Went with a small group of friends, no table service but friendly and efficient at the till. Limited wines at the bar, wide range of Asian and local meals on menu. Meal delivery slow and some meals not as hot as they could have been, gluggy sauce etc.

Have stayed here a few times on the way up the east coast. The menu is mainly Asian and is fantastic in quality, huge servings and more than reasonable in price. All the staff are lovely to deal with and have a great attitude A group booking of 12 they charged us $35 per head which is dirt cheap in this day and age, The rooms are air conditioned and there is a gorgeous view over the river, Best value for money by a long shot

Best little pub / motel I’ve stayed in for a long time. The staff are so helpful and they have a great attitude to make you enjoy your stay. The beer was cold and the Chinese/Aussie food is fantastic. We even had the good luck to see a band the nite we stayed. Cheap , basic and clean rooms $30 per person because their was 10 of us they looked after us. Do yourself a favour and stay a nite with these amazingly friendly people it will make you realise life can be simple and good.

A family friendly venue, reasonably priced, Australian style chinese and Aussie pub meals. Friendly staff and quick service. Variety of beer on tap and variety of wine by the glass. A nice place to sit and relax on the deck.

We enjoyed our stay at the Retreat hotel/motel on the Nicholson river in East Gippsland. The owners, Adam and Ginni are welcoming and friendly and go out of their way to please, they didn't hesitate to accomodate any of our requests and always had time for a chat. The food in the bistro was very good and they have a Chinese menu as well as normal bistro fare, Adam and Ginni, both chefs, also take credit for running the kitchen. Rooms are comfortable and large and in the process of an upgrade.

The best Singapore noodles in the area... Numerous variations including vegetarian & prawn (my favourite). Chief added his own special chilli sauce when asked to spice it up, lots.. Absolutely delicious. Lovely staff. Situated next to the gorgeous Nicholson River is a great added bonus.

When my local relatives suggested this Bistro for dinner for the twelve of us, I was a bit unsure. The outside doesn't have much street appeal, although it has a good position overlooking the river. We drove here from Bairnsdale in under 15 min. Don't go on first appearances. The meals were excellent! Our tables choices ranged from Chinese on a sizzling hot plate, battered flathead and chips which was perfectly cooked, decent sized Caeser salad, and a big serve of chicken parmagiana. The kitchen got all this variety out to us pretty quickly, and we weren't the only group there. A mix up with an order, partly our fault, meant one missed out on their Chinese meal, as promised it was cooked and delivered after 5 mins by the very friendly and obliging staff!

We had (thoroughly enjoyed ) a Chicken Parma (which was a real chicken breast, and very moist )and combination omelette. Both were extremely tasty, and the drinks were reasonably priced, and very cold. A VERY enjoyable dining experience. We WILL be back. The dining room is spacious, and has great views. Well worth a stop -even if it 's only for a cold drink. ( I am unable to comment on the rooms, and I did not see inside them )

Christmas 2015 our Paynesville neighbours convinced us to join them for Christmas lunch at The Retreat Hotel, Nicholson. We were sceptical but my wife was attracted to the idea of not cooking Christmas lunch. We went and it was superb so this year another two neighbours also joined us after our raves reports. And it was even better. Hot finger food and bilinis followed by seafood platters made up for four to share comprising a lobster (halved, meat removed, diced and placed back in shell), oysters, king prawns, mussels and a half crab each. Main course selection (No limits) were three roasts, about eight vegetables and rolls. Dessert options totalled ten and I "sampled" four, including individual plum puddings. Complimentary coffee and shortbreads to finish. All for $70/pp, outstanding value for the quality, quantity and variety. Only downside was the air conditioning struggling to cope on a very hot day. Highly recommended!…
