Three hours drive from BKK and minutes away from the ocean, this secluded resort hidden inside a nondescript village is difficult to find and, for those without wheels, impossible to reach. Because there's nothing to do in the immediate vicinity, it isn't for everyone. If you expect a pool villa with the luxuries of all-inclusive resorts, you won't find any in Sam Roi Yot. Here the lack of beachfront is substituted by a nice swimming pool with jacuzzi. Only those who prefer to (as Thais love to say) "chill, chill" will feel right at home, all their concerns taken care of by Yann and his wife who know the true meaning of Thai hospitality. When we arrived at this little gem after getting lost for an hour, it was already dark and there was nowhere nearby to eat. Yann invited us to join him for a family dinner but as we felt kreng-jai (no English equivalent for this adjective), we chose to have Mama in the comfort of our bungalow (our terrace, to be more specific). Each unit is equipped with an air-con, a flat-screen TV and coffee-making facilities. Rooms in the family bungalow are the cheapest and if no one else is there, the whole apartment will be yours.

Professionally run by a couple who couldn't have been friendlier, this stunning though somewhat sterile resort is of excellent value. We will try to schedule our next visit with Yann's dad so we can have raclette for breakfast again!

Wow Charlie- your review is harsh. You must be from America where you feel entitled, but in reality can't get a cheap dirty motel room for 40 bucks (1200 THB) and feel it is your right to complain about small things. You obviously didn't do your homework- Stella is listed on google maps and shows their exact location. If you wanted beachfront 5 star accommodations you should have stayed in Hua Hin or some other part of Thailand such as Phuket and spent more than 40 bucks.

We stayed at Stella and found the owner and his wife to be the most friendly and accommodating people, who went out of their way for us to make our vacation better than we ever expected. We planned to stay for a week and stayed for three. Loved every minute and had the best vacation ever.

Thai people call you "Cheap Charlie" (Really! Even if your name isn't actually Charlie.) You found the best price in Sam Roi Yod and booked it regardless of location. You have the audacity to moan about a family run resort, complete with dogs, expecting five star service for 40 of your precious USD.

Dogs will be dogs. Chewing shoes is what they do. If you were smart you would have taken them off your feet and carried them inside for the night. The amount that the owner offered you would have replaced your sandals with a top quality pair of Thai brand (Remember- average wage in this country is less than 300 USD per rmonth), and you could have gone home with an amusing story instead of an attitude. It must suck being you.

My wife and I will be going back to Stella for the third time later this year, and we are already crossing off the days on our calendar. The care that they give- on the resort and at their beach bar is exactly what any person who knows Thailand could hope for.

I'd suggest that you stick to the "brand name" hotels and resorts next time, or go to somewhere other than Thailand. US Virgin Islands come to mind. Pay the top dollar - 200 to 300 USD per night - and do your homework first before you book.

I stayed here in March 2013 to check out the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park and was terribly disappointed with my experience. First, the lodging is far over priced for what I got (I paid THB1200 or ~$40). The room was ok, clean and A/C worked, but wifi didn't work in the room and the bed wasn't very comfortable. Second, the location is a 5 km/3 miles away from the beach and down a bad gravel road.

Last, when I awoke and walked outside to put on my sandals (which the owner asked me to take off and leave on the porch) I found one of my sandals in the yard with the straps completely chewed to shreds by the owner's dog. When I show the sandals to the owner, he stares at me blankly and asks "what to do?" I say I bought the sandals for $40 in America and he says that I paid way too much and that you can get sandals for THB200 (~$6-7) in Thailand. I asked him to compensate me for them and he suggested I get them fixed as "Thai people can fix everything". He didn't seem to realize his dog had eaten significant portions of my sandal. In the end all he gave me was essentially a THB250 ($8.50) credit to my bill. The owner's attitude was not a "service oriented, trying to fix the problem and please the customer" kind of attitude, but rather very much of a "screw the customer, minimize how much I will have to pay" attitude.

tl;dr - okay place until there is a problem, overpriced, bad location far from beach, owner doesn't value customers' possessions

We were excited to stay at Stella resort because of the good reviews it got, but after staying there, I don't understand. There are plenty of nice resorts on the beach, about a 10 minute scooter ride away, that look much more inviting and are around the same price.

The hotel is pretty secluded, but not in a nice, romantic or family holiday way. Secluded as in, nothing is around, you need your own transportation to eat or get to the beach or to the park.

The "resort" is overpriced. Its a small plot of land in a residential area with a few bungalows on it. For the price, I expected much more of the room. The bed was uncomfortable. The shower (and sink) didn't work when we got there and we had to ask the owner to turn the water on for us. Once he did, it wasn't very good water pressure and we were told not to use much water. The room didn't have any views and was a bit dark. I didn't understand why there weren't more windows.

The hotel is away from the beach. There is nothing to do in the immediate vicinity. Going to the beach would be a very very long walk. Same for going to the park.

