The Mauna Kea is a gracious, beachy, warm and fun hotel. From the welcome arrival to the always sad departure this is my favorite place with my favorite people. Thank you for so many smiles, delicious meals, best beach and hotel family ever. Can't wait to get back!!

I was able to convince my boyfriend to take photos because together we have so many children and never capture pics of just "us". We were very please and now looking back at the pics we are so happy to have captured these memories which we will cherish forever. Cynthia is very talented and we are lucky to have had such a professional!

We went to the public beach only (privately maintained by hotel but open to public with limited parking access) and it was a very lovely beach. I’ve read it’s hard to get a parking pass … but we were able to go two days in a row with no issue. One day around 2pm and another around 11am. I recommend finding a spot under some trees for shade. Also, one day the water was like glass and the next the waves were over my head. A great time for the whole family. And clean restrooms!

We stayed for one week in September and the service from the front desk and housekeeping were excellent. Enjoyed nice touches in the room like tea pot, robes and slippers. Also love the fact that the lanai furniture have towel covers for comfort and hygiene. The L’Occitane shampoo and conditioner were a bit drying (Verbena) so if you have dry hair I suggest you bring your own. Due to the terraced nature of the lanais (lower floor lanais are larger than upper floors) we did unfortunately have an incident of the upstairs neighbor emptying sand out of his shoes over his railing onto our lanai right on top of our heads and into our breakfast which was a rude surprise. He did apologize but the breakfast was not replaced :( Also we are not sure if this is a no smoking hotel as we could smell cigarette smoke from our lanai that seemed to come from other guest rooms throughout the week. We also did see people smoking next to the Hau Tree restaurant and there are no none smoking signs posted in the rooms or elsewhere on property. The smoking was slightly annoying but thanks to the airy feel of the hotel it was less of a nuisance than would have been at a more enclosed hotel. Noise wise we did hear door slamming and furniture dragging from guests in adjacent rooms. So if you stay here please help by guiding the doors shut and lifting the furniture when you need to move it. And of course be mindful of guests underneath you…

Mauna Kea is a wonderful resort. We wanted a place with delicious food and a great beach, and this resort delivered. The beach is unbeatable with a sandy shore, adjacent coral reef for snorkeling, and soft waves that won’t intimidate lap swimmers or young swimmers. There are plenty of lounge chairs and ample towels available. The beach has a bar-resto if you want to take a break. During our stay we opted for the inclusive breakfast and the buffet assortment was plentiful and delicious. (Try the salmon & ask for an omelette!). The Manta also served delicious 5-star meals and the Copper Bar has delectable Ahi & burgers. Just be prepared to pay high prices for your meals here. I knocked off one star because the level of service was a bit uneven, from the wait staff to concierge desks. Also during our stay, the hotel underwent the replacement of floor tiles in a number of rooms over a couple days, and the noise was inescapable. I chalk up both to the pandemic, as I understand that the hotel saw a surge in guests and was 90% booked for the past 9 months or so.
