Bird Island Resort

Route 100 Cape Shore Loop, St. Bride's, Newfoundland and Labrador Canada
The hotel is clean and all rooms have well equipped kitchens. We chose to eat at one of the local restaurants and Dan honestly say that the meal at “Da Birds Eye”was so fresh we joked that the fish were caught especially for us.

Nice spot for one night while travelling around Newfoundland. Views and property were very nice. Outstanding view from the suite porch. Hotel/suite was basic and beds were not great but it met our needs. Staff were friendly and helpful. One take out/restaurant near by that we enjoy enjoyed yes back at the suite porch.

This is a very simple resort, run for years by the same family. It offers clean and welcoming efficiency units: ours had two bedrooms, a bathroom a kitchenette and a small living area--all with a stunning view of the ocean. Be forewarned that there is no dining room or food offering, but the affiliated store has all manner of basic foods to prepare in your kitchen. The drive to St. Bride's on Hwy #100 is one of my favourite rides in Canada, and the closeness to Cape St. Mary's makes it perfect destination. The folks at the resort are warm and welcoming. We may go back for a long stay!

First impression: the musty smell of damp, 'rustic' 1950/60s furniture (and not in the hip cool retro way) and rusted, salt-sprayed doors. Second impression: our entire family (husband and two teenage daughters) loved this place, and it remains in our memory one of the favourite parts of our Avalon Peninsula tour. Why, you might ask? Well, first it is on a stunning property, with incredible cliffside ocean views and a fantastic beach. Second, it is very close to the St Mary's Bird Resort. Third (but by no means the least) it is authentic. Not, glossy over-produced replica authentic, or Holiday-Inn fake french chateau authentic - but REAL. So if you truly want to see a bit of smalltown rural Canada, this is your place. Don't expect espresso machines and generic bedding, Pottery barn style futniture wannabees or waffles for breakfast around the country kitchen. You can expect beautiful evenings overlooking the ocean, a swingset that provided endless amusement for the entire family, a fusty old oven to warm up baked beans (purchased at the local store) and a card game around an old table on dulled linoleum floors. Loved it. Excellent. Thank goodness there are still small bits of authencity left in the world.

Color me surprised. I first stayed here in 1998. Walter Manning kept the place in tip-top shape. I more recently stayed here in 2019, and the place was in disrepair. Mr. Manning had passed away.

I booked two rooms for a private tour, andI expected it to be borderline unusable. Instead, the two rooms I booked had new appliances, new beds and sheets, new counter tops and cabinets, and new flooring. There's even a new laundry room.

I am impressed!

This is not a RESORT, property overlooks the ocean, set of old steep stairs and railing go down to water, old wooden swings, small mini golf (too windy to play) and numerous oversized picnic tables scattered about. Exterior doors have been replaced or painted since previous visit. Fence painting and construction and painting of new picnic tables was taking place.

Stayed several nights in unit #2, small efficiency 2 bedroom unit with newer large frig and stove, small tv with 30+ channels, closest accomodation for birding at Cape St Mary. Windows with screens allow good breeze but there is still some musty smell, carpet & kitchenette floor needs cleaning, tub surround and showerhead need some work, front screen needs to be replaced, microwave is perched on top of frig and no work area in kitchen. Bedding & curtains seemed newish, not enough towels were left for several days, bottled water is provided because of tannins in water. Wifi works well inside the motel on property.

The other motel rooms do not have screens on windows and building smells very musty so would not stay in one of these 11 rooms.

This is a motel with some self-catering units on the Cape Shore route in the Avalon region of Newfoundland. We stayed in a self-catering unit which had basic furniture and utensils and had the overriding feeling of being outdated. Having said that, the rooms were clean and tidy and were good value for money. The best thing about this place is the views - stunning!

We stayed in the larger building in an efficiency unit with kitchen and separate bedroom. Unfortunately, the musty smell was overpowering and the windows were just about impossible to open. The furnishings were very dated, old and tired, but the room was clean. There's a detached unit closer to the cliff... looks newer, so might not have the same issues. It's a really beautiful spot and close to incredible Cape St. Mary's.

Response from G2014_2, Web Master at Bird Island Resort
Responded 12 May 2014
Ocean storms and especially fierce winter storms, can pull large amounts of seaweed from the shallow ocean bottom just offshore, and the waves pile this seaweed onto the beach. When the spring thaw comes the seaweed begins to decompose thus causing a smell. Another storm will usually come and then wash most of this seaweed back out to sea. We apologize to our past and future guests, and ask our guests to please understand that owing to our wild and remote location on the edge of the sea, we are unable to take steps to control nature.

Wonderful views and close to the cape reserve. Our room was a two bedroom unit in the motel. It was fine but certainly needed some maintenance. The owners were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the gannets. By the way the the walk to the reserve was easy but it certainly takes 30 minutes or so. The restaurants in the area are not exceptional so you might want to buy groceries and skip eating out.

This is a very basic motel in small town Newfoundland that likely only sees visitors for half the year. The units can be rented monthly as well. So the rooms are dated, tired and drab, tidy but not super clean.
We enjoyed a beautiful sunset and the location of the motel, right next to the ocean completely unobstructed, is 5 stars! And the pressure of the showers is wonderful.

Stayed in the efficiency unit 102. It was immaculate, cozy, clean, fresh and lovely. Len Manning was extremely helpful, kind and knowledgeable. If we needed anything he was there and was always around. We were hesitant when we arrived based on previous reviews, and it was nothing like what was reviewed in the past. The grounds were really nice, there is a fireplace outside which Len was willing to light up for the evening for us. There is a mini putt-putt which is so cool. There is the family store Mannings who are the owners of the property. They were ever so helpful. You can get your wine supply for them and enjoy a sundowner on your patio! Thanks to Pat Manning for advising us to take the scenic route. It was just beautiful and breathtaking. Thanks to Tania for supplying us with more than sufficient towels and water.. The weather was beautiful while we were there. The location is ideal to visit Cape St. Mary to see the gannett colony. The location is not far from the resort, as well, take a trip into the town of Branch which is equidistant to that of St. Bride's from the Ecological centre. A small cute village with a restaurant. Stopped there for coffee and apple pie and rhubarb pie which was awesome. Even if you are not interested in the Ecol centre and wish to get away from the hub, Bird Island Resort is the place to be. We experienced such tranquility and comfort and we were made to feel special. My parents and I felt very sad to leave after 2 nights and wished we could have stayed longer , but we had to continue our trip. It felt like we were leaving a good friend ie Len. Having travelled around Newfoundland and experienced Newfoundland hospitality which there is none to compare, our stay at Bird Island was literally TOPS! Len thanks for hooking us up for the fish and fatback and we loved chatting with you. You made our stay !!!
