Over and Above for Others is Actually Their Standard
WARNING: A LONG & DETAILED REVIEW
My “Kuya”(elder brother) Dennis and my “Ate” (my eldest sister) Aileen were actually talking about our stay in Discovery Suites over breakfast. Coming from a PERFECTIONIST family where our default super powers is to actually see what is missing or wrong with anything and everything, it was such a RARE occasion that all of us have absolutely no issue or problem with anything.
My “Kuya” was raving about how they went over and beyond with their service. But what struck me the most was when my “Ate” said, “Actually, they (Discovery Shores) did not do over and beyond. What is over and above for other hotels IS THEIR STANDARD!”
BULLS EYE.
She hit it on the nail’s head perfectly.
I rarely get impressed. I APPRECIATE MANY MANY THINGS IN LIFE as a person who sees blessings around me but I rarely get impressed. But Discovery Suites team was a cut above the rest in terms of their service and they gave us one of the most memorable experiences we had in our lives!
The hotel admits it cannot compare to the newer hotels in terms of facilities and amenities but what sets them apart, their value proposition is their TEAM, the PEOPLE.
Allow me to be specific.
#1 Customer Focus and Delight
You see my family has not been together for 16 years! After my Kuya finally got her US citizenship he decided to come home to surprise my mom. His plan was to pretend to be a waiter who would serve my mom. Apart from the coordination and logistics, the obvious hurdle was how to secure a uniform like that of the staff of Discovery Shores. Being realistic, I told him there was no way the hotel will allow him to borrow anyone’s uniform to maintain branding!
But with no qualms Discovery Shores said YES! And the surprise was a SUCCESS! My mom’s heart almost burst when she finally recognized her son!
Because of this momentous occasion, I set up a professional family photo session by the beach and one of the concepts would be Christmas. We brought Christmas hats and no other decors. To spruce up our Christmas concept, I asked the F&B staff if may borrow their gift decors. And their response surprised me, “How many Ms. Christine?” WHOA. It’s like one of those stories where in you ask someone to jump and their response is “How high?”
Because our stay was very special, our request was to have our rooms beside each other so we can easily be together morning or evening. At first, we were disappointed that our parents who were both in their mid 70’s were separated from me, my Kuya and Ate’s families. We were all on the 3rd floor adjacent and in front of each other while my parents were on the 1st floor very far away from us. But Discovery Suites KNEW BETTER!
My parents were on the 1st floor so it would be easier for them to walk toward the breakfast buffet area which was the Sands Restaurant and it was just a few meters to beach front and a stone’s throw away from the pool. They were keen on SAFETY! With their frail state, the location lessens the risk of them accidents from taking stairs. How amazing is that? So my parents and entire family appreciated their recommendation and decision.
What was new to me was how they personalized the rooms with pictures of my family. They requested for pictures and they printed them and put them in frames so it would have the touch of “Home!”
I love how accessible Guest Services via call or Viber or Whatsapp are for anything and everything you need especially for transport drop off and pick up! They respond IMMEDIATELY and COURTEOUSLY ALL THE TIME!
As for the facilities, amenities and services.
Their rooms as spacious and clean with a VERANDA to enjoy stargazing.
Their beds firm yet the sheets as soft. The pillows like heaven.
They have cute mats beside the bed for the feet.
They have a welcome foot bath which we redeemed at a later time after much beach exposure.
They have a couch, a large table.
They provide a sound system for iphone users. I didn’t use it as my phone was android hahaha. Good thing I have my BOSE with me.
