We stayed here 1 night. Excellent views from our room. The room was small in size but comfortable, clean & quiet with a small TV. Good free Wifi reception & free parking. Continental breakfast was included with cheese, ham, tomatos & fruit. The owner Bernadette made a special trip into town to buy soy milk for me as I am lactose intolerant. However we did experience some disappointment. We arrived at the locked gate around 1.30pm after a long drive from Bendigo. We knew the check in time was 3pm but we thought perhaps we could sit in the lounge until our room was ready. We phoned Bernadette who informed us firmly we wouldn’t be admitted until 3pm. That did not leave us much time to settle in & unpack as we had booked a tour at 4pm to see the Penguin Parade on that afternoon. This was very disappointing as we have travelled extensively & in similar circumstances we have at least been able to sit & wait in the lounge until our room was ready. BTW, this guess house is about half an hour’s drive to CBD & restaurants.

I checked into Swan Lake guest house located right next to Swan Lake and just down from the Phillip Island penguin parade. Bernadette is a lovely host warm on conversation, friendly and with great attention to detail in everything she does. She even ironed my shirt (I didn’t ask really!). Great walk to lake for nature experience (birds, wallabies etc). Comfortable bed and room. Highly recommend!

The location was out of town but worth it being so close to the penguins, the spectaular views and quiet surrounds. The owners went all out to make our stay fantastic. Breakfast was the best continental breakfast ever. Could do with a mini fridge in room but apart from that it was the perfect get away.

Previous two reviews are spot on. We stayed a few months back but both are right. Host, although well meaning is paranoid about where you can go and what you can do in “their house”. No toilet roll holder was weird and the lack of in room amenities such as coffee and tea is not right for a cabin/B&B. Ground are good and location to the penguins is ideal, it’s just a shame about the overbearing host.

JohnDaltonMelb’s April review so aptly summarizes our own experience that no further explanation is required. But below are a few notes of our own.

The rooms are curiously spartan (we had one chair, our friends had no chairs). And no counter space in the bathroom whatsoever.

The screen door was broken and let flies in. Otherwise it was immaculately clean. Ocean views in two directions and nice walking trail nearby.

Definitely not impress. Host was too friendly to a point of overbearing and intrusive. They are very particular about how things should be done. You feel as if you are staying in their private house not as a paying guest (same comment as above).

Room is basic. Amenities less than would be expected from a 3.5 star motel eg. towels not available until we arrive, no shampoos or dryer. No fridge, cutleries or kettle to make a cup of tea. No table or chairs to sit. The room we stayed had single king beds advertised but the beds were of normal singles (not that it bother us that much but regardless misleading).

Cleanliness is pretty average. Toiletry holder in the bathroom is rusty and floor feels dirty. We had to walk inside the room with our shoes on.

I guess there are a few positive aspects. One is the guest house is located in a peaceful location. I can imagine our friendly host would be of great help to those who need advise on local attractions or have time to chat. For us, we just expected more privacy and standard service.

Overall it was an interesting experience but would definitely not come back.

Response from Forstam, Owner at Swan Lake Guest House
Responded 26 Apr 2011
We were fully expecting a review of this nature from these guests. The day before their arrival this couple attempted to pressure us into allowing 2 extra adults in a room that caters for only 2 adults and up to two children. Of course, we could not agree to this degree of overcrowding which would completely destroy the ambience for our other guests (we are not catering for backpackers). On arrival the couple requested a 6am breakfast which we could not agree to as our other guests had requested breakfast starting from 8.30am (not unusual on an Easter Holiday weekend). The review did not even mention these matters. Furthermore, this couple do not appear to know the difference between a single bed and a king sized single bed as well as not understand the difference between a friendly, informative greeting and overbearance. So the rest of their comments should also be construed in this context.

Large residence located in close proximity to the penguin parade but at driving distance from the township and restaurant. Elderly hosts with an hospitable but at times oppressive attitude to guests ("sorry this is private property ... please turn off the lights"). Similar to preceding comments, we were also made to feel more intrusive than welcome. Accommodation was expensive for what was essentially a bedroom with ensuite. Expectations of basic motel amenities was rebuffed (no shampoo, towels or fridge).

