At The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort, guests have called out the enchanting evening atmosphere, enhanced by live music, though some wish the entertainment lasted longer. The resort's cleanliness and maintenance receive high marks, yet consistent towel availability remains an area for improvement. While the stunning beach and pool areas earn rave reviews, the value proposition is questioned, with many travelers pointing out the high costs for amenities, dining, and parking that don't always align with quality.
Room experiences vary, with some offering comfort and views and others in need of updates. Service quality also ranges widely, from commendable to needing better coordination.

We have stayed at the Hapuna Beach Hotel and the Mauna Kea hotel about 16 times in the past 20 years. We stayed at the Hapuna this year because the Mana Kea was under renovation. The beach, grounds and pools are beautiful. The rooms need major sprucing up. The blanket with pilling and the outdoor cushioned chair was stained and torn.. Gone are the amenities of yesteryear. No emery beards, cotton balls, and makeup remover. There were 3 bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash bolted to the wall. There were no china cups in the room, we had to ask for them. Everything was disposable plastic, not very eco. There was only one nightstand lamp for reading in the room. We had to ask for another one to be delivered. The maid said that the hotel had replaced the nightstand table lamp with a standing light. I pointed out that this was inadequate for reading. Not would I expected for the oceanfront room and the price. It felt like the management were letting things going in the rooms awaiting a new buyer or developer.

We have been to the Hapuna Beach Resort many times - beginning when it was the Hapuna Prince Hotel (so before it was a Westin). The last time before this visit was during Covid so we gave it some slack in our expectations. It may very well be the best beach on all the Hawaiian Islands. The staff is friendly and solicitous so I would say the service is very good.
But the resort itself is due to up it's game if it wants to compete with the other Luxury properties nearby. The "bones" of the building are good. High ceilings, broad staircases, sweeping ocean views, decent sized guestrooms and everything is clean. But the common areas are sparsely decorated with tired decor. The landscaping is well maintained but not lush. More pots an planting would do a lot to give you the feeling you are in the paradise that you are.
Unfortunately, the rooms are in need of more than a simple cosmetic update (I think the carpet is the only thing that has changed in the most recent times we've been there). Furniture is worn. Threadbare sheets and the blankets were worn and PILLING!!!! The bathroom needs a major overhaul, not just updating the vanity.
A few years ago, they built a set of privately owned condos in front of the main building. This pretty much wiped out most of their rooms in the Ocean View Category. The only way to truly see the sunset from your Lanai is to be on the top 2 floors. Otherwise, to see the ocean from most of the OV rooms you have to look over the roof of the condo complex or over some large trees that block the view on the other wing of the property.
The dining options are the weakest of all the amenities. Except for the continental breakfast, we chose not to eat on property even once on this trip. The breakfast buffet looked plentiful but was lacking imagination and for $50/person, it should be matching in caliber. I will point out that the staff was excellent. It's a shame because a good Fine Dining and casual daytime restaurants could be a draw to guests of other hotels and condos. Especially since we found out that they sell "day passes" for use of the hotel pool, gym and amenities to locals and people staying elsewhere.I can't imaging the current offerings are attracting anyone but Westin guests who don't want to leave the property.
Lastly, if they are going to charge a resort fee, I resent that self parking is not included. Especially since #1 the hotels in this area are remote and you must have a car and #2 This is not a city hotel and Parking lot land is plentiful. Understand that they would charge for valet but it's odd that they boast that fees for both Valet and the self parking are the same $35/day.
The is not a bad hotel just not the Luxury it was or could be. The beach is stellar and the building has such potential to be a WOW. We even speculated that they are possibly waiting for the overhaul of the Mauna Kea property to be completed before removing any of the room inventory for construction or investing in a sorely needed update to the Haupuna as a whole? This theory , I will add, is purely conjecture on my part and is not backed up with any real facts.

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is such a beautiful resort! Hands down one of the best resorts we have stayed at. Upon check in we were greeted by friendly staff, given a beautiful fresh flower lei and delicious juice and a hand towel. The room we were assigned was absolutely gorgeous! Our room had a king size bed, a sofa, small table perfect for snacks, a coffee bar area with a really cool mood light along with a dresser with a lot of storage, tv and safe. The mini fridge was perfect for our beverages and food. The coffee maker was great too! The balcony was amazing. There was a tall table with two chairs and a sofa. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner on the balcony a few times. We had a gorgeous ocean view. The room also came with reusable water bottles and the resort has many refillable water stations throughout the property. These bottles kept our water cold for the entire day!
The only thing bad I can even think of would be that the wi-fi in our room was not a good signal because we were at the very far end of the hallway very far from the lobby. We just took our laptops to the main lobby and purchased coffee from the Piko Coffee Bar in the mornings. We did some work in the lobby (plenty of nice chairs/sofa's) The lobby had an amazing view so we actually enjoyed working here. The bathroom in our room was really nice. House keeping were so friendly and refilled our coffee and toiletries.
The pools are great! We loved the adult pool with the infinity edge. The koi pond is really nice. We did enjoy the beach however it was very windy the first two days that we were here so we spent more time at the pool. Tuesday and Wednesday nights were pizza night at the Piko Bar. $22 for a flatbread pizza in Hawaii is a great deal and we thought the pizza's were delicious!! The staff were so nice at the vallet parking area and offered to take us in the golf cart to pick up our rental car at the sister property, Mauna Kea Resort.
We hope to return to the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort again soon!