The lighting is lovely as they are soft on the eyes, yellow light.
They have billiards. My daughter and nieces enjoyed playing billiards.
They offer transport to anywhere in Station 1, 2 and 3 so it was easy to get to D’Mall and other establishments!
For me the best was the airport transfer! They have their own van and boat and they even handle the registration. What a delightful experience without the hassle of going through the warm and unhygienic hall of the main port for registration.
# 2 SWIFT ISSUE and CONCERN RESOLUTION
SCENT
I actually have a very keen sense of smell. When I entered my room, I did smell a very faint scent of cigarette smoke remnant. VERY FAINT but it was there. I didn’t think much of it until I visited my Mom’s room and my sister’s room and their room smelled nice. Because the staff would always ask “How is your stay? How are things?” Me, being very vocal and honest, I shared my observation and told them I don’t like to change rooms as it would be a hassle. Harry, who is part of guest services then responded, “Would it be alright if we put a humidifier in your room?” I agreed. In less than 10 mins, it was there and when I entered the room, the faint smell was no longer there! This made me happy! I like the smell of clean (teeth)
SHOWER HEAD
I love that the shower area has a handheld shower and an overhead shower.
I noticed how the overhead shower spills water on the side towards the glass barrier which is a WASTE. I informed Discovery via Viber and in less than 15 mins the engineering team resolved the issue.
They really take every concern seriously and make concerted effort to resolve them.
#3 EXCEPTIONAL STAFF TRAINING
Education and Information
On my 4th day having breakfast, I was really hoping to eat some “danggit” (dried crispy yummy fish) and was disappointed to have found none. I asked Discovery if they have some and their honestly responded that “danggit” would no longer be on the menu… EVER! I figured it was because of its STRONG pungent smell. But Jorgen, the F&B Supervisor shared with me what management told them. “Danggit” is actually an endangered species in Boracay and very critical to the protection and rehabilitation of the coral reefs in Boracay. I actually did my research about this and found this reference: You may google Boracay_Coastal-and-Marine-Information
And because of this my disappointment based on misunderstanding turned into admiration because Discovery Shores EDUCATES its staff and team so they can BEST EXPLAIN the decisions they make even in their FOOD offerings!
WARMEST SERVICE
Every single staff will smiles from the heart! I know when staff smile meekly or robotically as part of SOP but all of the staff in this hotel actually smiles from the heart… showing gratitude that you booked at their hotel and because of this the hotel continues to flourish and provide them work!
When they greet you, look you in the eye, put their hand on their heart and smile then greet you good morning good afternoon or good evening. EVERY SINGLE STAFF. You wouldn’t know who is part of agency, contractual or who is a regular employee. Each one knows they represent Discovery Shores equally.
Because I was really impressed with Discovery Shores, I wanted to meet their Manager to share my feedback and gratitude. They introduced me to their Assistant Director of Operations Mr. Julius Alegre and there I learned from him that for over 2 decades Discovery Shores strongly built a “CULTURE of CARE.” He witnessed the evolution from back 2006 when he was a casual employee and then absorbed to be a waiter then supervisor and to where he is now.
I have been to Boracay countless times since 2002 as I loved coming back here. My default hotel is Henann. Family has been to Movenpick, Fairways, and many other hotels but I can confidently say, Discovery Shores was the best stay we have had!
Thank you Discovery Shores for a memorable experience with you! All teams are amazing from Guest Services, Food and Beverage, Transport, Housekeeping & Security!

