Welcome to Mercure Canberra, a part of Canberra's history Originally known as the Hotel Ainslie, Mercure Canberra was built to provide accommodation for public servants relocating to Canberra to support the transfer of the Commonwealth Parliament. It is one of eight remaining government built hotels or hostels from Canberra's first stage of development in the 1920s and is listed in the Register of the National Estate. Mercure Canberra is historically significant for its important role in the development of North Canberra and the forging of its community identity. While maintaining many original features, the hotel embraces the need for 21st century comforts to ensure you feel welcome and have an enjoyable stay. Our 129 guest rooms are well appointed and have been decorated in keeping with the heritage style of the building. Our Standard rooms are located in the Heritage wing, with the layout and style of room not changing from the hotels' original days. For those looking for a more modern layout, you may wish to select one of our Superior or Deluxe Loft rooms in the newer part of the building. Our guests have the option to dine at our onsite Courtyard Restaurant serving modern Australian cuisine in the evening and a choice of Continental or Buffet breakfast in the morning. Those looking for a more casual dining experience can enjoy Bistro style meals from our Olims Bar & Bistro, a favourite spot for hotel guests and locals to mingle, serving Craft Beers & Cider from our very own Lovedale Brewery Our location is ideal. 600m from the Australian War Memorial commemorating those who serve our country, both past and present. Most of Canberra's National Attractions are within 10 minutes' drive from the hotel and the CBD is and easy 10 minute walk away and offers a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as shops and a Dendy Movie Cinema. Our team at Mercure Canberra look forward to making you feel welcome when you plan your next stay in beautiful Canberra, Australia

The location is decent being close to the Aust War Memorial although I couldn't seem to find a bus into Civic so the options were a 15-minute walk or an Uber/taxi, yet there's lots of parking and easy access for cars.

The room itself is nice, the bed is very warm, the shower and bathroom were great, there's a mini fridge and a kettle with tea & coffee & sugar & milk, there was some free wifi which was slow but was enough to load a few basic websites.

Although I also had a heater issue as the previous reviewer in room 205, I was in room 209 and I had the heater up to 32 degrees and it was blowing out cold air, I kept it on for a solid half hour and it never warmed up. Reception apologised though and offered me free breakfast which was nice of them, otherwise I would've given this a lower rating. Although if this is a problem over multiple rooms, it's not something you want in the middle of a freezing Canberra winter.

Breakfast itself is pretty basic but does the job, $15 to $20 for a simple hot breakfast or cereal with toast is a bit high, and without walking into Civic it's the only option. For something with better flavour, try Civic or Braddon.
Would I stay here again? I suppose if the heaters were fixed & I got a good daily price, sure, but there are better options on Northbourne Avenue.

We enjoy staying at this hotel. The staff are efficient yet welcoming and friendly. The spacious rooms furnished in keeping with the yesteryear theme does not detract from its comfort. The large bed and down pillows are super comfy. The large desk and equally large plush wing chair is a bonus in which to enjoy a book while gazing out upon the immaculate and pretty courtyard. We love the feel the lounges and other common areas provide emulating early Australian times. The restaurant overlooking the courtyard is modern cuisine and our venison and lamb were cooked to perfection. The hotel breakfast is generous with lots of choice. The location is quiet, leafy and just a short drive to Commonwealth Park and all Canberra has to offer. Thanks again for another comfortable stay.

Really enjoyed my four nights. Bed was comfy, and the room was all I needed as a home away from home. Lovely room overlooking the courtyard and really loved the counter lunches and room service, and especially love it was Covid safe. All staff wore masks, lots of handsanitizer around, really appreciated this.

Booked this hotel for work purposes, old charm hotel, has the feel of old English charm.

Check in was quick and easy, got to the room, and found it had an old smell about it, outdated furnishings,

I went to put my phone and car keys on the bedside table when I notice black hairs on the pillows, I rang reception straight away and advised, the young girl apologised and advised I would be moved to another room.

Once I moved to the other room, I checked the bedding, only to find more hairs and a terrible stain on the flat sheet.

I went to reception and asked to speak with the hotel manager, he came and spoke to me, but didn’t want to see any photos that I had taken? I found that very unusual, I asked him, why one of his maids would make a bed with a sheet that was clearly stained, that hairs were found on the inside of the linen.

He wasn’t really interested to be frank, and I was absolutely shocked with how laidback he was about the whole thing, not one room but two were unacceptable.

