Detailed Reviews
We loved this place, the view, the rooms, the decorations -design, the staff, the managers, the food...
the downsize, we could not reach the hotel with our small rented car as the road was narrow and needed a stronger car or 4x4, therefore we had parked at a free designated parking area and took the free shuttle pickup provided by the hotel for a 15 min +- bumpy ride (the kids loved that adventure). I still preferred to have our car if i had the choice so we can leave or come at our convenience. Beside that at the hotel we barely had phone signal. The only communication possible was through the hotel WIFI which was suitable for minor browsing and WA chatting. I had plans to WFH during my stay but that was out of question! for us this place is great for a retreat and detox. Our kids liked the place too. Thanks Fred and Jean Marc for doing your best during our stay. Grand Merci

The long hike up the hill in the hotel vehicle is well worth it.
It is isolated but stunningly beautiful.
If you want peace, quiet and beautiful views then this is the perfect location.
The food is also exceptional.
It's not for those who want lots of life around them. It's definitely not suitable for children.
The hotel manager is extremely accommodating and will arrange transport up and down the steep hill as you wish.
We kept a motorbike at the bottom and travelled about freely.
Bring earplugs if you are likely to be upset by the resident cockerel...but that's Bali life.
I loved it and hope to return.

Absolutely perfect place for coming with a partner. It's at the top of a mountain just a few minutes from Amed...though you'll probably want to spend all of your time here ;) Every detail in the rooms is beautifully designed and all of the small comforts are there that make you feel right at home. They have a nice communal / restaurant / pool area as well that is super comfortable where you could spend time if you don't get the private pool / jacuzzi rooms. They also have a shuttle up the 15 minute dirt road that I'd suggest taking especially if you're 2 people on a moto. Definitely will be back!

As other reviewers have mentioned, the resort is set halfway up a very steep hill. The car that waits at the bottom to ferry guests up and down looked a bit small for the 5 of us plus 3 cases when we arrived but never the less we squeezed in ignoring the bald tyres and lack of seats. It really is a road (or lack of road) that requires an suv. It is rather ridiculous. Once at the top we were rewarded with the view and a pleasing looking resort. That is where the enjoyment ended. Whilst looking pretty we found the resort to feel a bit unfinished and very unbalinese. Really you could be anywhere (except bali). The staff are not allowed to place offerings or taint any of the resort with their culture. Its pretty sad. We asked to use the Wi-Fi upon check in which consisted of us handing over our phones in order for the manager to input the password 'just in case the locals get hold of it and start trying to watch YouTube in the parking lot'. Upon showing us to our tiny bungalow he asked for a photo via WhatsApp of our credit card and passports. Seemed very unprofessional but we did as he asked. We spent the next 4 days trying to make the most of what seemed to be a nightmare come true. We tried snorkelling at the beach (great but just too inconvenient going up and down the hill by tiny car), a trip arranged through the hotel to some temples, which was terrible and simply a waste of time since we spent approx 30mins at a temple and about 4 hours driving. It all got a bit too boring feeling like we were stuck at the resort pool once we left our room to walk up the steep hill with young children. Maybe this resort is aimed at couples who would like to pretend they are not in Bali, I'm not really sure? Anyway we checked out early and moved on to another much more amazing resort.
It would be nice if that is where the bad experience of this place ended but unfortunately not. Upon check out we were given a pile of receipts to check through, we had spent $800 during our 4 days which was fine. We agreed for our card could be charged from the picture we had sent as they have no card machine available on premises and all payments must go through head office.
A few days later after we had left another $150 was billed to our card. My husband contacted the hotel to find out why, apparently it was for the extra bed we had used. There was no mention of this while we were at the hotel nor did we request an extra bed upon checking in. We were not asked permission to charge our card it was done without us knowing, is that even legal? My husband confirmed that we had booked for 5 people and had been provided a room with 5 beds? Why were we being charged for an extra bed? They asked for confirmation of our booking which we provided and confirmed that we had indeed booked for 5 people. This was still not enough, we were asked to provide a document showing we had booked for 5 people? We explained that we had booked with booking.com and they had sent us confirmation but no such document exists? We didn't manage to recover our $150.