Our family has been going to Discovery Shores for the New Year for the past 12 years. We’ve been to different luxury hotels around the world and the level of service they offer is truly unparalleled.
Apart from the great food and well-appointed rooms, it’s the little things that make such a difference. Every single staff member you encounter, from maintenance and housekeeping to security guards and guest relations greets you with a heartfelt smile. Every night they send a different complimentary dessert to your room. At the pool in the late afternoon, they bring snacks, offer to spray Evian mist on your face, and clean your sunglasses/eyeglasses. At the beach, someone neatly folds the clothes left by guests swimming. At New Year’s Day mass, there were more attendees than expected so latecomers had to stand outside the venue. To their surprise, the staff brought more monobloc chairs and gave them umbrellas, fans, and cold towels. Someone commented, “Let’s go to mass here everyday!” After mass, they always hand out cookies.
If you are taking a family photo, the staff take pictures too and a framed photo will appear in your room as a keepsake.
The treatments at Terra Spa are fantastic too, and the food at their Italian restaurant Forno is a must-try.

The hotel staff make this place special. I heard “you can’t turn back time so make every occasion/time as special as it can be” and the staff at the hotel make that true.
The location is perfect. Station 1 is far enough from the crowds yet close enough to be a part of the action. It is a 2-5 minute van ride or a 20-25 minute walk on the beach to the bars/restaurants.
The pool staff constantly walk around to make sure each guest towel is perfect, shirt is folded and drink is filled. Even the lifeguard makes sure every guest is enjoying themselves
Can the american food be better at breakfast, sure, but I’m in the Phillipines so not expecting perfect pancakes. The banana bread was perfect so the leftovers should be turned into french toast the next day. My kids love pasta so one night we went to the Italian restaurant. The Chef was inviting, the pizza was homemade fresh dough and the pasta cooked al dente.
You can look at my other reviews of restaurants and hotels, I normally do not sound like an advertisement. There are some things here that are an 8 out of 10, but the staff go out of their way to remedy any issue you might have. I have traveled many places and have stayed in far too many hotels, the staff here is second to none.
We will definitely come back and obviously recommend the hotel to all our friends and family, including everyone and anyone who reads this review.

From the warm welcome, the delightful welcome drinks, Ysobella's surprise birthday cake that was unbelievably gluten and dairy free and delicious... we truly felt the heartfelt welcome. All the staff were warm and attentive. Pizzas and Pastas at Forno were really good!!! After some river and beach activities, we would always come home to clean rooms with a fresh supply of pandan water which we love. The kids just love the beach at Station 1. Discovery's thoughtful hospitality and the beautifully serene beach was just the perfect combination of a truly gratifying vacation. From all our yearly vacations, it was the first time my daughter said, " I'm not ready to go home yet Mama." 😊 Heartfelt thanks to Ms. Cloven and the staff for making Ysobella's 9th Birthday extra special. ♥️

The location of the resort is excellent, away from the noise. The beach is very safe for little kids to swim in, so I felt comfortable sitting in the shade while they splashed in the shallows. I miss the day beds but the like that the beach is much cleaner. White Beach really has the best sand anywhere, and the best spot is right in front of the resort.
The restaurants serve excellent food, and there's a shuttle that can take you to drop-off points close to other great places to eat and explore. Checking in and checking-out was a breeze, since the hotel already plans arrival and departure with a private shuttle and boat from the airport to the port and back.
Come December, we start counting the days until we are back in Discovery Shores. The service is still the best on the island (maybe even in the country) and really the reason we won't stay anywhere else. Jigs and Gen were wonderfully attentive, as always, and Marian was a big help with the kids during the breakfast rush. The staff that serviced our rooms by the pool were also excellent.

Fix your windows which would not close well (grand signature suite master bedroom)
Airconditioner was broken and was not fixed (two bedroom premier)
Blinds are terrible if you like sleeping till 9am good luck to that because the blinds let ALL the light in (all bedrooms)
Food and service was terrible found HAIR inside my tiramisu which probably took more than an hour to arrive

The fist few days of our 8 day experience was good overall.
The breakfast was great on all mornings and was included in our package. The staff were friendly and willing to help and serve the needs of the customers. Beach area in front of the hotel was clean and some level of service and security was there as well.
My overall rating as average was due to several problems we did have that are not something you would expect from a 5 star resort with the price point they charge
1 Safe was not working when we checked in. Unit had to be changed. It took about 2 hours to sort that out so we could leave the room having our valuables secured.
2 The in room jacuzzi stopped working a few days into our visit and had to be repaired. This was taken care of in a timely manor of a hour or two.
3 The cable signal for the TV was basically our for the last two days of our visit. We were told it was the cable provides problem, however the IT person at the hotel told us that the all rooms had their signal restored and a few rooms were still affected. No offer of moving us to another room was made.
4 The house keeping group started out really good however after about 5 days they stopped providing the full provisions of towels in the bedroom suite.
5 The jacuzzi broke down a second time the last two days of our stay. No effort was made to repair it at that point. The water was turning green and seemed to be in need of cleaning a a full service.
6 The hot water went out on our last day. This was reported and repaired only after reporting it more than once to the hotel.
7 Prices at the restaurant were very high. The quality of the food was generally good on all items we had, but the price point compelled us away from the hotel to find the same or better food for a more reasonable cost.
So, in conclusion I will say that this hotel has great potential, but our overall customer experience was negative due to the noted issues. I did speak to the Manger of customer experience and at the end of our discussion he said he was sorry and offered us a free pizza. Pizza? For all of the above problems? I was not looking for or asking for anything. Just informing him of some defective services. I agreed to let him provide the pizza
At a time of 6 o clock. My kid was going to have it for dinner. 6 o clock came and went so we assumed the manager had forgotten to make the arrangements, so we ordered room service for our last night's meal. After an hour of waiting we called the restaurant to see what the delay was and we were told our delivery was waiting for the pizza to get done. So in the end we bought another meal for our kid and got a pizza that we didn't want or need.
We won't be returning to this hotel again. There are many more options at the same or less price point.

