I chose the Chai Lai Orchid based on several reasons. One, ethical reason, two, what kind of activities they offer, and three, my budget. Walking with the elephants and feeding them was an amazing experience, and I would love to do it again! (Must do!) Visiting a hill tribe family was a wonderful experience as well. Bamboo rafting was nice...

I stayed in one of the nature bungalows for 3 nights in December 2016. Arranging transportation through messages with Alexa was easy and the driver showed up promptly as scheduled. Upon arriving, I was greeted with a coconut and a smile. Excellent hospitality throughout the three days; the girls helped book any excursion or ride I needed and the food...

Elephant Kisses... need I say more?! This was my most favorite day in Thailand! Our day was truly magical!! We were picked up at our hotel right on time and taken to the Chai Lai Orchid. We went as a group of 4 and we're pleasantly surprised to have all of the activities done privately instead of in a larger...

Please don't let the negative reviews fool you. This was by none one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and the love and respect shown to the elephants at both the homestay with the Chai Lai Sisters with the retired elephants and at the Chai Lai Orchid was out of this world. The bond and trust between the...

Their heart is in the right place but was really disappointed by the care of the elephants. It is described as a sanctuary but this is not the case. Firstly, I should make clear that the Chai Lai Orchid do not own the elephants. They hire them for visits but they are looked after by the same mahouts and kept...

This is a lovely place with great ethics. Chai Lai Orchid helps support vulnerable girls and offers them a place to work. It was nice to have the opportunity to share our home with 12 elephants! Chai Lai help the elephants by hiring them for half a day to allow them rest from chair rides (we particularly liked this aspect)....

Clearly a lot of the reviewers on here don't understand that Chai Lai is a social business teaching hospitality skills to refugees and women at risk of trafficking. That's what it is. And it's the only place like it in Chiang Mai. Sure there are other elephant "sanctuaries" that spend tons of so-called nonprofit funds on public relations and Western...

Interacting with the elephants was an incredible experience. We got to feed them sugar cane and they seemed so happy and kept begging for more. Bathing DeeDee the elephant was so fun and she really seemed to be enjoying herself. Our guide (Alex, I think) was very friendly and answered all of our questions about the elephants. I was a...

We stayed at the retreat for 2 nights and had the most amazing time - bamboo rafting down the river, early morning elephant walks in the jungle, bathing the elephants and disconnecting from busy Thailand. *** No, they are not mistreated. Elephants seem to be having fun and are cared for. It seemed like they were in their natural habitat...

While I love these women and that the proceeds help prevent human trafficking, its important to managing expectations. No, this is not an elephant sanctuary. Chai lai was created to give local at-risk women job skills in hospitality so they don’t fall into the sex trade. When the owners of Chai Lai realized they were next door to an elephant...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Chai Lai Orchid is a nature retreat nestled beside the river and surrounded by lush tropical forest. The eco lodge is a social business working to empower Karen and Kayan women. Here you can spend your days swimming with elephants in the river, lounging hammocks, and trekking to visit near by waterfalls and hill tribe villages. The Chai Lai Orchid is currently working to rescue elephants from their daily chair tours and long hours.
