Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have stayed here a few times in a single room with shared bathroom in a very handy location to the city. There is a lovely courtyard area, the rooms & bathrooms have been clean & comfortable and I would definitely stay there again. I recommend University House.

Worst hotel ever! The smoke alarm went off at 730am for no reason at all. The staff didnt know how to handle the situation. They sent a guy over to fix but obviously he didn’t know what to do.The alarm kept sounding off. They told us that they already called maintenance. But maintenance arrived only two hours later. In the meantime the alarm kept sounding off. The hotel didn’t have any in-house maintenance crew and had to rely on the university’s crew. There was no escalation procedures. They lack training and were under supervised. They were so afraid to call their manager. Our concern was never resolved so we decided to leave as fast as can. Our whole day was ruined because of the incompetence of the staff. If you decide to check in to this hotel get ready to suffer leaky bathrooms, old fixtures, under trained hotel staff, poor maintenance of facilities, and unhelpful staff.

Very restful; conducive place to relax or do work. Very convenient to catch the free Culture Loop shuttle outside the entrance of the National Film and Sound Archive just a stone’s throw from University House. From there you can go to other stops on the shuttle route such as Regatta Point, National Library, Questacon, Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House, Canberra Museum and Gallery.

The hotel was clean with classic furniture. Even the lady toilet has a nice sofa area. The bed was so comfortable that I didn’t even wake up once ( I am a light sleeper who usually wake up a few times per night). The staff were extremely friendly - special thanks to the Asian young lady. She was genuinely nice and really helpful in recommending places to go for food and transport. If the University house get to read this, pls compliment her and convey my thanks to her again! Tips to other travellers who don’t drive - you could walk to national museum of Australia (1.3km) or national film (360m) to catch the free culture loop to visit attractions.

We spent 4 nights at University House. Two were good, one was adequate and the last was awful. We came back from a day out to find the room had not been cleaned, the bed had not been made and the bins had not been emptied. With an infant and a toddler this caused real problems. The staff were defensive and surly when I raised this problem. They said they investigated and their records indicated the room had been cleaned. They effectively called me a liar. Steer clear if you want a trouble free stay.

We found the Unit reasonable clean and tidy but on the second level - stairs only [no lifts[] which meant that it was a bit of a struggle with 2 cases and a number of bags going from the car park, across the compound and up the stairs. For tea we went to the local Uni bistro for dinner. It was mainly an Asian menu but reasonably priced and quite pleasant. .

Firstly, this is NOT The Hilton or Sheraton, it it a basic Hotel which is Clean and comfortable, perfect if you're on business or on University business. The rooms though a little outdated, are clean and comfortable with your usual facilities such as a private bathroom, TV, as well as tea and coffee making facilities ect. It is also a short walk to the National Film and Sound Archives an Llewellyn Hall, If you're going to see a show there. I would DEFINITELY stay here if I'm ever in Canberra again.

I loved this hotel. Ive stayed in various sterile, OK Canberra hotels over the years, all ridiculously overpriced so was delighted to discover this wonderful gem. With its 50s architecture and Fred Ward furniture, old-style university ambience and amazing value, this is an absolute find. Very very cheap and good value for money. PLUS a really excellent gourmet buffet breakfast for $20 if you book it the nights before ($25 if on the day). 10am checkout but then nothing to stop one just sitting in the garden, at Fellows Cafe or just in the very comfortable 50s foyer. Wont be staying anywhere else on future visits.

An interesting hotel. It makes great play of its heritage with original furnishings, bathroom fittings, etc – which are functional, but now seem a bit basic and dated. The staff were friendly and helpful. Good value meals are served in the Fellows Bar (useful given the location – see below), but only on weekdays. The hotel is located on the ANU campus, so some way from the main sites of tourist interest. It was rather dispiriting first trying to get there on a bleak wintry Sunday afternoon; but central Canberra is accessible by bus and also by a pleasant lakeside walk. (Canberra really seems to be designed for travel by car!)
