My partner and I stayed here for a few nights whilst doing a road trip up the east coast of QLD and I’m so glad we did! The accommodation is beautifully presented in Balinesian style and has breathtaking views over the Daintree rainforest right down to the ocean. We felt really connected to the bird life and wildlife and enjoyed the wonderful sunrises. Carmen, the host, is incredibly kind and attentive and helped us to find local spots to eat and explore, as well as teaching us about the wildlife in the surrounding area and where to find it. We have already booked our return stay as we loved it so much. I would highly recommend this wonderful eco retreat to others.

Cockatoo Hill Retreat is nothing short of magical. Beautifully appointed cabins with a view to take your breath away (the best we have seen in Australia) stunning grounds and a beautiful pool all add to the special natural surroundings. Unwinding with a beer on the spacious balcony and listening to the birds at sunset is one of the many highlights of staying here. Another highlight is the beautiful Carmen, a host who is passionate and knowledgeable about the area - she welcomed us with the warmth of an old friend and made our stay an exceptional experience. The main house with reception and dining has panoramic views across the treetops to the ocean also. The Daintree is a destination unlike any other and we cannot recommend Cockatoo Hill Retreat enough. A must on your travel itinerary!!

We enjoyed two nights here and loved the views, the birdlife and great very comfortable accommodation. Host was so helpful, providing local advice and also knowledge about the wildlife including sharing photos. The pool is gorgeous and so was breakfast. On Carmens advice we did 2 hour Coopers Creek Wilderness Walk which was amazing- highly recommended. Would definitely stay here again.

This place is magical! If I could give Carmen 10 stars I could. The location, the views, the room, the hospitality were amazing. There is not a negative thing I can say. Please do follow Carmen's advice and rent a 4 wheel drive car. The road up to the resort is no joke, but worth every ounce of effort. Also, don't forget your bug spray. Carmen provides netting and lamp coils but the bugs grow big up here in November.

We had been warned about the steep driveway but were impressed by our first sight of the tree top cabins and main house. Carmen was a charming, informative host, sharing books, maps and insider knowledge which helped make our visit memorable. We cruised & snorkelled with Ocean Safari, crocodile and bird cruised with Solar Whisperer, did a night time rainforest walk and covered many trails and tracks on Carmen's recommendations.
The quiet and tree level views from our room were wonderful. The personal touches with floral arrangements and creature comforts were special.
A would highly recommend this retreat to anyone who wishes to fully enjoy their Daintree experiences.

We had a wonderful stay at Cockatoo Hill Retreat. It's a stunning location with views out to the ocean. It's great to hear the sounds of the different birds and the nights were so quiet. Being above the tree line was fantastic as you could feel the breeze and see the the stars at night, which were unbelievable.
Carmen is a delight and so helpful. The rooms are lovely and quite romantic. The pool is fabulous too!
An excellent place to stay!

Four of us stayed for two nights at the start of April. The accommodation is ideally situated overlooking the rain forest canopy and the coral sea beyond. Being surrounded by the forest you feel very close to nature and the sympathetic layout of the buildings and grounds makes this place a cut above the rest. The swimming pool is the nicest pool I have ever been in. The view from the infinity pool is something to behold. Normally I'll only stay in a pool for 20-30 minutes but I stayed in this one for hours. Cockatoo Hill retreat is a quiet and tranquil place and its one of those places that you'll remember forever. Carmen was the perfect hostess. She couldn't do enough for us and made dinner reservations for us in nearby restaurants and called to make sure the Bloomfield track was open before we set off on our journey to Cooktown. Carmen also provided a beautiful fruit platter for breakfast along with croissants, home made preserves, toast, cereal and anything else you wanted. The area is a haven for butterflies and birds. We even saw a Cassowary when we were returning to Cockatoo following dinner. If you want somewhere special to say and to enable you to feel like part of the rainforest, Cockatoo Hill retreat might be the place for you.

Before I begin let me clarify that we did not stay in one of the 4 treehouses on the main property. We did try to book in there but there was no availabilty. Carmen was most helpful in helping us and suggested that we stay in their other property, Riverside Retreat which is on their website and has luxury accomodation at the top of the page. Luxury it was not, we were aware it was a self contained cottage and is does mention that it is on 20 acres. The setting is fantastic but the cottage is very basic, we stayed in one other self contained property on our honeymoon and it was of a far superior standard to Riverside Retreat. The sofa bed was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever sat on so it was not welcoming to sit around in the cottage, the kitchen was very basic and I have lived in better equipped student houses. The bathroom was also not luxurious, we accepted that it was remote and that water pressure etc was expected to be erratic, but there was a washing machine in the bathroom (pracitical but not stylish) and no hairdryer in the property or no toiletries provided. We also felt that the property was not very secure both from humans (although we are reassured by Gilles that there was no problems in the area - but never say never) and also from any wildlife that may be in the area. We both like the outdoors but maybe it was a bridge too far for us to stay so remote and in the rainforest, however we were very conscious of spiders etc getting into the property. Some windows only had louvres, in the bedroom there was half an inch gap under an external door. When we phoned about it we were told to put towels under the door to block the gap. To be fair the following day Carmen and Gillies blocked it up properly. Our final straw was when we returned to the property on the second night after being out and there was a snake on the verandah. We left early the following morning and didn't look back. If you are confident in the Australian rainforest and know your nice snakes and spiders from your nasties and don't mind the rustic look then this place could be for you. The setting is wonderful and it is very peaceful however if you are at all concerned about creepie crawlies then don't stay here as there is no one else about for reassurance. Also if you are looking for a luxury break in the Daintree don't stay here, it is like the whole property is an after thought to Cockatoo Hill Retreat. To give Carmen and Gillies their due, the main property and the treehouses look absolutely wonderful, the setting there is amazing and the pool looks really inviting. It is unfortunate that there was no availability for us there.

We came here to escape the busyness of Port Doulas having made the mistake of booking our stay over school holidays. We spent a lot of time considering options as we wanted a true escape. Cockatoo Hill was a fortunate choice. The location is secluded, peaceful with magnificent views from our ' tree house' across the forest to the coast.

Accomodation: there are only 4 units, well spaced so privacy is maintained, they are set in lovely gardens and face the coast to catch the breezes and views - no need for air-con. Decore is minimalist elegance with open storage to accommodate the tropical climate and clear Balinese influences. We slept with the doors open and spent late afternoons on our verandah, enjoying nature and a glass of wine. Beautiful!

Food and service: breakfast was served from the main lodge and offered a range of fresh fruits, cereals, good coffee. We don't eat hot breakfasts so cannot comment further. Rooms were very clean and we were provided with everything we needed. Very friendly, yet discreet we were provided with great service and assistance

Activities: our host helped us to make the most of our stay with good advice and recommendations on local dinning. We also did a couple of the nature walks which were excellent. The garden is full of butterflies and birds so just sitting and watching is a great pass time. Those who cannot live without teçhnology should beware; no TV and limited phone, Internet connection!

this is a special place that will always be a highlight of our travel experiences. We have stayed at some of the most beautiful places in the world but the elegance and simplicity of Cockatoo Hill makes it a standout. Will definitely go back next time we head up to far North Queensland.