We stayed here 5 nights and were very impressed. The rooms are modern and well furnished as was our porch which had a very good view of ocean and beach given that it was a “partial view”. The staff is very friendly. Grounds are beautiful. Breakfast buffet was included in our room rate and was a joy to sample every morning.
Every evening they had live entertainment in the outdoor covered lobby bar which added a great mellow vibe.
We had a couple meals at the outdoor pool bar/restaurant by the ocean which was very nice. We didn’t eat at the signature restaurant at dinner as it seemed a bit high end and gourmet to us. There are many great and less expensive places to eat and drink within 10 to 30 minute drive. North, or to Waimea, or back south. Roads have little traffic and easy to drive.
One improvement could be to add more umbrellas at adult pool and to heat it slightly, as it was on the cold side.
We definitely highly recommend.

My family and I spent a week at the Westin Hapuna and had an excellent experience. The hotel and our rooms were clean and well designed, the entire staff that we dealt with was friendly and helpful, and the beach was beautiful though the water was rough at times. We also liked the drinking water stations throughout the hotel and the stainless water bottles provided for free. We had only two complaints. First, they are redoing the lower pool deck, and the jackhammering was loud and unpleasant. However, when we discussed this with hotel management, they compensated us by removing the resort charge, which we appreciated. Second, the onsite restaurant Meridia served food that was not good. Though we enjoyed the food at the poolside and breakfast restaurants, of the six of us, only one person enjoyed her entree at Meridia. My paella was way over-spiced (flavor, not heat); I could eat barely half of it. My father's short ribs were "dry and inedible." For the prices charged, this was unacceptable. We ate at a high-end restaurant elsewhere most nights of the week, and Meridia, without question, was the worst of them. Other than these issues, we really did enjoy our week at the resort, and all of us would return without question.

I am a lifetime Marriott Platinum Elite member, and I have spend thousands of nights at Marriott Bonvoy properties over the years. My recent experience at this Westin hotel was amongst the worst I have had. We had a reservation for 8 nights, and we actually left the hotel after 3 nights because we were so incredibly frustrated. The facility is in a beautiful location, yet the property is old and not well maintained. The toilet in our room was in disrepair and was not resolved despite our reporting it. The staff in the breakfast restaurant was actually rude. The host (Mark) was particularly unpleasant. Instead of greeting us in the morning, he complained about his job and said that he really didn't want to be there. The complimentary breakfast food for Elite members was pre-packed and not at all appetizing - even the fruit was not fresh and inconsistent, which is very surprising for Hawaii. Overall the service in the hotel restaurant was slow and inconsistent. The property pool deck was being replaced, so there was loud noise of jackhammers throughout our stay. There were no towels available at the beach, and the beach furniture was old and dirty. We were told to go to the pool if we wanted towels, and the beach staff was rude. There were two solid days of fire alarm testing (Jan 30 and 31) which took several hours each day. The gym on the property was not clean, and I reported this to the attendant on duty but nothing was done after 3 days. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel and I intend to notify Marriott management about our extremely disappointing service. The Front Desk manager did remove the resort charges and parking charges as an accommodation, but the was not at all sufficient to offset the highly disappointing experience during our stay.

We had a choice between the Westin and the Mauna Kea and I am so glad we picked the Westin. The Mauna Kea is a much more dated property and had a very small beach. Please keep that in mind before picking between the two.
Hotel Age: Newly Renovated and all common areas and rooms are updated and clean. Did not have to think even once about the cleanliness during the precarious times we live in and to me that is a good thing Hotel Location: Brilliant location on what I consider the most idyllic beach in all of Big Island. The beach is not very long but the sand and water are both so clean and pretty Pools: I like that the adult pool is separate from the kids pool. The kid pool can get overrun and super busy and the adult pool was more tranquil and felt a whole lot cleaner and safer to use Room: My husband is a Lifetime Titanium and we had to change from two regular rooms before we were able to use our suite night upgrades. We were in room 631 and it was absolutely beautiful and perfect for our family of 4. Two rooms, microwave, refrigerator, one large lanai and one large balcony and beautiful views over the ocean and sounds of the waves. Bathrooms in all rooms updated with toto toilets Staff: I found everyone friendly and nice. We used the valet exclusively and were very pleased with the prompt pulling of our car Breakfast and Food: This is the only thing the hotel can improve. The location is a bit far away from any commercial establishments (15 minute drive) and the food at the property left a lot to be desired. Prices were crazy high and the food quality did not match the price
Mahalo to the Westin Staff and Management for amazing 10 days in a picture perfect location.

