First post-pandemic stay here, and it's even better than it was before. Perfect for our Indonesian/Australian family group of 9, but would also be my first choice for a solo writing retreat. Achieves the effect and experience that a hundred places in Bali strive for, but don't quite manage. Authentically local; but catering seamlessly to international visitors. Best towels ever; wi-fi you can count on; superb food and drink, with a lot of produce grown on the premises, or very close by. The eco-friendly features add to comfort - they're not a trade-off against it. Service is friendly and efficient, never slick or plastic.

We sincerely recommend this beautiful place to anyone who is looking for an authentic, quiet stay close to Jodjakarta in beautiful bungalows made of recycled wood in a fantastic (organic) garden. The owners and the staff are not only lovely people but also shared very interesting discussions with us. Thanks a lot!

Lovely, rustic, comfortable little eco-resort among the rice paddies of quiet Tembi village. A haven from the chaos and frenzy of other areas of Yogya, yet only a short Grab ride away from all the action and historical attractions. Exceptional organic food and pleasant company, with relaxed and happy staff due to the resort’s mission to provide a fair and fun workplace. Rarely do you find an organization where the vision and reality match up, but these converge at Yabbiekayu. An admirable venture and wonderful place to rest and enjoy the lush surroundings, mixed flower, herb, and vegetable gardens, lots of fresh gourmet food, and caring staff.

Beautiful bungalows set amongst vegetable gardens and surrounded by rice paddies. Genuine, warm staff, wholesome food and catered really well for vegan and vegetarian needs. So much to do in the local area as well as surrounding area. We stayed 5 nights and could have stayed longer.

Such a pleasure to have hosted you Helen. We have been loving the new national market that Covid has brought us with amazing, interesting Indonesian guests, but it is also such a pleasure now to be fully back up and running and welcoming back our overseas guests. There have been so many guests from overseas, in the past came for 3 days to see the temples and palace, then stayed for 5 or 6 and never even left Yabbiekayu haha, ! Its a pleasure to be able to help people feel at home and rested. Thanks again for the wonderful review, and we hope to see you again soon!

Disclaimer: I used to go to university in Jogja, so my love for it has deep roots. But returning as a working adult after not having scratched the travel itch for a good while, Yabbiekayu had me falling in love with Jogja all over again. It's not just their welcoming staff, or expansive views of Kasongan village surrounding the periphery, it's how everything has a story to be told about. The five Bungalows are experiments on sustainable living, evolving from one to the next. Mine was the first to be built, and entering it, I was swept away by the smell of aged timber, and tickled by the creativity in every bit of furniture. The outdoor bathroom got me feeling like a Javanese princess, and the well-stocked minibar plus private back garden views of the moonlight bouncing against the reflection of the rice paddies created nights I will soon never forget. I also ate pretty much all my meals during my stay at their organic restaurant because it is THAT good. I didn't try out any of their activities (I did still forage the pink water guavas to and from my bungalow), but I can imagine what they have to offer will astound nonetheless. If you, like me, want to support a business that supports itself from not only taking from nature, but teaching us to respect and work with it, that respects the culture of the people from whom it is created, with a dash of luxury and delectable dietary offerings, then Yabbiekayu is definitely the place for you.

Wow Seetha, what a stunning review! We really appreciate it, and welcome back to Yogya. It was a complete pleasure to meet you on this trip, and we do hope to seeing you again soon. The team and I are so glad to hear that you liked the food while here. Its something we really do try to do well. Our organic edible landscaped gardens contribute as much as possible to our menu, with much of the rest of our produce being bought from sustainable local suppliers. Our fulltime head chef Yudha joined us out of a desire to design and create healthy tasty food. Yodha then works closely with Adji our head gardener who is trained in permaculture and organic farming, as well as with Steffi our fulltime food scientist to really try and ensure our menu is both different, interesting, sustainable, beautiful and most importantly healthy and tasty. So its always lovely to hear that people are appreciating the effort we are going to! Thanks again for the wonderful review, hope to see you again soon!

First I booked directly and ended up paying way more a night then when booking through the internet. Upon check-in the whole place feels neglected. To entrance door to the bungalow is very low so you need to stoop every time you walk through it. Bumped my head more then once. The staff did not show us around the room nor explained any of the amenities available. There is no AC. The ricefield view is spoiled by the motorcycles of the farmers parking right in front of the back terrace. The electric outlets are hard to reach (ceiling hight or floor hight) but they give you a cheap extension to plug in your electric devices {cfr picture). The stairs to go down the bungalow or down to the bathroom are precarious. The call for prayer could be next to your bed for all you know (not the fault of yabbiekayu). Catering is expensive. For 890.000 rupiah a night (covid time) I will not be coming back here.

