My wife and I have a favourite circular walk of about ten miles in the Wylye Valley which we've being doing a couple of times a year for many years, mainly on Sunday afternoons. In the past, we always finished the walk in Stockton on late-afternoon to find the pub closed. Once, we waited around until 7pm then had a...

Beautiful, clean, homely, country pub. Kind and considerate staff, in a remote location, which was perfect as I was meeting family half-way. Perfect for our needs. Lovely roast lunch, with all locally sourced ingredients. Not a massive choice of things if that's what you desire, no good for vegetarians, vegans etc.

We booked a table for their Valentine's Day event, which was a special set menu and a free drink. The food was very good and it was excellent value for money. Tables were sprinkled with paper rose petals and had lit candles. Perhaps the lighting could have been more subdued to aid the atmosphere but that's a small niggle. The...

Drawn to this establishment via a sign on the a36! - very good decision to take a detour. This really is an excellent country establishment - we were warmly welcomed and treated to an excellent Sunday lunch - the beef was succulent. The beer was well kept and the team behind the bar excellent. I would say that the Sunday...

Stopped here for lunch on the way home from holiday, as when we did the same last year in April 2013 we found this pub and had a lovely lunch. This time however wasn't as impressed. It was a Saturday lunchtime but there was no lunch menu. No sandwiches or soup on offer. I had a pasta with roasted vegetable...

I have lived in this village for 16 years and have seen The Carriers Arms in good times - and in more recent times not so good. I am delighted to say that under new landlords Mark and Anna very ably supported by Laura have turned this country inn around impressively. The range of local beers (Sheep Dip and micro...

Booked lunch here based on previous reviews and enjoyed a warm welcome in a local's pub complete with visiting dogs (always an encouraging sign). Menu brief and interesting. Ordered steak, and leek, mushroom suet pud. So far so good despite tarragon overload, then hair found in food. Not a disaster in itself and reported quietly to waitress. When coming to...

I have visited this pub several times and had high hopes for it under its new ownership. Although the interior is sadly lacking the cosiness of many pubs in this valley, the food has made it well worth visiting. Superb pub food (superior pub food at that). Great well kept beer. When the pub has been busy it has been...

Changed hands again recently, and unlike most pubs, is actually getting better with each change! New food menu is brilliant, and the beer is now absolutely spot on. Looked like a work in progress as was a little sparse in furnishings, but no doubt will improve over time as new administration hadn't been in long. Had the steak pudding(!) which...

Having remained closed since April this year The Carriers reopened on Friday 6th September under new ownership. Mark (Mac) Norton and Anna Hayden have taken over the pub. Three real ales on at the time of our visit Plains Sheep Dip, Arty Farty and Inntrigue. All really well kept and very drinkable. Pub is spacious and welcoming, the reopening has...
