was made aware of the issue surrounding the kettle in your room which was quiet disappointing to hear and as stated on the phone we do apologise for that. This room was cleaned by one of our newer staff members and has highlighted the need for further training with this staff member to ensure our hotel standards are being met and we thank you for highlighting this for us. We understand that there was a reservation issue in our Howling Moon Rooftop Bar and we acknowledge the review you provided on that particular Tripadvisor Page as well. We can see that there was a reservation mixed up in terms of the Saturday in which it was booked for. Unfortunately, with the pandemic our Bar which has gone from having a capacity of 100 down to 41 has placed some obstacles for us, though nothing less this is no excuse for the experience you had. It is disappointing to read your comments about returning as we continue to grow and make improvements. I would personally like to look after you on a future stay so we can have you experiencing a true Rex Experience. I will be sending you an email with my direct contact details for that possible future stay as we would like to welcome you back. Once again, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with those reviews and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards Bensen Front Office Manager

I stayed at The Rex in mid March. This was my first night away for a very, very long time so I was thrilled to have an opportunity to treat myself to dinner and a nice hotel. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to be able to throw cash around wily nily so the $150 security bond that has to be paid upon check in for “a lot of amenities” was startling but I was excited to see what the “amenities” would be. Not being a seasoned traveller I may very well have had unrealistic expectations. For example, I assumed there’d been a nice, overpriced mini bar. Maybe it’s a hipster thing I’m too old to recognise, but the 6 teeny, tiny thimbles of long life milk in the fridge seemed quite a Spartan representation of the mini bars I’ve availed myself of in the in the past. Not to worry, I’d come prepared with a nice bottle of wine to have with the room service dinner I’d planned. Again, not being well acquainted with hipster amendments to old school favourites, the al dente fries and splodge of over dressed slaw that constituted “salad” accompanying the almost caramelised chicken schnitzel made me feel very old and very tired. I was supremely grateful for the wine.
The room did have a lovely balcony that not only provided sweeping views of the overflowing dumpsters but also an inbuilt wake up service. The beep...beep...beep...crash of the truck coming in to empty the dumpsters at the crack of dawn made an interesting change to my usual alarm and ensured there was to be no sleeping in. This was a shame given the comfortable bed was the highlight of the stay.

I know little about Canberra but this hotel seems to be in a good location and not too big. In a way, the size means that areas (restaurant, reception, etc) are quite close to each other but honestly they all work and there is very little wait time anywhere. I would definitely stay again. Good breakfasts included in price and this may be just me liking them but the poached eggs already cooked are very good and cooked just perfectly. The restaurant on the top floor was a little crowded but again people moved on fast so there was good seating and a great view

This hotel is more expensive than what we usually stay at (AU$178 per night) and I guess because if that I expected better service particularly for the dining experience.
The room was very good, no complaints. The dining, even taking into account that it was their first opening since the COVID lock-down, was still quite disorganised.
There is just no excuse for taking 30 - 40 minutes to 2 glasses of fruit juice to our table ! seriously!. When the cereal food arrived almost 1 hour (50 mins) after ordering, it wasn't what we ordered. An hour went by before the cooked food arrived.
There is a limited amount of uncovered offstreet parking available

Loved our time at this hotel recently. The staff were nice, the location & facilities were good too. The only negative was that the hotel had giant scaffolding around as currently being renovated. Our room needed fresh paint, new carpet, furniture etc. We invited our friends to join us at the roof top bar" The Howling Moon"and we enjoyed eating while watching the sunset over Canberra
Breakfast could have had better choice, being a vegetarian. Seemed bit expensive when I could eat only toast, cereal & fruit

Dear Avishukla, Thank you for taking the time out of your day to complete our online guest satisfaction survey. We very much appreciate your comment as they do assist us in growing our business. The south side of our property only does have temporarily scaffolding, as we are in the process of upgrading all the windows in the hotel. We are undertaking this project to better enhance our guest experience and cant wait for this to be completed as it will change the façade of the hotel. Our breakfast offering of a full buffet breakfast each morning is an added benefit for guests staying to the hotel as it is complimentary. Thank you again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back soon. Regards Bensen Robards Front Office Manager