We rented a scooter from the owner. It was in poor condition, making riding on it a bit nerve racking (and we have rented scooters all across Asia). The owner gave us his insider tip on where to go -- the exact same tip that is covered in all the guide books and the reason we came -- but then he gave us the wrong directions!

I wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I was kicking myself when we went for dinner -- a scooter ride away by the beach -- because of all the great housing options there, with plenty of activities and restaurants within a few minutes walk.

I cannot say that the resort itself is unpleasant; I did not actually wind up staying there, but I was treated so poorly after being told I it was not a problem to cancel my reservation (having made the reservation based on misleading information) that I thought I should let other travelers know. I booked this hotel because we specifically wanted to stay on the beach, and a TripAdvisor link on the Stella Resort page that said "photos of pool and beach," led to photos of a lovely beach. Upon calling to confirm two nights before our scheduled arrival, I was told the resort was not only NOT on a beach, but was 3 kilometers away, and that we would either have to rent a scooter from the resort, or call a taxi to take us each way at our own expense. I expressed disappointment and asked if it would be possible to cancel because being on the beach was the ENTIRE reason we'd booked, and the representative said she believed so, but that I should contact the owner. The owner was surly but said it was not a problem to cancel and that he would make a note of it. When I received no refund I emailed and received a reply saying that no refund would be forthcoming because I'd have had to have called 7 days in advance. He did not deny having told me specifically on the phone that I could cancel, but said he'd only meant "it is your prerogative to stay wherever you want. Stella Resort is not a prison, and we cannot force you to stay." Obviously I'd asked the question in order to find out if I could cancel without being charged, and if he'd been truthful I would have gone through with the reservation rather than pay the full amount for the days of the room without staying there, even though I would of course have resented the misleading photos that got us there. Because at the time I had no reason to believe that the Stella Resort owner's assurance that I could cancel was false, I wound up paying two different hotels for the same nights. I can't be too sorry for the way things turned out though -- we did find a FABULOUS small hotel near the beach with WONDERFUL proprietors and had a magical few days in the area (the Long Beach Resort which I'd 100% recommend for location, food, cleanliness, charm and friendly helpful staff!!!) -- but in my personal view I feel that the money the Stella Resort collected from me was stolen and other travelers should know about this unethical behavior on the part of the owner.

Response from LYE71, Manager at Stella Resort
Responded 27 Jan 2018
To say that Stella has stolen your money and treated you unethically is not accurate. As previously mentioned to you in our emailed communications about this, you made your reservation through Agoda. They processed your credit card, and have your money. Any possible recourse or refund is with them. Payments to us from Agoda are settled 30 to 60 days after the guest departure. We don’t have your money, and if they issue a refund to you, we surely won’t be paid for your booking. I told you on the telephone that cancelling your reservation is no problem because it is your prerogative to stay wherever you want. Stella Resort is not a prison, and we cannot force you to stay in a place that you do not wish to be. We never discussed payments or refunds during our telephone conversation. I took your call as being courtesy to let us know that you would not be arriving, and presumed that you were aware of the Agoda website policies and would have contacted them directly to cancel your booking and arrange the refund of the money they collected on your behalf. There is nothing misleading on TripAdvisor posted by us and certainly not in any of our guest reviews that indicates we are a beachfront resort. The only thing remotely possible like this is the default Tripadvisor photo category for “Pool & Beach”. This appears on every single Tripadvisor gallery and on the "photo montage" they create from submitted photos for every property worldwide listed on TripAdvisor. Furthermore, the TripAdvisor and Agoda websites do feature a map for Stella Resort that shows our location accurately. Despite your displeasure with us, we are happy that you did indeed come to Sam Roi Yod and had an enjoyable stay at Long Beach with Bram and his team. We are friends (and rivals) as two of the nicest and best managed small resorts in the area. We hope you will return someday to our natural and unspoiled corner of Thailand.

Wanting to check out phraya nakon cave before venturing out in Thailand, we chose to stay here for a few days. The resort grounds are quite lovely, a great pool with a hillside backdrop . The rooms are private and large. Not the most modern but more than acceptable. Yan is a great host and very accommodating. If you plan to stay in this area, this is a strong recommendation for a short or extended stay. Cutest dogs too.

The resort has everything you need for a relaxing stay , very comfortable and spotlessly
clean. The beach is about 5 minutes drive away, together with places to eat, so you will need transport. As mentioned by many Yaan does a very good breakfast and is very knowledgeable about the area of things to see and do.

This place is a gem, excellent value for money. Great breakfast, pretty surroundings, good quality materials and nice designs. Features a decent pool, pool table, darts, and beautiful garden. Swiss owner doesn't seem to compromise on quality like many other places of similar size tend to do.

Having spent 1 night in Hua Hin, we were disgusted at how crowded it was there and how outdated and dull our hotel was. Stella resort was so charming; beautiful views of the park, clean, friendly owner and cute dogs! The great thing about a Swiss owner, too, is you get an amazing European breakfast! Swiss cheese, salami, real coffee....yum! Very close to the park- jump on a scooter and go explore!
