Hotel Kurrajong Canberra boasts a charming fusion of historical elegance and contemporary features, which guests often admire. While the hotel's central location is lauded for its convenience, opinions on value are mixed, with concerns over the cost of dining, parking, and accommodations. While the rooms are generally appreciated for their style and comfort, some visitors have pointed out issues with size and maintenance.
Cleanliness is typically well-regarded, although there have been occasional grievances. The service, however, receives mixed reviews due to reported inconsistencies and slow responses.

A very comfortable hotel in a convenient location. Rooms are small but spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Dining is good, if a little expensive. An open fireplace in the lounge is a good place to be on a cool evening.

We choose to stay here every winter on our way to the snow. We enjoy drinks in the lobby lounge with fire and the art deco style of the hotel.
This year standards appeared to have dropped a little. We sat outside for drinks where most of the heaters were out of gas. Cheeseburger and fries was delicious!
Coffee pods, sugar and some teas were not refilled during servicing of the room.
We were woken each morning by the restaurant music. Understanding this is an old building, a suggestion is too lower the volume of the music first thing of a morning. However, upon mentioning this at checkout we were compensated by having our parking charge refunded.
We ate breakfast one morning at the hotel. Service was slow, my avocado on toast was a little flavourless.
Even though this visit was a little disappointing, I would suggest if you like this style of hotel to book a stay. It’s located in a beautiful area.

Response from Faisal Sayed, General Manager at Hotel Kurrajong Canberra
Responded 27 Aug 2023
Dear stevel179, It's great to hear that you have a tradition of staying at this hotel every winter on your way to the snow and that you appreciate the ambiance of the lobby lounge with the fire and the art deco style of the hotel. However, it's a bit disappointing to learn that this year, the standards seemed to have dropped a little. The issue with the outdoor heaters and the inconvenience of them being out of gas during your stay must have been frustrating. On a positive note, it's good to hear that you enjoyed the cheeseburger and fries. The oversight of not refilling coffee pods, sugar, and some teas during room servicing is certainly something that can impact the overall experience. Being woken up by restaurant music each morning can be bothersome, and your suggestion to lower the volume in the mornings seems reasonable. It's nice to know that the hotel took your feedback seriously and compensated you by refunding your parking charge. While this visit may not have been as on point as previous years, it's clear that you still have an appreciation for the style and location of the hotel. I can assure you that your feedback will help us make improvements for future visits. Thank you for sharing your experience! Best Regards, Faisal Sayed

Very comfortable rooms and an excellent breakfast. We appreciated that our request to allocate us nearby rooms on the upper floor was met. The carpark on the hotel grounds is much easier to use than the one in the side street.

Hotel Kurrajong is in a great location being very close to many of Canberra's main attractions.
Our room was clean and well maintained for our stay but had some minor issues that needed to be repaired.
The Chifely's bar and restaurant is overpriced and offered a very average menu. Very limited vegan or vegetarian options, and the service was also not great.
Grumpy bar staff, long queues to order drinks and meals didn't help improve our experience.
Two and a half stars for the Hotel Kurrajong.

Dear xtelip, Thank you for your feedback. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed our great location near many of Canberra's main attractions. However, we're sorry to hear that certain aspects of your stay didn't meet expectations. We appreciate your comments regarding the room and the issues that needed attention, and we will address these with our maintenance team to ensure they are resolved. We also regret that your experience at Chifley’s bar and restaurant did not meet your standards. Canberra is a relatively new city so to say this is a historical hotel needs to be understood in context, but it's about as historical as Canberra gets. The art deco style is carried throughout the public areas and the rooms are modern. Having said that the twin rooms are incredibly small. Think the size of a cruise line cabin and you'd be about right. Our initial room was so small there wasn't anywhere to place the bags except the floor where they could have caused a trip hazard (no space available under the beds) so we changed rooms to one slightly larger that had a seating bench we could place the bags on.
The worst aspect of the visit was the pre-paid breakfast. A short menu is provided to choose from with one 'main' and one 'side' included along with facilities to make your own tea/coffee. Unfortunately there wasn't anything on the menu I could eat except toast. One serving of toast (two slices) is considered a main and you cannot get extra slices as a side. That's not enough for me and another serving is $13 (the most expensive two slices of toast I've ever seen) so I started every day hungry.

I booked an overnight stay in one of the Heritage King rooms to attend an event in Canberra early the next morning. After struggling to check-in without my husband there to confirm I could occupy the room (different surnames), I found pubic hair throughout the entirety of the bathroom including on the toilet and sink and in the bath, sink and shower area. The shower head was in need of repairs and would only face the corner without falling out of it's holder.
I actively tried to avoid seeing how unclean the room was as I was travelling with my daughter who was very excited for the experience, but the longer I stayed, the more repulsed I became. There was glitter embedded in the carpet, stains on the towel and bed sheet and in the morning I found a louse on my daughter's forehead.
I was offered a complimentary breakfast to make up for the state of the room and was advised there was a ready-to-go option since I needed to leave early. After 20 minutes it was still not ready and I had to leave without it. Reception then tried to charge me for the order.
Years ago this was the first ever hotel I had stayed at in Canberra and it was so beautiful. This time I was left in tears.

