Nestled along the dramatic Kohala Coast and in the piko, or center, of five great mountains, Mauna Lani is a sacred oasis where generations of families and friends have made memories together on soulful lands once cherished by the greatest of Hawaiian royalty. Greet the morning sun as it rises above the mountains' peaks from the seat of an outrigger canoe. Talk story with friends old and new at the Great Lawn as the sounds of ocean waves and laughter mingle. Dine amongst the company of loved ones at CanoeHouse, where locals have savored the island's bounty for decades. As you walk this storied coastline, breathe the rejuvenating salt air and swim in the crystalline waters, you feel the same mana, or spiritual energy, that first captivated legends like King Kamehameha I and Francis H. I'i Brown.

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection, earns rave reviews for its extensive amenities, with guests particularly enjoying the stunning pools, snorkeling, and diverse dining options. The resort's location is a consistent hit among travelers, who appreciate its beachfront setting and cultural atmosphere. While the service and room cleanliness receive mixed feedback, with some reports of unresponsiveness and cleanliness issues, the serene ambiance and tasteful decor often leave a lasting impression. However, guests have called out the resort for its high costs and additional fees.

Our first visit to the Big Island and to the Mauna Lani Resort. First off, it’s an easy and short ride from KOA Airport. The scenery on the drive is a bit of an eye opener with all the lava rock landscape, but once on site everything is lush and tropical. First impressions were the valets and reception were friendly and welcoming and the lobby and common areas very classy and warm. We were fortunate enough to have an ocean front room on the 6th floor… perfect for sea breezes, the sound of the waves and stunning sunsets. Room décor was clean and fresh, if not lacking a few amenities. Some utensils and plates would have been useful, but I guess you could ask for them if you really needed them. Room was very quiet despite having neighbors on both sides most night. Not sure if that is down to the people or insulation in the walls!

Beach was fairly quiet. We never had an issue getting a lounger with an umbrella at the water’s edge any days. A lot of rocks in the waters, and only really one small area for a comfortable entry into the water. Tides made quite a difference to the accessible water… At high tide the water is pretty “choppy”, but at low tide it is like a milk pond. Water temperature was fine, unlike the two pools which seemed to be a little too warm for our liking, but we never really used them other then to try them out.

Every employee we had interaction with were wonderful, friendly and courteous. A credit to the hotel, and in many cases to the people of Hawaii. It was good to hear so many say they were born on the Big island.

We didn’t talk to too many other guest, but it was interesting to hear those that we did talk to tell us they were repeat guests, a couple many times over. I like to think that we will too get to return one day. It took me a few days to “get it” but by weeks end I was sold!

I would be remiss if I didn’t add that like all resort hotels these days, the rate you pay for your room can be inflated by all sorts of fees, taxes and add-ons, I’m guessing in the region of 25-30% over the room rate. Something to bear in mind. $50 a night Resort Fee and $40 Valet Parking for example… and we knew this going in, but it’s still a bit galling when you see it on the final folio. Generally speaking everything in Hawaii is expensive, so go in with both eyes open.

Finally, while we were there occupancy was pretty low I believe… I suspect in the height of summer when school is out it could be a mad house, and hard to find space and some tranquility. As an older retired couple September was a perfect time for us and many like-minded people.

Aloha and Mahalo.

This is my second solo trip to Mauna Lani and I absolutely LOVE everything about this property! I booked through AMEX, and they are always gracious with honoring the perks. The rooms are good size and quiet, the bed is so comfortable and housekeeping never missed a detail. My first trip, I did the snorkeling excursion with Keanu and was lucky enough to have a solo excursion! He was so kind, and he is incredibly knowledgable - we got to see everything: turtles, beautiful fish, and he will dive down to show you urchins etc. This trip I was less adventurous and laid by the beach and pool. My only complaint about the beach is that the water can be murky due to the wind, so visibility is not great (at all.) I should have booked another snorkeling expedition to be able to see great fish again. The beach and pool attendants always made sure I was comfortable and hydrated. One day it was too windy for the beach umbrellas, which was annoying but I laid out by the adult pool and it ended up being super relaxing and perfect. The waiters at breakfast were so nice, and the service was quick. I have stayed at the Mauna Kea, and prefer the Mauna Lani due to the adult pool and it being less of a "scene" - especially traveling alone. I am already planning my trip back next year! 11/10! Mahalo!