This guesthouse is definitely sufficient for a 1 night stay on Phillip Island if you're planning on seeing the penguin parade. It's less than a 1 km walk to the penguins, Nobbys, and nearby Swan Lake is a must see.

My accommodation was in the Lake Room. It was clean with a spa ensuite and balcony. The room itself was nothing like the pictures on their website portrayed it to be. Very small and basic, with a bed and a television and that was it. No refrigerator which I found very inconvenient as I had perishables which needed to be refrigerated. And I had to walk through the property kitchen to get to my room.

The hosts are very friendly but I can see how other reviewers found them overbearing. When I arrived I had been traveling quite a while, I had a very sore back and just wanted to lay down and relax for a bit but I was stuck chatting with the wife for half an hour before she would show me to my room. I actually had to tell her that I wanted a shower and a lie down before the penguin parade to get her to check me in.

Breakfast was continental and lovely.

Response from Forstam, Owner at Swan Lake Guest House
Responded 13 May 2011
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Swan Lake Guest House, Phillip Island. All reviews offered in good faith are considered as valuable input in running the guest house. Regarding your comments in relation to friendliness versus perceived overbearance, we had no idea that you had a sore neck from driving such a long distance. On arrival my wife really enjoyed hearing about your occupation and where you were staying in Mornington the next day. She also enjoyed looking at the brochure you showed her. That you describe this as “stuck chatting with the wife” we regard as somewhat incongruent and insensitive. We became aware of your neck problem the next morning at breakfast (by-the-way thank you for your comment regarding the continental breakfast served at our guest house). You may have forgotten that was when my wife, in her usual caring way, offered help in recommending where you could obtain medical assistance in Cowes. We are happy that you did get help from the pharmacy she recommended. Our aim is to provide, in a friendly and informative manner, information regarding local tourist attractions, restaurants, particularly scenic drives, etc. We provide such information only when it is sought (we do respect our guests’ privacy). Of course it would be foolish to provide this information to guests who know Phillip Island well. Yes, we are the closest accommodation to the Penguin Parade, the Nobbies and of course the beautiful Swan Lake Nature Reserve. We hope you enjoyed the unique experience of your being able to walk that night to the Penguin Parade. However, your review overlooked the beautiful views of Bass Strait, Swan Lake and the opportunity to enjoy wallabies feeding on the grass in front of your private furnished balcony (particularly valued by our overseas guests). The room you stayed in is 5x 3.5 metres in size. This does not include the separate en suite (jacuzzi, shower, basin, and toilet). The furnishings include queen size bed (5 star rated), five drawer tall boy, bedside tables, bed side lamp and TV/DVD player. As mentioned previously the room also has its own private balcony. The rooms all have air conditioning. The photographs on the website show, to the best of our ability, what the rooms look like. Another thing you omitted to mention in your review was the full use you had of our Tchaikovsky Room (12x 12 metres) with tea, coffee and biscuits provided at all times and with magnificent views of Westernport Bay and Bass Strait. It is necessary, at this stage to walk through one door at the far end of our kitchen and then through another to get to this particular room. Currently we do not provide in room refrigerators (clearly indicated in the website before you arrived) but as we explain to our guests on their arrival, they are free to keep drinks and “perishables” in our guests’ refrigerator. We recall that you used this refrigerator to store your cheese. Once again, thank you for your review and we hope you find this response useful. Please accept our apologies if we did not recognize your physical discomfort on arrival.

Best position on the whole island for acomodation, our room at the front of the house looked over the sea one side and the lake the other side, (if you could have seen it), it was just perfect. Stayed 5 nights and spent the first part of the morning reading the papers before making the effort to go and do something. Restaurants were recommended, we went to one that was not on the list and it was not very good, so follow the list.

Great weekend away. We only stayed 1 night but wish we could of stayed longer. Very clean and bed was very comfortable. Close enough to all attractions, but far enough away for peace and quiet. Penquin parade 2 min drive, great walks and nice winery around the corner. Our room had beautiful views and we enjoyed having a bottle of wine on the balcony at sunset. Bernie was very nice and helped us with advice for dinner etc. Breakfast was just enough and hosts made sure there was ample. Would recommend anyone to stay - very enjoyable and would definetly stay here again. Good choice by us!!!
