Stayed here for 2 nights in Feb after our boat cruise. We walked from the harbour to the hotel, with our bags , took about 10mins
The hotel is situated right on the water, a beautiful setting which you can see from the restaurant or if you book a water facing room
We disembarked early from our cruise, around 9am , but the kind lady at reception allowed us to check in with no additional cost as our room was ready
Our room was spacious and a lovely big bathroom. There was a coffee and tea station and a fridge
Kirkenes is quite small and walkable but there is a bus stop right outside the hotel should you need a bus to the airport, although our one did not arrive. Reception contacted the bus company and they just said the bus was not going to run that morning which was not great
The breakfast was probably the best we had at any of the hotels we stayed at during our 16 day Norway holiday. Lots of variety, even a machine to squeeze fresh orange juice
Most companies who do excursions also pick up from the hotel which is very convenient

We were intrigued by the remote town of Kirkenes and decided to spend three nights here exploring prior to our Havila cruise. We rented a car at the airport, which was pricey but worth it.
The Thon is located five minutes by taxi from the cruise terminal, and about twenty minutes by car from the airport. Parking in front of the hotel was easy and free. The hotel is perfectly located along the fjord, with great views from all the common areas. Our room had a view of Kirkenes (not the water), which didn’t matter because we were going to be cruising on the fjords for five days.
The bed was extremely comfortable. The room was very clean, warm, and cozy, which was important since it was snowing the day we arrived. It could use a little more closet space, but the bathroom is large and well-thought out. There was a nice desk space in which to work. The room of course has blackout curtains, since it never really gets completely dark overnight in early May.
They offer free coffee in the lobby. And what about that breakfast? It was by far the best “included” breakfast of our whole trip, including the Havila cruise ship. It’s an amazing buffet with everything you can possibly think of, including many types of bread, and some Russian-influenced selections. Kirkenes is on the Russian border, by the way, so if you have a rental car, pay close attention to the warning signs.
We ate dinner at the hotel one night (there are some very good restaurants in town, too) and the service and food were wonderful! I would definitely stay here again.

I wouldn't say that The Thon Hotel is central in Kirkeness, however we chose to stay here for it's proximity to the Hurtigruten Cruise point and it's stunning views over the harbour to the North; views which did not disappoint. Half the rooms face inland, and half face the harbour, so do yourself a favour and pay for the water facing ones, it's worth it. Really friendly staff with a high level of service, with a very good selection for breakfast, probably one of the best varieties on our trip. We also ate dinner at the restaurant which was delicious and mostly locally sourced, with staff being very attentive to dietary needs. As mentioned we chose this hotel for it's north facing location which turned out to be one of the best decisions for our trip as this was our first glimpse of the elusive Northern lights which we don't think we would have seen from in the town. They have an outdoor terrace facing the harbour, and staff came and alerted us during dinner, and a lot of guests were out on the terrace watching. Staff were great at holding the food while the lights were out and a few even came out to watch as well. The only issue was the terrace did get very icy and windy, which was a bit of a dangerous combo, not sure what they could do about this though, maybe some extra handrails to hold on to? Couldn't otherwise fault our stay here and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. After dinner and the main show, we went up to our room and sat in the dark watching out the window which was magical. Kept the curtains open overnight and caught a few more lights if we woke up.

This hotel is very conveniently located a short taxi ride from the port for the Havila Cruise Ships. One can walk into town in about 10 minutes at a leisurely pace. There are shops and cafes and a pub in the small town as well as an historic WWII Bomb Shelter.
Our room was small, but very nice. The temperature in the room was quite pleasant. The King-sized bed was very comfortable with fluffy pillows. The en suite bathroom was modern and the towels were thick and soft.
The morning breakfast buffet had the largest, broadest offering of different foods that I have ever seen at any hotel breakfast buffet. It certainly appeals to Scandinavian, European, and American breakfast tastes. The hotel bar area was quite nice with lots of windows and several wine and liquor options. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant, so I cannot evaluate it.

The beautiful location right on the waterfront gave us an unobstructed view of the northern lights. The staff were very helpful. They set up a crib for our son, called taxis for us, and gave advice about stores and places that would be open. The best part was breakfast - honestly one of the best hotel breakfasts we have ever had! There was also coffee available in the lobby throughout the day which was a nice touch on these chilly days. Definitely recommend this hotel.