Response from MathisLodgeManager, Owner at Mathis Lodge Amed
Responded 16 Jan 2020
Mister Leanne, We are happy that you were amazed by the view of Mathis Lodge, of course to get a such view out of all touristic paths, there is a small « price to pay » everybody understand it – we are very happy not to be along the road in Amed center as 99.99% of the hotels and proud of the view and the experience we are able to propose to our guests. The Balinese temple of course existing as in all houses and hotels in Bali, there are 2 temples, one at the top of the land (next the entrance) and one at the bottom (guests are not able to have access easily) Indeed it’s correct that the WiFi (excellent signal for the place where we are located) is only used by the clients, the staff cannot use it during their working time, as everywhere in Bali as well to avoid abuses easily understandable. You mention a tiny bungalow when clients qualify the bungalows as huge and refined… but the fact that you paid for a bungalow of 2 adults but came with 2 adults and 4 children, of course it’s a big problem and we upgrade into a Family Lodge – you seem very dissapointed that we asked a small extra, but do we have to accept a such booking of 2 adults when you arrive at 6 ?. All the other hotels will push you to pay a second lodge at minimum and 2 extra beds – I understand that your actual post here is just based on this fact that we asked to add a small extra, but this totally normal. Please in the future, mention clearly the truth when you book online – if not you will be always confronted with such reaction on arrival. We explained you several times the situation but you didn’t want to listen. But in this post you said that we never mentioned it - We really do our best for you and trying to find the best way for your family. About the bank terminal, indeed by the location where we are, the phone line is very unstable so it’s a real challenge to be able to use it – We have from now a new option directly by WiFi and the problem is definitively solved for your information. Regards

1 night here is 2 nights too many. Avoid this place like the plague.
Let's start with the pros, friendly staff, instagramable, beautiful location.
Now for all the problems we were squeezed into; upon arrival they suggested that we park our vehicles a little ways down and have the shuttle bus pick us up for the final stretch to the hotel. Great we thought! It's a trap. Now we are at the hotel with no options but to eat at the hotel restaurant which will charge you an arm and a leg for very poor quality food. Want to take the shuttle bus down town? Now that you're here, it'll cost you 150k for a trip ;) Gotcha! You're stuck. Dinner for four cost us 900k. The fish was not fresh.
For a family room for four they generously provided about 1.5 liters of water! Hey but if you want more its only 30k for another small bottle. Plus service! Can't even get ice water at breakfast.
There's a phone in your room so you can call reception when you need help! Just kidding. The phone has no guide, we tried pressing 0, 1, 2, 3, 4... you get it. Thankfully we had gotten the number of our driver, to call reception for help the number is 103. We should have tried that. We just needed a couple extra towels, since we booked a family room and only got 2 towels.
The front door locks. You'd think that was standard, but all the other doors facing out don't. That'd be fine if there weren't monkeys that will rummage through your stuff if you leave anything outside.
Come take a couple pics of the place for your instagram feed and then get the hell out.

Responded 23 July 2021
Dear Witya, I would like to come back on the comment that your friend posted as I see he didn t updated it. 1 night here is 2 nights too many. Probably the reason why the young lady (who age wise could me my daughter, the one who insulted me before you left…by the way very lady like, not really in accordance with the kind of standard I am according to you lacking) asked me for a late check out. Which I refused as I had guests arriving later on in that room. Let's start with the pros, friendly staff, instagramable, beautiful location. Thank you and I am genuinely happy you enjoyed those points. Now we are at the hotel with no options but to eat at the hotel restaurant which will charge you an arm and a leg for very poor quality food. Want to take the shuttle bus down town? Now that you're here, it'll cost you 150k for a trip ;) Gotcha! You're stuck. Dinner for four cost us 900k the free shuttle runs all day from 8 am to 6 pm as mentioned in your room, and we indeed charge for transfer in the evening. I am not sure what you mean by poor quality food as the restaurant staff is convinced you none of your dishes came back and when asked how it was you didn t mention anything. That would have been appropriate for us to do something about it. 700k plus tax for 6 main course and 2 desert is certainly the price you will pay in most restaurant or hotel around Bali. . The fish was not fresh. Situated in the mountain as we are, we are using frozen fish for the fish and chips that you had, and again, that plate was also empty when it was cleared from your table. For a family room for four they generously provided about 1.5 liters of water! Hey but if you want more its only 30k for another small bottle. Plus service. As mentioned, we are providing some free mineral water in the room for the coffee and tea amenity on a daily basis. When that amount is finish, we do charge fro extra refill/ or bottle Can't even get ice water at breakfast. Again, you convinced me that the restaurant staff refused to serve you ice water, when they are assuring me they serve you a glass of ice water from the mineral gallon water for breakfast, along with the five fresh fruit juice that you have ordered. I will be happy to provide you with the actual order for your table that day. There's a phone in your room so you can call reception when you need help! Just kidding. The phone has no guide, we tried pressing 0, 1, 2, 3, 4... you get it. Thankfully we had gotten the number of our driver, to call reception for help the number is 103 You might have call the driver on that day, but you also send me a message in the evening, as you had my personal number to ask me for a lighter, I was the one giving you the restaurant number that evening. I don t understand why asking for a lighter you couldn t ask me for towels also or mention any other problem you might have. I am glad to be aware now of missing element in the room such as towels and that my team didn t mention about important number to call from the room telephone. Again you had my personal number and I am not quite sure why you didn t mention those 2 mistakes earlier on. but all the other doors facing out don't Doors are closing properly, I am not quite sure why you haven t been able to do so…. and again we could have helped if we had known at the time. That'd be fine if there weren't monkeys that will rummage through your stuff if you leave anything outside There are no monkeys in the mountain in Bunutan… 1 night here is 2 nights too many. In october 2019 , we decided to go and see by ourself this Island we where hearing so many excellent comments.
As we don’t like to organize too much our stays, we followed an excellent advise from a friend.
We contacted the Mathis collection which is a resort with 3 different locations on the Island. Villa Mathys in Umala, Mathis retreat at Ubud and Mathis Lodge in Amed for a total of 13 nights in Bali.
Our trip was amazing , everything was very well organised, we could have every informations upon our arrival in those 3 different hotels . Organising the day before what we were going to do the next day . This is a great advantage as there are son many things to see but also the need of relaxing some times .
Villa Mathys: Definitely the first place where you have to enter Bali. The villas are extremely charming . This is actually a Paradise.
Mathis retreat in Ubud: excellent location to visit all the surroundings. Karin was there to help us making the right choice for the excursions. The restaurant of the hotel is great with a vue on the rice plantations and some nice white ducks walking along.
Mathis Lodge in Amed: exceptional place isolated in the hills whith a view on the Ovean and a Jacusszzi in the room !!
The restaurant offered amazing italian dishes (and others) that Santos , the Manager always ready to make you feel well, teached to his local employees.
We left there afte 4 days off diving and relaxing . Direct to the airport.
Well We had a perfect trip !!

