Apparently the building has a unique 130 years history which I cannot tell on the first glance. The accommodation has 6 rooms, each with a different design. My ensuite king room is contemporary style, and small. One standing cooling Dyson unit and a TV that has 2 active channels. The in-house restaurant however turns out to be wonderful. The chef...

A small group of us (4 people) traveled to Ophir from Alexandra (about 20 minutes drive) for dinner. When ordering the waitress had very limited knowledge of the food, the flavors and effective combinations - something that is not expected at such an upmarket restaurant. When ordering food and delivering drinks the waitresses were dismissive of questions. There was no...

Beautiful old exterior (well restored) with beautifully renovated interior. Small, well curated menu for lunch. One of the few places offering complimentary rolls and butters. We had scallops, special smoked beef filets and crayfish salad. All were excellent and perfectly proportioned for lunch. Never did I expect to find such elegant and tasty food in such a small, but picturesque...

We were delighted by the courtesy vehicle service - a Mercedes van no less! - that Pitches provides - where we were picked up and dropped off again after our meal - we were staying in Omakau, 2.5km away. The lovely driver even kindly drove us over the gorgeous bridge in Ophir. The food exuded imagination (chicken pate in a...

We came here for our wedding anniversary dinner - a real treat. The restaurant has a lovely rustic charm. Very impressed with the food. My husband had the scallops to start which were very tasty and I had the bantam eggs which were beautifully presented in a nest of potato shavings atop a broccoli puree. For main we had the...

This attractive building, in this historic small settlement, is also an amazing restaurant. A warm welcome, good coffee and nice wine, are complimented by some exceptional cooking. The dishes we have sampled on a couple of recent visits have been quite unusual, but beautifully constructed, delicately but well flavoured, and quite delicious. Only a few minutes ride from the Rail...

The Pitches Store was a welcome relief after a 42km ride. Hidden away in Ophir, an historic gold mining township only 1km off the rail trail, this BnB was one of the best I've ever visited. Wonderfully private room with beautiful bedroom and own ensuite, this lovely place was a home away from home. Tastefully refurbished and spacious, this was...

Ophir is one of those gems in the crown that is Central Otago and Pitches makes it even more special. Colleen and Dave Hurd are wonderful hosts. If you get the opportunity to stay at least one night you will wish you had booked a second. The rooms are incredibly comfortable. The shower is fantastic and the setting is stunning....

Wow! What a gem Pitches Store was after a long and tiring day on the Rail Trail. We were warmly greeted by Colleen and her staff before retiring to our beautifully decorated room for a hot shower. The room was charming and everything was clean and lovely. We emerged feeling human again after our first day on the Rail Trail...
