Fretheim Hotel boasts mountain and fjord views and is somewhere you can look, taste, listen and absorb magnificent nature. The hotel is immediately adjacent to the Nærøyfjord UNESCO World Heritage site. This fjord has been chosen as one of the world’s most beautiful destinations several times running! The hotel was built in Swiss chalet style at the end of the 19th century, and over the years has grown and developed in pace with the increase in tourists and travellers using the Bergensbana railway and, later, the famous Flåmsbana railway. The oldest part of the hotel has been carefully restored to reveal beautiful details, with open fires and antique furniture in the lounges, library, conference room and, not least, in all the historical guest rooms. Take yourself on a journey of discovery and enjoy the atmosphere of glory days past.

We booked two nights in a historic room, with dinner and breakfast included (NOK 6120 in January)
The room was good with plenty of space and facilities plus a warm comfortable bed. There was no TV but we didn't need one with plenty to do in Flåm. The Historic rooms are all unique with a 1900s style and ours (first floor) had a reasonable view of the village out towards the Fjord.
The provided bathtub was interesting but isn't that suitable when used with the shower (that had excellent water pressure). Even with the shower curtain water gets down the side of the tub and onto the floor. This is anticipated with a wet room style drain but it does mean the floor gets much wetter than the bath mat can cope with.
Breakfast was good - plenty of options, including hot food, plus slice yourself fresh bread from the local bakery.
Dinner was very tasty but the inclusive package only has one menu option so there's no choices. Also the drinks options are a touch pricey by Norway standards.
Overall it was a good hotel and we will return when next in Flåm.

At the check in we where granted by an extremely stubborn man that insisted that we (2 couples) had orders 4 rooms. I feel that we should have to pay for them if it was not for the fact that we where able to find an old email from them confirming the 2 rooms (this was a long carefully planned weekend). This process took about 30-40 minutes we had just hiked th 20 km long Aurlandsdalen and was ready for a shower and a beer. Finally with everything sorted and checked the rooms was in the historic part and was nice and comfy with a tub. The cleaning under the tub (it was open standing on lion feet) but all in all the room was very nice. In the restaurant they served a buffet which was very nice with a very service minded staff so food vice top notch even for an non buffet guy.
This hotel is quite hefty priced apart from the front man from hell it might almost be worth the hefty price tab. Flam area is very scenic and beautiful with lots of options to see the nature either by train, bike or boats or you can combine it taking the train ut to Myrdal and take bikes back down

We booked a room for two nights as part of our Norway in a Nutshell itinerary. I have to say that the hotel was absolutely gorgeous. The scenery all over was extremely beautiful and so was the architecture of the hotel itself. When we arrived at around 11 am, we were told that our room was not quite ready yet, but they were trying to prepare it as quickly as they could. We ordered some stew from the kitchen which was absolutely delicious and filling while waiting for our room. Not long after finishing, we were appointed to our room.

The room itself was nicely-sized, but I must admit that the beds were slightly on the firm side. Furthermore, the sofa bed was quite thin but still passable. Though, I don't think that anyone comes here with the rooms as their priority. The restaurant buffet was very good and had some interesting and large selections which were pretty satisfying. All the staff we interacted with was friendly and accomodating with our questions about the area and the activities we could do there.

Overall, if I do get a chance to come back to Flam, the Fretheim hotel is definitely the best in the area.

We kind of stumbled onto the Fretheim simply because there weren't a ton of options in Flam and we definitely wanted to spend a couple of nights here on the fjord. Everything was as wonderful as advertised. The location, looking down the Aurlandsfjord is difficult to beat and our view on the third floor from our balcony was truly special. While I would never describe our room as elegant, it was VERY clean, comfortable and fit our needs. What was best here, though, was the staff! EACH staff member was friendly and helpful, always looking to help make our stay more special! The perfect example of this was one of the women at the front desk (don't remember her name but she was from Catalonia) who chatted with us daily about things to do, helping make arrangements, setting us up with drinks from the bar (we were there JUST before the high tourist season began) and generally making us truly feel welcome and appreciated.

And if you are staying for more than a single night, I would recommend spending a little bit more to get one of the rooms on the American Wing with a balcony ... it's a perfect way to spend the evening or have a cup of coffee in the morning!

Just need to post a comment here to the staff at Fretheim Hotel. We were out of charging on our Nissan rented car.
Stranded in Flåm in the evening, luckily, we got a lovely room including a wonderful breakfast. But most important: the incredible service in trying to help us charging the car and never giving up.

Helper number one: First via the lovely gazebo in the beautiful garden with fruit trees and flowers(but didn't work out, cause our cable was too short and therefore impossible to transfer any electricity via the hotels extra line)

Helper number two: Then trying to charge at the hotels own charging station(but the hotels own new cable, didn't fit our car).