Everything about Mauna Lani was exceptional. The King size ocean view room was decorated beautifully, dual sinks in the bathroom was a plus. The bed was comfortable and the linens were of high quality. There is a small refrigerator that is stocked daily with water and can accommodate other items you might get. The bath/lotion products are of high quality and good scent. Overall the decor of the property is aesthetically pleasing, the pools and grounds are calming. The beach cabana day beds are relaxing and come with more benefits than most cabana rentals we have experienced on the mainland at other hotels. Food was always amazing. This is not a budget resort so be prepared for things to be a little expensive but well worth it. The market has fair priced items though. Would definitely stay here again.

I used to come here before the 200 million renovation.
I have to say that I was pretty underwhelmed by what they did. The room hallways were not renovated and the room reno? if there was was not an improvement. They got rid of the bathtub so I was not able to take a bath.

Whoever checked us in, by the name of Zel or Mel was not great. We were celebrating our Anniversary and the hotel was at a low capacity at the time. We would have appreciated a small gesture like a bottle of champagne in the room. Her mannerism in general was what put me off - she seemed kind of unprofessional.

They got rid of the nice fish that were in the ponds that used to be there pre-reno. The hotel is now more expensive but they cheap out on giving you low water pressure in faucets, toilet, and the shower. They give you the cheapest and thinnest toilet paper used in gas stations.

I was not impressed by housekeeping. Just like their neighbor Fairmont, housekeeping is slacking. Our rooms were not cleaned until about 3pm in the afternoon. It looked like there was only 1 cleaning person on the floor lol. They are not "tidy."
A big problem for me was that the sheets are warm. I slept warm my whole stay. I never had that experience at any hotel.

The cabana food service was good and the Halani restaurant food was great. The buffet is a whopping $50/person but not worth the cost. It made me miss the old Mauna Lani's epic buffet spread. By the way, the old Mauna Lani used to let us use those cabanas for free. Those are now $100/day but you do get $50 food and beverage credit.

All in all, the whole time it made us wonder where the 200mil went lol

A beautiful hotel on a stunning landscape. Rooms are spacious and modern with nice lighting, comfortable beds and beautiful views. But the service is surprisingly cold and impersonal. After staying at another resort in the same premium luxury tier and feeling overwhelmed with Hawaiian hospitality, we were left consistently disappointed with the frequently unpleasant restaurant, concierge and desk staff. Of course this doesn’t apply to everyone—about a quarter of the staff members are perfectly friendly. But the sizable remainder left my wife and I feeling more like annoyances than guests. Some specific examples: 1. room not ready at check-in despite being past the 3PM time 2. needing to get our room re-cleaned after the bed wasn’t fully made and balcony wasn’t cleaned when we returned to our rooms in the evening 3. having to wait 35 minutes for a breakfast table before our flight home and being told we could not take buffet food to go…

If you value service above all else, I’d suggest paying a small premium to stay at certain other resorts on the island (you know the ones). Auberge is a reasonable alternative to the (very) small handful of pricier Big Island options, but overall the pricing and branding is that of a five-star ultra-luxury resort and we don’t believe they meet this threshold.

Disappointed
We have explored various destinations around the world, and when we do get the chance to spend time as a family, we prefer to indulge in luxury accommodations. Our recent stay at Mauna Lani from December 18th to 23rd left us feeling somewhat let down.

Fifteen years ago, we visited Mauna Lani before it became part of the Auberge collection. We cherished our previous experience and the exceptional service we received, so we were eager to return. While the hotel's grounds are undoubtedly stunning, the overall luxury and personalized service we remembered were noticeably missing.