Disappointed in this hotel and shocked at many of the reviews. Rooms are old and dated. We had ants in our room and bathroom. When we called the front desk it seemed like this was fairly common. Went to Meridia for dinner on our first night and it took 2 hours for our food to come. We enjoyed the beach and pool but got some below average service and severely undercooked kids burgers at the pool restaurant. One night we noticed water leaking from our ceiling and had to deal with this while our kids were sleeping. Found out it was the AC dripping/overflowing. When we brought up issues, someone would come to fix things (spray the ants, vacuum the water from AC). Couldn’t move rooms as the hotel was sold out. It was terrible to feel trapped in this nightmare of a room. Thought about moving hotels but after paying almost $1k a night for this room we couldn’t do it. Later I read reviews about roaches in the rooms, and was so glad we didn’t run into that.
Bottom line - if you’re thinking of booking here - just don’t do it!!!

Nestled gracefully on the enchanting Kona coast, the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is nothing short of paradise. From the moment you step in, you're welcomed with warm aloha spirit, seamlessly merging luxury with the essence of Hawaii.
The rooms are a haven of comfort, designed meticulously with a touch of sophistication while embracing the natural surroundings. Picture windows offer generous glimpses of the azure Pacific, ensuring every morning begins with breathtaking views.
But it's more than just the aesthetics; it’s the people who make Westin Hapuna truly stand out. A heartfelt shout out to our remarkable concierge, Amy. Her dedication, insights, and unwavering enthusiasm ensured every plan was executed to perfection.
The beach attendants, Maka, Pono, Taylor, and Tyler, deserve a special mention. Their attentiveness and genuine love for sharing the island's magic amplified our beach days. Whether it was setting up a shaded spot or sharing stories of the island's heritage, their warmth shone through.
In a world filled with holiday destinations, Westin Hapuna Beach Resort stands tall, embodying not just the beauty of its location, but also the heart and soul of the people who make it the remarkable haven it is. Highly recommended for those seeking an authentic, luxurious Hawaiian experience. 🌺🌊🤙🏼

This was my favorite Westin resort. While a bit remote from Kona, that is not necessarily a bad thing though I do recommend renting a car. The resort is situated on Hapuna beach, which is reputed to be one of the nicest in the country. I wouldn't dispute that. You can snorkel from the beach itself, though there is not as much to see as in some other locations. The water in the AM was very calm, but towards the afternoon, you start to see some waves...not surfing waves, but gentle waves. Service at the resort was on the whole quite friendly and accommodating. Other than a couple of misses by housekeeping, which were quickly corrected (missed our room one day so they cleaned it at 5, had to request that they refill the bath supplies on two occasions which they did) most of the service was great and friendly. The room itself was sizeable. To save money (points, really), we stayed in a 2 queen bedded room, with my wife and two barely adult daughters. We didn't really feel cramped, and compared to a lot of 2 queen bedded rooms, this one had room to set up luggage racks. The lighting could have been a little better in some areas of the room, but that is nit picking. Our bathroom (I don't know if this is true throughout the resort, though it may be) had an electric bidet toilet, a luxury that I have rarely seen in the US. Food was generally pretty good, though expensive, but that is the case everywhere on the Big Island. We are Platinum Bonvoy members and elected breakfast instead of the points as a gift. They offer a "Platinum Continental Breakfast Buffet" for two guests, which I saw another reviewer complain about. I thought that it was great. It not only contained typical continental offerings, but also offered bagels and smoked salmon, hard boiled eggs, plus hot oatmeal, cereals, juice, and coffee. If that wasn't enough, you could opt to upgrade to their $50 full buffet, for an additional $25 but we really only did that once, and in general never felt that we were missing out. We found the resort to be attractive overall, and the two pools to be really nice. We never had trouble getting seating at the pools, and it seemed that beach chairs were also never full. The beach activity area was great, and they offer snorkel loan for 2 hours per day per guest, canoe rides, kayaking, and paddleboarding. I know that the snorkel was complimentary but I don't recall about the rest of the equipment. The sister hotel, the Mauna Kea resort is accessible with a shuttle that goes back and forth in the evening, and they have a terrific restaurant called Manta that is near a small overlook where you can go at night and watch manta ray(s) swim about. They light under the water which attracts plankton and that attracts the mantas to feast upon. Both resorts offer beautiful sunset views from the restaurants or the beach and these could be spectacular. Suffice it to say, that we loved our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to come back.