We really liked this establishment. Room with perfect fjord view, large, clean, an umbrella and a large shoe horn available. The fjord was frozen during our visit, the view is superb, I was even able to photograph a little aurora borealis through the window on the second evening. The Havila cruise ship arriving at 9 a.m., I asked if it was possible to check in as soon as we arrived. The receptionist very kindly gave us the key upon our arrival. Thanks to her! We didn't take the shuttle from the boat, we took a taxi, we paid 128 no, a little more than 11€. The breakfast is fantastic, there is something to satisfy all tastes... We had a drink at the bar in the evening but did not have dinner at the restaurant. We would return to this hotel if the opportunity presented itself. Easy to order a taxi to the airport, the journey is quick, it cost us 451 NOK, or around €40.

This was my second time staying at this hotel, and my experience this time was very similar to the first time, seing as the hotel has not changed since last year. -The breakfast was fabulous, however i wish that hotels could have a clearly marked "quiet zone" in the breakfast halls, for people who does not want to listen to screaming babies and toddlers early in the morning while having breakfast and coffee, when on vacation. This is not the hotels fault that this happens, it's just the spirit of our times that parents have no control of their children, but it really ruins childless peoples experience on vacation when this happens. -The staff in the breakfast hall was super slow with the cleaning of tables, i tried to get contact with several of them several times, and when i asked one lady if she could please clean a table so that we could take a seat she just grunted and was clearly annoyed that i asked for such a thing. -The room was ok, i loved the bathroom, but the rubber on the shower doors was dirty and one had even broken off. So i wish that the hotel could spend some money to buy new ones and upgrade, it's disgusting and makes the entire quality of the hotel decline. It looked and felt shabby. - We went to the restaurant just to get a drink during the evening, but at first they didn't want to let us take a seat because appearantly the restaurant was "full" even though half of it was empty, and when we said we just wanted drinks we were allowed to sit near the bar. -No light-blocking curtains in a hotel above the arctic cirkle makes no sense, still.

There aren't many places to stay while in Kirkenes, so I assumed the lack of competition would make this hotel a bit lazy about offering great service, but nothing could be further from the truth. The hotel itself was clean and modern and our water-facing room was comfy and very well equipped, with an incredible view. And even though our floor was undergoing extensive rewriring, it didn't inconvenience us at all. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the included breakfast was one of the best we experienced while in Scandinavia. They have a nightly charge for parking, but you can park for free right across the road. I highly recommend the Thon when in Kirkenes.

We stayed 1 night post Hurtigruten cruise in a superior room.
The room was OK, has a good size shower, nespresso machine, sachets of tea, body lotion, shower gel etc.
We really like that Thon, unlike their competitors provides a real hotel room for guests to stay jn. Some other places we stayed in Norway didn't even provide a shower cap or bedroom slippers in the name of going green.
Also, we were impressed that the hotel was not sticky on check in time, allowing us an earlier check in and being generous with coffee and tea at the reception area.
All in a good stay and we highly recommend.

A good place to stay overnight (as we have done on several Winter occasions) or for a longer period as we have just done in Summer. The only drawback in Summer if the weather is warm to hot is that the rooms are only ventilated and not air conditioned. For fiord-facing rooms, the single opening window is restricted to only a slight angle (presumably because on occasion strong winds arrive from the north across the fiord) but this means that the window is almost useless to allow in cooler overnight air. Block-out curtains could be more effective to keep out the Summer "midnight sun". For longer stays, there is virtually no storage (shelves) onto which one can unpack one's small clothes and the hanging space is tiny for two occupants. Nor are there two suitcase stands which would be useful since one has to keep small clothes, etc in one's suitcases (see comment above). The restaurant is excellent for both breakfast and dinner (not open for lunch but a lunch picnic lunchbox can be ordered). Staff are friendly and helpful.

Just remember everything closes on Sunday. There is a Shell garage nearby and it has a small store. There is also a small supermarket with very limited lines. Both are open on Sunday.

If you are cruising on the Hurtigruten Cruise line try to book the tour through the cruise line. Here on Trip advisor those of us answering your question are only people who have stayed in Kirkenes at the Thon Hotel. We cannot give you information about your particular itinerary. You can probably book the tour through the hotel as well. Contact the Thon with your question. BTW enjoy the trip it was awesome. We saw the Northern Lights in Kirkenes!!
