Our recent visit to Mountain Park Hotel stirred up so many emotions for me after not visiting there for about 18 years. Firstly it was beautiful to see how well maintained the hotel is being kept. So clean, and the gardens are immaculate. Then it was great to meet the friendly staff. But I am afraid that was all that...

Okay so unfortunately Bulwer has gone the route of so many of South Africa's once beautiful little towns; badly managed by the local Government (if there is actually any Government management in Bulwer!!). If one can look beyond the sad state Bulwer this very unique hotel comes as quite a surprised tucked away between several large trees it jumps out...

Lovely setting, good value and friendly, helpful management team; although it looks like there are numerous factors conspiring against them lifting Mountain Park above the average. I would have given a Poor rating given some of our experiences, but felt Average was fairer due to the latter point. This might sound a little pernickity but let's get it out of...

View from the bedrooms' windows is spectacular if you love mountains. If you are a fussy eater then book self-catering units.... They got only two so get it booked in advance. A nice place to relax from the hustle and bustle of urban life....

Mountain park offers the classical countryside hospitality, wonderful dining with the new a-la-Carte menu, which provides enough choice to enjoy your meal while relaxing by the fire. The food is freshly prepared and will leave you coming back for more. The rooms are spacious enough to allow you to relax and unwind.

The hotel is very lovely, I enjoyed every minute I spent in the place. The sign on the road needs be be brightened a bit because if we arrived when it was dark, we would have missed the entrance of the place. But all in all everything was perfect.

Old and stately atmosphere of bygone era. Although hotel is old, everything is clean and works. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Room was comfortable and clean. Food excellent. Although quite a drive from Jhb for a short breakaway (approx 5 hrs), the last hour (once off N3) is a breathtaking drive through hills and valleys. Will definitely visit again soon.

Staff and service great, food good, but hotel needs a revamp, beds are old, carpets are old, bathroom is old......etc. It is clean though, can't fault that. Beautiful building, but needs serious love on the interior decorating side.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We would like to invite you to join us on an epic journey as we welcome you to Mountain Park Hotel nestled at the foot of the majestic Amahqwa (Frowning Man) mountain, and transport you to an era gone by. We remain true to timeless standards and no compromise over supreme comfort and guest service set against backdrops of an old Tudor style manor house, with authentic hand carved black wood beams, low ceilings, hand carved blue stone walls and carefully chosen relics such as broadswords and battle-axes from England and Spain. Our guest's accommodation, which excites the sense's, with creaking floors and crooked doors that add a charm of their own. While embracing the familiarity of a 1940's country homestead, mirrored by the beauty of the southern Drakensberg's lush green valleys and rolling hills emotionally attuned service which each and every guest cherishes. Built during the second world war by Italian prisoners of war. The hotel has been a major part of the charming village of Bulwer for many years. Founded in 1885, named after Sir Henry Bulwer, lieutenant Governor of Natal We would like to warmly welcome you to our place of enchantment where our bold vision is to benchmark ourselves as the most admired country Hotel and resort in KwaZulu-Natal.