Amazing location, pool, staff, and views, but comes with some drawbacks.
Stayed for two nights in January. They were kind enough to move us on day 2 after concerns with the first bungalow (#1) which had much discolouration on the roof (which we think is black mold), was very noisy at night (location was right next to a local bar/restaurant and was loud until almost 11pm), and we came home once to some significant animal poop (they claimed it was a gecko) inside. Although the wonderful staff helped move our things, it was still a pain to move. Second night was much better (no mold or noise thankfully) in Cabin #7, but still had some deferred maintenance (screws would randomly fall from the ceiling, shutters were broken so light would enter the room at sunrise, etc). The balcony was much better on night two, and truly felt like we were in the middle of the jungle (which we were!).
As has been mentioned before, this resort is not accessible. Pushing a stroller up the stone paths is not possible- I can only imagine a wheelchair. We have a toddler and we were constantly monitoring their safety. From the steep drops to rotting wooden furniture with loose screws (found multiple places including around pool) to the animal poop (found in our second place as well the last morning), to the fancy marble chess set that we were deservedly charged 150,000 IDR for dropping/breaking a piece, we think they should consider changing it to an adults only property.
It is truly a solitude place with just the 15 or so cabins to stay in and one outdoor restaurant area next to the pool (along with a spa place we didn’t use). I hope a small fitness area or weekly yoga could be considered in the future.
Our dinners were both tasty - on the pricey side for this area, but had great meals both times. The breakfast was a bit hit or miss - our egg scramble was more of a soup consistency- even my wife who likes her eggs runny was disappointed.
Pool is great and the views are amazing. Had a happy hour advertised but didn’t share the hours unless you ask (4-6pm I believe). The drive up is not to be done alone - they provide a shuttle up (on the hour) and one down (on the half hour) which takes 20 minutes or so and is very scenic. It does make it challenging to do things off-property though. All the staff we interacted with were friendly too, and it is the top place in the area according to many, but we left a bit underwhelmed.

All the staff we interacted with were friendly too, and it is the top place in the area according to many, but we left a bit underwhelmed.

After spending sometime exploring the sites around Bali my girlfriend and I were looking for somewhere to unwind before heading back to Europe. I cannot overstate how happy we were at the Mathis Lodge.
It’s hard to point out a single highlight. The view is sensational. From the room we had you could see the valley and ocean all day. The room itself was wonderfully decorated and spacious. The food and drink on offer were delicious and extremely competitively priced. Thirdly the service was second to none. Fredrick went beyond the call of duty to make us feel welcome and relaxed.
I’m just sad we didn’t stay longer. One small word of advice is that I wouldn’t necessarily use the lodge as hub to go and explore. It makes a lot more sense to stay there and enjoy the resort, just my 0.02$

+1
The most beautiful view that you can imagine. We were totally amazed, after the crazy little road that brings you to this lost place, by the paradise we just reached.
The welcoming by the manager was appreciated. The infinite pool with the ocean view gives you the impression to be swimming in the sky.
We had a room with private jacuzzi which was amazing and if you are lucky you watch the sunrise from your jacuzzi and that makes the perfect combo.
The restaurant was also great, good cocktails and good food.
The only bad point is that we only stayed there for one night... we strongly advice to stay longer. There are plenty of activities that you can do from the hotel and that the manager will help you organize.
Mathis hotels in Bali are definitely a sign of quality.

Theres a shuttle bus that leaves every hour from the hotel taking you down to the beach, but its also possible to walk a few kilometers down, and ask for the shuttle to pick you up going back. The hotel staff is really helpful and Will help you sort this out. Have a wonderful stay!