Helper number three: And third time lucky: stretching the cable through an open window at the back of the hotel. But first, a telephone to the owner (staff at the hotel) of the car in the parking in front of the window, asking politely if she please could remove her car for a while. And she came after two only two minutes! And our helper (in charge of the shift that day, could happily inform us, that the charging was on!

We returned after a couple of hours to collect our car. And our helper was again all smiles, asking if there was anything else we needed! Our reply: you have already done more than enough.
And how we found our stay. Our reply: couldn't be better!!! Service at a hotel, is number one, wich Fretheim Hotel, has proven to the fullest. And I must say, the best so far in Norway.
And he welcome us back for a stay another time. Our reply: Yes, already looking forward to the next stay.

After considering a tour of the west coast of Norway we aimed to stay at "De Historiske". However, after being late in booking hotels the only available accommodation was "Stabburet". Even though I was expecting somewhat a "rustique" facility this was like participating in the Norwegian reality show mirroring a 19th century farming experience called "Farmen". Even the smell was authentic. It was not possible to shower without flooding the whole bathroom. An interesting aspect with the booking itself was the information saying that there an available "jacuzzi" (badestamp). Even though we would never use it, it was interesting to see in what condition it was presented. (see pictures). After experiencing the logistical nightmare of checking out (dont mention spending 1 hour to find a parking place when checking) we agreed that this was not worth it.

Takk for din tilbakemelding.

Based on my experience of our stay here, if doing the Norway in a Nutshell Oslo to Bergen trip again in summer I would not do it with a night stopover in Flam. Instead I would press on to Bergen or stay a night in Voss.
This is because the accommodation and eateries in Flam are so very restricted in number and(therefore?) quality. Also when it's cruise ships season just one cruise ship, dominates and spoils the beauty of the fjord views.
This hotel was twice the price of our very good hotels in both Bergen and Oslo and we expected better than we got. Notably we did not get the room we booked. Instead of the deluxe double room we booked via Fjordtours with a balcony or garden door and a view of the fjord, we were given ( after a wait for the hotel's 4pm check-in)a back room facing a hill slope close by and a public footpath running in front- so when the light had to go on you had to close the curtains. Management could only offer a repurposed 4th floor single room, with a dormer window facing the front, as an alternative which we took on the basis that it was lighter. But this was not a satisfactory alternative.
Equally the restaurant was disappointing- very dark, cramped and crowded. On offer were just a 4 course set menu (765DK) or a buffet (595NK). We opted for the buffet but it was a bit of a bun fight with so many people and lack lustre food.
Thank goodness the management agreed not to charge us for the meal by way of addressing our room concerns.

While the Fretheim is a little pricey, due to its location and quality I felt it was worth it for my stay. It's clearly a busy place, popular with tour groups and others doing the Norway in a Nutshell itinerary. The rate for a single room was the most expensive of my trip, but it was just one night and did include dinner & breakfast so I went with it. I'm very glad I did as it was a great stay. I arrived early and they were able to store my bags while I was on the fjord cruise. My single room on the top floor was very cozy and had a fantastic view. The included dinner and breakfast buffets were very high quality (and do pre-purchase, it's much cheaper than paying there). If I had any complaints it' that the bathroom only had shampoo but no conditioner. Not the end of the world. Flam is worth staying in for a day and this is a great place to do so if you can swing it.

We booked one nights stay last minute and opted for a historic room... well it was historic, not in a good way. Everything in the room was 50-100 years old, musty and beyond tasteless. The curtains were 50 year old Walmart level shears and the lighting from outside shone right thru them, the rods were flimsy, rusted, and bent-broken. The meals were very sub par given the approximately $300 pr night price tag. Obviously caters to mediocre cruise ship type bookings. Only filthy overpriced hotel we stayed in on our two week road trip... A real shame because this hotel has great potential if renovated. They are seriously taking advantage of what they perceive to be a captive audience. The service at the front desk was exceptional, and food was edible, and great location, the story ends there

This is a lovely hotel. We stayed overnight as we waited our fjord cruise. The historic rooms are comfortable - though the shower was weird...we started to run it and discovered there wasn't a connection to a drain. The water ran thru the tub onto the floor and into a drain there. We promptly stopped the shower and gave up. The desk clerk when we checked out said the stopper was by the sink and admitted it was hard to figure out - instructions might have been nice!

Breakfast was included and was ok; because we got in late the night before we ate dinner in the hotel. It was also a buffet and while the food was adequate, it was not hot at all. The price was the second-highest of any we had while in Scandinavia (including 3 course meals in Stockholm and Helsinki) and not worth the cost. There was nothing on the website indicating a) no a la carte menu and b) what the cost of the buffet was, so we were surprised and a bit disappointed.
