We stayed at NBR for a month this June during the pandemic. Could not have chosen a better place, it is extremely well run with very little you could ask more for. Most of the staff have been working there for years (some since opening 14 years ago?) and very friendly and helpful. The food is a good mix of Indonesian and western, and the dessert changes every night and were really some of the best cakes I've ever had in all of Asia. That's not an overstatement. Bar is a great place to watch the waves, and easily the best bar to relax at the end of the day. Rooms were super clean, well designed, well stocked. Surf boats and captains make getting out whenever you want very easy. Greg has a billion boards and fun equipment to take out. NBR just has everything covered, it's really the kind of place you could spend a month at and it feels like home.

OK first of all....I am not the surfer in the household. So my review is based on the wife's perspective. We (my husband, myself & my two daughters 15 & 17 years old) have had many surf trips and I would put this one on the top. The trip from Los Angeles to Nemberala was long but Waterways handled my husband's three surfboards, all of our luggage and transfers making it that much more comfortable. On our arrival to Nemberala we were greeted by the staff which made you instantly feel welcome. Throughout the whole stay the staff was always there to help you with any needs you might have during your stay.
After taking in the beauty of the resort and surroundings, we were excited to see the rooms. The pictures are exactly what you get....beautiful. I could of stay in them the whole time reading books and been quite happy. Ceiling fans, comfortable beds, mosquito nets (which always make everything look nice) & the stone bathrooms.
Our days were filled with morning walks or bike rides through the local village where we would either watch the kids play soccer, stop for a cold beer or just take in the views. One day we joined the locals and went to the farmer's market, priceless experience. My daughters did a lot of hanging by the pool and one even learned to surf.
Some of the highlights were.....the sunsets, massages, boat trip to other islands & the volleyball game with the locals.
We met some great people along the way and we have great memories of this trip. I would go back and hope to real soon. I would highly recommend this resort and so would the rest of my family.

NBR sets the bench mark of the highest standard ive come across during my 20 years of traveling. Theres only so much that the resort and its management and staff can do to make an enjoyable holiday experience- the rest is up to the quality of the surf. What they do offer is hands down the best service, care, facilities & cuisine and its all sincere. The management and staff take a genuine interest and care while youre staying here (nothing is ever a chore when looking after you) , the food is plentiful (what you need after 8hrs surfing each day) and damn tasty!
I mean what more could you want? World class waves at your doorstep (access made easy to uncrowded breaks by their boats), classy comfy rooms, a massage set up to relax and unwind, amazing food (so much so that you need to go home and diet!) lounge chairs by the pool, perfect service and cold beers on the beach overlooking the left out front!
I cant speak highly enough of the local staff and management and what they offer (extremely affordable) in this stunning part of the globe.

I Love Nemberala. I've done 5 or 6 Water Ways trips and it's my favorite. It's worth all the time to get out there. It's private, beautiful and the accomadations were VIP all the way. Unlike a Boat trip were room can be very tight, even on the high end boats, it's nice to roll around the property and play basket ball, Swim in the pool and eat at the best dinner hall i've ever scene at a surf camp. Rooms are super Clean and Plush. I slept great every night and mellowed out every day I was there.

For the Surf, I got it when the swell was huge for a week and the waves were almost to big for me. There is no line up for the waves other than the surfers staying there. It got pretty Huge and scary on a few days. The Guides were on point with keeping us in great surf and getting us back safely.

This trip isn't for a person trying to maximize a weeks vacation, but if you have 2 weeks, this trip is perfect. Private, 5 STAR and Perfect. It's hard to leave once you have been there.

What an epic trip with 6 of my best mates. First 3 days we had no waves, but that was no problem since there was so much else to do on the island. We had wind the same 3 days when it was flat and had epic kitesurfing. We also SUP'ed to the nearby islands, went spearfishing, line fishing, and had plenty of fun chilling at the resort drinking Bintangs while watching the sun go down.

The resort is fantastic, with great facilities, amazing food, and great hosts to make you feel at home and ensure that you are having a good time. It was nice not to break out the wallet until the end of the trip to pay for the Bintangs, as everything else is included.

Only complaint is that the wave (whilst fantastic), is WAY to crowded - more crowded than any wave even in Bali!

Nemberala beach resort is amazing. I have done many trips with Waterways surf travel over the last decade and they have always put me on the money. Nemberala beach resort caters for everyone from the hotshot surfer to the family man with his wife and kids.
Great pool, amazing location, loads of world class waves, stunning resort.

I stayed here for two weeks during august 09. I used to take a boat charter to the same location, most asked me how I liked the resort compared to the boat. I will say both have good and bad......
The resort is very comfortable and generally quiet. Rooms are nice and airy and use the natural trade winds for ventalation. (inside tip open the back gate of the bathroom area and the breeze comes right in) THe room has two ceiling fans and a floor fan which aided in the airy feeling. I had a very comfy king sized bed wich was remade daily and the room serviced daily. Nice black out curtains for the after surf naps.
Rooms are very nice for a surf hang out.
Food was quite good and they really had a varied menu, I dont think they had the same salad once and they served two a day. Staff is very friendly and cater to you needs.
THE SURF: some small days, some big days, some inbetween days and quite crowded one of the upcoming swell days. Don't expect to surf here by yourself on the premium days........but I did surf with very few people on 'off hours' tides.
the is no instant " i want to surf now!" at the resort, there is a 10 15 minute walk down the beach to the boat, the boat comes in, navigates the ropes, low tide, anchors, another 10 minutes and then finally out to the surf......want to surf a 8? leave at 7:30. boat stays out with you until you want to come in. ( not really a complaint just a reality)
on the charter you could be in the water in 5 minutes and you sat in the channel and could monitor conditions at all times and pick optimal moments to surf.
the left is always bigger than you think if you are checking from shore.
all in all the resort is quite organized, offers ping pong and pool table, volley ball and a golf pitch hole. Massage is great with either man or alex. and resonably priced.
you pay for drinks of any sort other than cold water.
The manager does a great job of keeping it all going and attends to requests very nicely.
All in all Nemberala Beach Resort is a very nice surfer hangout......

I went with some friends who surf well. I dont surf well but there is plent more to do. The fishing is amazing and they prepare it for everyone to share at night. The food was delicious. I intend to go back again soon. The location is remote so you will really get a chance to experience the true Indonesian culture. The jouney to get there is a exciting as the location. It is an experience that encompasses a very cultural trip with the relaxation of a vacation. A must!

My husband and I have just returned from our truly wonderful wedding, held at the Nemberala Beach Resort. At this point, words fail me... but I'll try :)

Having been to Rote twice before, we knew that the location was magical. However, the team at the resort made the week-long 'festivities' absolutely perfect. Greg, Yanto, Anita and all the staff were fantastic, and we will be forever indebted to them. Our family and friends, who had never been to the island before, had the time of their lives - fishing, surfing, diving, exploring and indulging in some R&R.

I can't recommend this place enough for everyone and anyone, and certainly if you are looking for a one-of-a-kind wedding destination! Thanks again team. With love from Kat and Brook.