Dear Charleigh, I am truly sorry to hear about your experience, and I sincerely apologize for the unacceptable cleanliness and service issues you encountered during your stay. This is not the standard we strive for at Hotel Kurrajong, and I deeply regret the disappointment and distress it caused you, especially while traveling with your daughter. Your feedback regarding the room’s condition, check-in experience, and the breakfast service is extremely concerning, and I want to assure you that we are addressing these matters with our housekeeping and front desk teams as a priority. Cleanliness, guest comfort, and seamless service should never be compromised, and I deeply regret that we let you down in these areas. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss your experience further and work towards making things right. Please feel free to reach out to me directly at the hotel at your convenience. Once again, I apologize for the frustration and disappointment this caused, and I hope we can regain your trust in the future. Best regards, Grace Russell | Duty Manager

The hotel has a lovely 1920s Art Deco style. The room was spacious with lovely design. Some of the original elements from the 1920s were still evident. The mattress and pillows were old and lumpy; need a refresh. But overall the room was nice. But this place is totally let down by food. Service was very slow and had to chase multiple times. By the time one dish came out it was cold. It was also closed much of the day. And it was horrendously expensive. Given the location, wouldn’t stay here again as you rely on hotel food and drink if you are not near restaurants and cafes.

We chose Hotel Kurrajong for its location, walking distance to the National Gallery of Australia and Parliament House. Its heritage style and sympathetic fit out provided a restful sojourn near the Capital Triangle. Although the room was attractive and king bed comfortable, the temperamental shower and awkward soap and shampoo dispensers made for a lively cleansing experience. As this service seems to be common In Australia I always carry an emergency cake of soap in my luggage.! Food and Beverage staff were skilled, friendly and helpful. Front of house staff need better training about the local area: twice we drove to Manuka to buy groceries, only to discover on our check out day the Barton Food store, a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Overall a restful, classy hotel.

A beautiful heritage hotel with a proud history set in a quiet and elegant part of Canberra, the Hotel Kurrajong is a great option for your stay in the capital in walking distance to many major attractions including the NGV and Old Parliament House, but some of the finer details have been missed. We stayed two nights in the Heritage King with Balcony, which was a nice sized room and well-decorated and appointed, with the style echoing the 1920s vintage of the hotel. The king bed was firm but the linen was luxurious and comfortable. As a nit pick, the bath towels were too small, and there was no bath robe, which I would expect for a hotel of this standard.
While the balcony was an excellent feature, and allowed us to enjoy an outlook of the cedar and oak trees that surround the hotel (and the local birds!), the window sills of our room and the door to the balcony did not appear to have been cleaned for a while, with many dead bugs noticeable, which was in stark contrast to the cleanliness of the rest of the hotel and room. Greater attention to detail from cleaning staff could easily fix this issue.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. We ate at the Chifley's Bar and Grill on one of our nights and for breakfast. The food was good and came quickly, but could do with some adjustments to ensure the quality of ingredients remains up to the standard of the hotel and the prices charged.
Charging a parking fee (per day) seemed excessive given the location of the hotel, as a car or use of a taxi is essential to go to other restaurants, attractions and Civic, but we did not have any issues finding parking at the hotel, so I would recommend using your car during the day but using taxis at night if going further afield.
All in all we had a lovely stay, and I loved the heritage of the hotel, which has been beautifully restored, being modern without losing its character and is surrounded by lovely gardens and trees. However, a few minor adjustments would have brought our experience to a higher level.

I'm so angry. I booked this hotel because it had a restaurant and I wanted to be able to eat a meal by myself, bur not in my room.
I arrived at 2:30 desperate for a late lunch or something, after driving four hours from Sydney. No. The restaurant is shut. It's Sunday and a long weekend. Why? Canberra is awash with tourists for Floriade and I'm paying more than $275 per night for a room?
The first person at reception suggests I wait until 5pm, whe theyn will offer room service. I eat chips and nuts and a couple of glasses of wine.
There's no menu in room, so I scan a QR code. All that's on offer is alcohol. No food at all. I go to reception, desperate for food - any food. The young woman suggests I walk around the corner to Subway or use the QR code when room service starts online.
This hotel prides itself that Prime Minister Chifley made this his home for 11 years. I bet he got food and drink whenever he wanted.
Lovely decor and room, but I need service!

Dear davinab310, We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced during your stay at our hotel. Your feedback is incredibly important to us, and we deeply regret that we failed to meet your expectations, particularly with regards to our restaurant service and the availability of food. We understand that arriving after a long drive and expecting a meal in our restaurant, only to find it closed, was frustrating, especially given the circumstances of a busy weekend due to Floriade, i can assure you that we will certainly review this closely. Additionally, we apologize for the lack of a menu in your room and the limited options available via the QR code. We will take immediate action to ensure that our guests have access to a comprehensive food menu, even during off-hours, I have personally passed on that feedback to our management team. Your feedback has shed light on areas where we can enhance our services, and we assure you that steps are being taken to prevent such situations in the future. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again and provide the level of service you rightfully expect. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Sincerely, Faisal Sayed

No but easy to take a taxi or uber.
Good restaurants in Manuka too. We sit at Belluci, excellent.

Parking is limited due to heritage controls. Old trees would have to be removed to make room for extra car parking. All day, free parking is available on the street outside
Unfortunately, there is shuttle service. But taxi can be arranged in advance.
Kind regards
its a full buffet breakfast. we went at 8am but i am not sure of the actual opening time