Pros:
- Gorgeous property
- Exceptional beach staff, with special thanks to Paola and Precious
- Friendly and cheerful breakfast servers

Cons:
- No beach bags provided for guests
- Absence of shower caps in the bathrooms
- Insufficient toiletries in the rooms
- Mold and stains found in the showers
- Lack of toilet seat covers in public restrooms
- Disrespectful and condescending attitude from a concierge staff member
- Spa prices are exorbitant, even by Four Seasons standards, and the experience falls short
- Breakfast buffet is pricey with a limited selection
- Bar closes at 10:00 PM, and the hotel offers no nightlife options
-activities not advertised very well

Overall, while the location has its charm, we were disappointed by the lack of attention to detail and the level of service we had anticipated.

We arrived on Thursday with huge expectations. This hotel has a large price tag with great ratings so we assumed we would be very satisfied. Check in went well so we were off to a great start. Unfortunately, celebrating our 50th anniversary here should be a treat but it’s not. Waiting in a huge line for breakfast today is not our idea of luxury. The omelet chef told told me he had to go to the kitchen to get and chop more spinach ( bowl was empty) so I chose other items. The omelet I was handed was not the one I had ordered so unfortunately I gave up and took scrambled eggs from the buffet. Obviously these things should not cause upset but Mauna Lani prides itself on its amazing rating and we are not seeing that at all. The other issue is the amount of corporate groups. By lunchtime, those on expense account are hitting the booze and the volume and calm nature of the adult pool changes dramatically to the point that the kids pool is preferable. The staff is disengaged from the guests with few exceptions. We love Hawaii and the Big Island in particular. Our prior visits have all been at a lovely resort nearby that also hosts conference groups. We regret this decision to change hotels and wish we were back at the other property. Sadly ( and I did look) there is no option to change now. We’ve learned and would not recommend this hotel. Beware the price tag despite a lot of glowing reviews.

The entire experience was a high-quality during the stay we were recognized by name. While awaiting our room, refreshments, lunch, clean restrooms, and changing rooms were available so that we could take full advantage of the pool until our rooms were prepared. The property and the staff provided the most tranquil, beautiful and service oriented experience that was over the top with extraordinary care and kindness.

Beautiful resort, rooms and helpful staff! Our room AC needed to be adjusted when we arrived, our mini fridge had to be changed out also. Hotel staff was quick to resolve these two issues. On-site complementary laundry machines allowed us to wash all of our cloths prior to departure. Canoe House restaurant had a nice seating, although with a 7:30pm reservation, we were told couple of items were out of stock, I ordered one of the items suggested, only to be told they ran out of that items too. Disappointed by this, drinks from the bar were excellent! Adult pool was nice, and hotel does not charge a resort fee, they did provide snorkel equipment and paddle boards to use. We were Welcome by front desk person, Edwin, very welcoming and provided us with an overview of the resort. Enjoyed our visit

Great venue, great staff but drinks and food is hella expensive.
Unless I won the lottery or someone rich paid for my trip, I would not come back. I loved the hotel, the staff and the location. Really hard to fault any of those - attention to detail was great too but the biggest issue I had was the expensive of everything. The $50 per day "Resort Fee" just stuff we could do like use the bikes or I guess the built in valet, should all be part of the room cost IMO, especially if there is no choice in this charge. It's not a huge cost but it adds a sour taste when you're checking out.
The $50 per person for a buffet breakfast is also a little extreme. It was nice food but it's a buffet!
$90 for a shot of (admittedly good) whiskey is high enough for a third of a bottle... I get it, restaurants always mark up and yes this is Hawaii so all prices are little higher that the mainland but still - almost all prices were like this.
Perhaps I need to earn more money and stop whining about it...

We had the concierge pick us up from the airport with a luxury SUV. Each way was $250. In the resort, there is a complimentary ride around the area which can bring you to nearby hotels. However, most people who want to drive around the island take a rental car as uber is quite expensive and most travel times are around 30-40 minutes at least to get to other destinations.
