Firstly and foremost this is a stunning hotel in a fabulous spot in Grenada. The suites are wonderful, we stayed in number 5 which was upstairs and I would recommend this as it gives lovely views of the garden and the beach. Next time we visit we shall ask for number 1 or 2 which are both right on the beach..... You really couldn't ask for more, so comfortable with everything you need and a few little extras but I won't spoil the surprise. The Rhodes Restaurant is faultless, wonderful service, wonderful food and wonderful ambience - the saxophonist on a Monday evening is brilliant! The Beach Club is equally fabulous and a great place to chat to other guests over a cocktail or two. We were on a half board basis which worked well for us, the Sands beach bar almost next door is a lovely little spot for lunch or a sundowner and is very friendly and welcoming... The craft brewery less than 5 minutes along the road is good fun and shows the GrandPrix and probably other sporting events, there is a salsa night and open mic - it's good fun and friendly. There are a couple of restaurants within walking distance but we didn't try them ....so can't comment. Take the local bus to St Georges and wander up to the Fort it has it's own story....have lunch in BB's Crabback looking out to the marina and go snorkelling with Scubatech on the beach at the Calabash, they are great and very patient especially if you want to try a trial dive..... it's all worth it! So you may be wondering why I haven't given this hotel a 5 - it's all about the beach! There needs to be a beach attendant to look after the beach, clear glasses, used towels, replenish towels and provide a beach service to guests. The staff at the Beach Club are expected to do this and they don't have time as they run the bar at the Beach Club and the restaurant and that's a full time job. If the Calabash fix this then this will be the most perfect hotel out there - would I go back? Of course I would...… don't let this put you off! Thank you Calabash for a wonderful holiday.

I’ve had the privilege of travelling to many countries and have stayed in a lot of hotels. Some have been outright shocking, others amazing modern behemoths of opulence. Calabash is probably the best hotel experience I have had. Rather than describe all the facilities etc, I’ll attempt to capture why it was so good. Firstly it is one of only two family owned hotels on the island. The owners always gave BC a quiet presence and make time to meet and chat with all guests during the stay. Secondly, and I think this follows on naturally from point 1, the staff are well looked after and very happy in their work. Many have worked there “for ever” and take a pride in their roles. They all get that you are there to relax and see it as their job to ensure this happens. The service was brilliant yet relaxed. Thirdly: even when fully occupied. The complex never felt crowded. People were nicely spread over the beach, the pool, their suites and off on excursions. There was no queuing or waiting around. Blissful relaxation.

Top property. Wonderful professional staff. Impeccable suite with separate lounge kitchenette area & big covered veranda. Canapés delivered every night at 6 pm Implacably run & implacably clean. Only thing I will say is that a beach attendant is needed. Take a snorkel trip with the diving guys, great fun. Thank you to everyone there; a truly memorable holiday.

We visited for 3 weeks in Seotember, on full board. Apparantly, the hotel is closed for maintenance in August and September, but Covid changed this and they were open. Very quiet; at one time only a dozen guests were present, but it just meant more attention for us. We liked the peace and quiet : seemed odd when many more guests, mostly regulars, turned up at the end of the month. Covid caused a 7pm curfew to be imposed the evening that we arrived, Shops, restaurants, the town, bars, scenic spots and ven the beaches were shut or restricted. Rules were being relaxed the day we left. Grenadad was sending us a message! Being largely confined to the Calabash was just wonderful. Accomodation was excellent (we had a De Luxe from memory) near the beach. Hotels are made by their staff, and all of them were really exccellent. Friendly, amusing, very attentive, just lovely! This seems to be a feature of Grenadians in particular. Turned out that we had the two best restaurants on the island, inspired and created by the late Gary Rhodes. Once breakfast had passed in a traditional English way, the other meals were haute quisine par excellence. After three weeks, we were feeling overwhelmed! We were on all inclusive, which we usually avoid. Not wise here! A la carte eating would be quite expensive, but we had access to everything on the menus. The house wines were fine; coctails available, ; a great range of rum. I had a one to one tutored tasting which was fascinating and really enjoyable. I took sisx pages of notes to the amusement of the bar staff watching me! The room mini bar was full of nibbles, wines, beers, spirits, the ice bucket topped up every day. Thes things are best avoided, but not at the Calabash! Swimming in the bay was like being in a calm warm bath. Sandy beach gave way to a blanket of invasive sea grass that fills the bay from about 15 metres off-shore. Alegedly cut back by a couple of local residenst to keep the beaches clean, we never saw anyone in the tree weeks. I do hope they keep this under control, or the beach will go the same way as a Maldivian hotel we know - unusable, and awash with rotting washed-up weed. A great character took us around the island on two days. Dave Thomas, a big burly man, very amusing, informative, and a gem for helping us to understand the recent turbulent histiry of the island. Dave' s Tours: 473-404-9843 if you wnat a great day out. Grenada was a find. We must return to see the bits shut to us. But the Calabash and its staff gave us a superb holiday, and we will - must - return. Especially as 400 metres from the hotel is the West Indies Craft Beer Company and brewery, which I managed to get into over the last few days. I love my beer - these are certainly different, but well worth trying. I will try harder next time!

Thank you also for your very kind and heartwarming comments. Your words perfectly describe what we are trying to achieve. We always keep an eye on the progress of the sea grass to ensure it doesn't creep to far froward! And, as I always say, what makes Calabash special is the people, both guests and staff. So thank you for contributing to our happy atmosphere.

This hotel has consistently received 5 star awards and rightly so for the lovely setting, good service (especially Front Desk who dealt with all enquires/ queries very efficiently) and fabulous rooms: spacious, comfortable with everything one would expect and more: comfortable bed, excellent powered shower, powerful hairdryer, ice bucket automatically filled every day, fridge with fresh milk, ample bottled water, Nespresso and tea. On arrival also a bottle of excellent rum punch. Where my review differs from others is mainly regarding the dining: There is only one option for dining in the evening (room service menu same). Gary Rhodes restaurant where the cuisine is very dated. Intense flavours, sauces over reduced, tiny portions, over salted, most menu items taste the same even though there were daily specials, nothing tasted very fresh or light and menu is over priced. The ‘grill’ choices included aubergine which was undercooked every time, so it was inedible. In contrast the lunch menu at the Beach Club is fantastic - good variety and choices, very fresh, beautifully executed, would have loved to be offered this menu or similar in the evening. We did discuss this with hotel team and the chef, but apart from one dining evening when a couple more suitable different light excellent dishes were added to the menu, it was back to 'same old' next night. My other comment not written elsewhere is about the beach. It is a lovely cove but quite inset so not much movement with the sea. Half our stay the water felt murky and very muddy underfoot likely to come from the many yachts in the bay. The sea here is not the stunning aqua marine you find on many other of the beaches. Plenty of sun beds, very comfortable. Sadly on several occasions we had to go in search of towels (usually from pool, which is small, lovely but not used much). The service was a bit hit and miss at times except experience with Front Desk/Concierge and at Rhodes which was consistently excellent. Staff are lovely but some of particular note include a new recruit Shandy who was professional, attentive, efficient and charming and Desianne at breakfast who has worked there forever! Overall we enjoyed our stay, it is a comfortable, beautiful well maintained property with fabulous well designed and equipped suites. If dining options changed, we’d be back in a flash!