I would not be able to stay here again or recommend there rooms.

What I would recommend is that this hotel has an overhaul of its Rooms cleaning standards, policy’s and procedures, that all room mattress be closely inspected, sanitised.

This reviewer stayed in this hotel in 2017 and it remains a very good choice. The room was a very good size and was an upgrade from the previous visit; this showed in a bigger and better finished bathroom. The very good breakfast was made to order and was a reasonable price as it included brewed coffee. Off-street parking was available in their own secure parking area (adjacent) at no extra cost.

This hotel has already been recognised as a "Travellers' Choice 2020" and this reviewer can only endorse that opinion.

During Covid the staff have been fantastic with room meals then opening the restaurant for sit down meals. Luca the manager cannot do enough for you. The rooms are tidy but in the middle of Canberra winter could do with a larger heater as it only has a small AC unit. Breakfast is excellent & the choice in the evening is great for dinner. Its close to the War memorial & has a small but functional fitness centre

Was travelling with my elderly father and my young children. We have stayed here before but this was the best of all our stays. As a Platinum accor member they upgraded my father to a room next to our split level suite. My father used to frequent the bar in the 60s and 70s and I did the same in the 80s and 90s so it was a real sense of nostalgia. The complimentary mini-bar restocked each day was appreciated and was one of the better membership returns I've experienced. The rooms were well maintained and perfect. What we really loved was the well maintained gardens and the friendliness of all staff from reception to breakfast to the bistro. My father was quite frail so we ate most meals in the bistro, great range, good promotions, good beers and helpful staff. Nice activity packs for kids as well! Overall a brilliant stay and we would stay here again!

This is an old, poorly maintained property that is definitely not at a four star level. We stayed 3 nights and had to cancel the daily room servicing after the first night when housekeeping changed all of the towels that we did not want changed, failed to provide all linen (we asked if we could be provided with a hand towel so housekeeping placed the bath mat on the hand towel rail). They also removed my own soap that I brought with me. The sheets are thin and marked. The towels are little more than rags, threadbare with threads hanging out everywhere. The pillows are almost completely flat and have an unpleasant smell. Breakfast is chaotic and time consuming. There is no system for the "assisted buffet" and queues are often long and unmoving due to lack of staff and staff not serving people in order. The food at breakfast is cheap and nasty and we certainly wouldn't have gone back after day one if we hadn't pre-paid. The restaurant food is actually good value and very tasty.

In fairness my husband felt that the place was "unpretentious ". I would have agreed with this if the prices were also unpretentious. My Accor app lists the place at $279 a night. This is quite outrageous for the quality of the product.

It is walking distance to the War Memorial and Canberra Central.

Overall a very poor representation of the Mercure brand.

We stayed for one night with our small puppy in a pet friendly room. The pet friendly rooms are cold as the floors are all floorboards (I understand this is because it’s easier to clean up pet mess), however this makes the room cold and a bit uncomfortable. Also if you have a dog who is slightly bothered by noise, the rooms above the pet friendly rooms are not sound proof and you can hear everything, which bothered both our dog and us. We included breakfast in our stay however I had to request a refund at reception for my breakfast as there were two staff running the breakfast who were extremely flustered and the line for the buffet (which you can’t serve yourself) had about 25 people in front of me and didn’t move for 5 mins as no staff were present in the restaurant so I decided to leave without having eaten anything and being in the breakfast restaurant for about half an hour. Overall a disappointing stay for a Mercure and we unfortunately won’t be staying again.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Mecure Canberra. We chose it the first time due to ample available parking as this is always an issue at other city based hotels during busy times. You can choose to pay for boomgate secure parking or park on the surrounding streets which is free and usually available - we always pay for security. The other thing we like about the hotel is that it is a little bit out of the traffic areas and always easy to navigate around the city centre rather than travelling through it all the time. The hotel is quite charming as it is a heritage building and has quite an interesting history. The staff are always courteous and friendly and the rooms well equipped and clean. The one negative is that there are quite a few stairs to access different parts of the hotel and as it's heritage listed lifts are not able to be installed. As this isn't an issue for us, we have always had second story accommodation and our last stay was in their loft apartments - lots of space. We travel to Canberra at least twice a year - this will now be our first choice each time.
Of course, the smoke did cause some problems with alarms being triggered during one of our nights there but this is not something in the control of the hotel staff.