I visit Boracay at least twice a year and Discovery Shores is always my top choice. I thought that I wouldn’t be able to see my favorite beach this year but I am so glad I hopped on a plane and stayed in the resort for a week after being locked down in Manila for over 8 months due to the pandemic.
The resort seems fully equipped and prepared with all of the new safety protocols. I felt safe and secure during my entire stay. The rooms were cleaned well and they’ve made everything as contactless as possible like their QR code menu and acrylic barriers at their breakfast buffet. The service is still impeccable despite having a skeletal work force but they added more staff this month since more people are flying in. If you’re lounging by the pool, be sure to look for my favorite butler jigs! And order the kansi soup when you’re dining at Sands Restaurant. I can’t wait for my next trip back in 2021.

Discovery wasn’t just about the luxurious amenities, extremely clean rooms and facilities, free shuttle service and spacious rooms. It was all that and so much more. What I found was the best part about discovery was finding locals and employees who showed me what service from the heart was! Gen, works by the pool and refills your water once it reaches half the bottle, she gives you clean towels and folds used ones and arranges your items while you’re lounging. She is light, helpful and very cheerful. Jigs, cleans your sunglasses and offers you snacks while you chill by the beach. He also sprays Evian water when you’re tanning. He is a funny guy who is always willing to assist you with anything. Fritz, is that tall fellow you see. He’s the guard who stands by the beach to watch over your stuff. He’s great and is helpful when you need anything brought down to the beach. He can even take your picture if you’d like. He’s always one step ahead of you! Marlon and Jorgen are waiters at the beach front restaurant they’re very attentive and definitely easy to talk to. Joemar, was are night service waiter. Despite all the busy and hectic guests he was always able to spot me from all the hands popping about to order. He was great at his job and really made sure we didn’t feel that the restaurant was so busy! Lastly, Rizlie the bartender. He was great at keeping my fiancée happy. He would even give us cold beverages on the house.
My fiancé and I can’t compare this hotel to anything else simply because the service they provided was remarkable. We came in with no expectations but left with a full heart, tanned bodies and wonderful memories of Discovery Boracay.
I cannot wait until we get back!

Only spending two days in this magnificent resort is definitely not enough. As soon as you land from the airport until you are brought back when you depart, each minute spent under the wing of The Discovery Shores Boracay gives you a sense of luxury that is rare to find in the service industry. The key components of this resort are the people (special shout out to Latrell, Jigs, Marco the bartender, Rene, Paul and Vanessa). Boracay is a beautiful island on its own but the Discovery Shores is definitely a 100 times steps higher when you want to feel that you are in paradise. The smiles of the staff members and their genuine greeting is a clear indication that the hotel loves its staff and the staff shares that warmth unto their guests.
Don't forget to lounge at the beachfront at around 11:00am and be treated to their luxury train of service sweets or take up their offers to clean your sunglasses or get sprayed by an amazing mist of Evian. The facilities are top notch and one cannot leave without a sunset drink at their rooftop bar in a jacuzzi! The breakfast is well-stocked with numerous options to choose from and they will spoil you all day with daily Filipino treats by the poolside. 2. The 1 Bedroom Suite Premier rooms have partial ocean view. For ocean view rooms, we can offer 2-Bedroom Suite, Signature 1-Bedroom Suite, or Grand Signature Suite.
3. The 1 Bedroom Suite Premier are loft-type rooms with jacuzzi at the balcony. Signature Suites are one level however larger in size and has plunge pool at the balcony.