Response from Bakti Widiarti, General Manager at Yabbiekayu Eco-Bungalows
Responded 28 Jan 2021
Hi Michael, Thanks for your honest and frank review, it really is appreciated though of course like any business owner we would have appreciated the direct feedback at the time so that we could have had the opportunity to respond personally immediately and addressed any concerns Firstly let me start by apologising that our standards had slipped at the time of your visit. As I am sure you can see by the long list of unsolicited positive reviews about Yabbiekayu across the internet, your experience was an aberration rather than the norm. Frustratingly my partner and I were trapped far from the business for a prolonged period due to Covid, and although our staff have done an amazing job without us there and with most staff only working part-time due to reduced tourism, some standards definitely had slipped. Let me assure you that we are now back in control and working rapidly to get things back up to our usual standard, which will address many of your concerns. I have asked the staff to go back through our guest register to try and contact you to discuss how we can compensate you for your less than perfect experience. If you don't hear from us directly then please do reach out as we really do wish to address your concerns directly. I would like to comment though on a few things you mentioned. Yes it's true that for environmental reasons we chose to build Yabbiekayu without using AC. Instead all of our bungalows have been designed from the ground up to be eco-friendly, using natural building techniques to ensure thermal comfort, through correct orientation, radiant insulation, radiant and evaporative cooling, ventilation and air movement. It is frustrating that this was not explained to you by the staff as this would have greatly improved your comfort. Yes it is also true that we are located in a small mainly muslim village, as per the majority of villages in Java. The call to prayer is a part of the ambience of these villages, as it is with any other muslim community, and you're right, it is not something we could or would want to control. We do however import, and provide for free, the highest quality, and most comfortable earplugs available for those who wish to sleep in. Otherwise we encourage you to hop up and enjoy the sunrise and the mist rising off the rice fields and see the awakening of a very normal village. Regarding power points, we have them located conveniently throughout the bungalows, my apologies if the staff did not clarify the locations, we will re-enforce the need for this when welcoming future guests. I am sure this emerged as a side effect of our increased privacy guidelines due to Covid. Finally, regarding the price, Yabbiekayu was setup from day one as an eco-friendly social enterprise. We grow as much of our own produce as we can, train and employ local staff. We believe in and practice every aspect of sustainable, culturally sensitive, social responsible tourism that we can. Covid has placed us and many other social enterprises in a very difficult situation. The total devastation of the international tourism industry, has radically reduced our income while increasing cost of living. Unlike in many other wealthier countries, there is very little social welfare for us or our staff to fall back on. It has been challenging, but Yabbiekayu has chosen to keep all of staff at least part-time employed throughout the Pandemic, with the owners wearing any losses. This does make it challenging to lower prices, especially given the vast majority of our profits have always been turned to social outcomes anyway. I do hope that you will reconsider returning to Yabbiekayu, and give us the opportunity to provide you with the high standard of food and service that we are famous for . Again thank you for your feedback and we wish you all the best on your onwards travels.

Upon check-in the place seemed ill maintained meaning the ‘garden’ feels neglected. The ‘villa’ is better described as a bungalow as it has a bedroom with terrace front and back and a bathroom. The door is built for midgets, there is no AC, lightening is average. The staff does not explain how everything works so you need to find out for yourself. The stairs to come in or go to the bathroom are precarious and electrical outlets are hard to find/reach. Sitting on the back porch overlooking ricefields the motorbikes of the farmer are parked right in front of you...Breakfast is only served at the restaurant, not at the ‘villa’...Restaurant looks like it is a private home where you are the intruder...For 850.000 a night I was expecting more

Hey Veronica, I'm sorry to hear that we did not live up to your expectations. Running an eco accomodation facility is labour intensive and requires continuous attention to details. As with many other places, surviving the pandemic has placed considerable challenges on the business. The high staff ratio of sustainable businesses makes those challenges even greater. We appreciate your valuable feedback and will look into all the issues you have raised. I can only say in our defense, please take the time to have a look at our last ten years of overwhelmingly positive review and then I hope you will see that our standard is usually very high. After surviving the last two years we are now reinvesting to get everything back up to 100%. Please do give us a second try when your next in Yogya and let us know that ist you so we can discuss your concerns with you personally and ensure everything is up to your expectations.

I have been to Yabbiekayu for five nights and had a hard time to leave. The bungalows are beautifully located in a village looking at the rice fields and between a welcoming garden with herbs, flowers and fruits. You can enjoy the sunrise from the bamboo shack where they also offer yoga classes. The rooms are very cozy and comfortable and the open air bathroom is lovely. Be prepared to enjoy the sounds of the nature as you will hear birds, frogs, rooters and friends...It is really nice. The team at Yabbiekayu is part of the very positive experience. Welcoming, well prepared and very efficient and friendly. Make sure you travel here with time to enjoy the space, the view and the comfortable rooms. The restaurant is also worth trying.

Yabbiekayu fine balance between contact with nature and cozyness is its great value. Location, architecture and gardens make up for great feeling of being close to basics of life. Decoration, attention to details, excellent service and healthy food does the cozy side. Very good concierge, stable and fast internet connection, nearby attractions, good wine list and a will to make your stay memorable completes the picture. It was an amazing experience, to be repeated in the near future.
