We were very happy to stay at this casa. The rooms were spacious, immaculate and just very nice. The hosts are extremely friendly and helpful and cooked the best breakfast and amazing lobster dinner. We would all recommend to stay here when at Playa Giron!
I spent 7 nights in Miguel’s and Odalys’ casa and for the most part it was a pleasant experience. I want to split this review into positive and negative things staring with the positive ones. The room is very clean and spacious. There is a fridge that is filled with soft drinks, beer and water and hosts will refill it when needed. Bathroom is good and shower has hot water as promised. There is also an AC that works well. Nice detail is the separate 220 V electric plug in the wall. The lounge area outside the room has nice chairs and it's in the shadow. Next to it are the tables where breakfast and dinner is served. Breakfast is excellent with coffee, fried eggs, bread, fruits, bacon and all kind of stuff. Every time more than I could eat (more about this later). Dinner is good as well and when it comes to amount, it is even more difficult to swallow than breakfast. When I arrived, Miguel asked what I liked and they cooked accordingly. You won’t be hungry! They also provide laundry service. The location is okay for a town this size. Everything is accessible by walking. There are few restaurants in the town and all of them can be reached by walking. I was surprised how far the beach is from the village. With a burning sun it wasn't very pleasant to walk there and I ended up using bicycle taxis to get to beach (1 CUC). Play Girón is not one of those beach towns where beach is just in the backyard. Miguel speaks very good English and in general is very friendly and welcoming. He was also very helpful. I saw him changing a flat tire for two guests. Odalys was a bit difficult to understand every now and then. Sometimes she was smiley but other times felt like she is very angry. Then the negative observations. This is the obvious one but there are roosters just next door so get ready for ear plugs or early wake-ups. The dinner table is next to rooms so if guests decide to have beer and get noisy there, you might have some troubles getting a sleep. I had this issue on the first night. For various reasons I had to change my plans and stay here 7 nights instead of 9 I originally planned. They allowed me to use their phone to get things forward, but there was a weird and awkward “we knew you are not going to stay here 9 nights” conversation. I don’t know if they were angry or what because I changed the plans - after all I stayed here 7 days and notified the change multiple days ahead. Based on my experience most tourists are here max 1-3 nights. After that I also felt like Odalys' mood changed quite often. Sometimes she was smiley and other times didn’t reply to my greetings or didn’t even watch me when I tried to talk to her. I don’t know if it just her style, humor or if things got lost in translation, but I didn’t really get it every time and there were multiple times when I felt like she wants me to leave. However, on the last morning she was very friendly and said nice things so who knows. I just noticed other guests have complained about her. One of the constant complains I got from them was about eating. Every food they made was excellent and I told this to them many times! However, quite often they whined because I didn’t eat some of the food. The only reason was that there was just too much of it! But I still kept hearing the same whining over and over again. One evening, when Odalys gave me the food she just grumbled: “Eat everything!” I thought this was just for me, but then two girls stayed at the same place and they got the same treatment. I really liked their food, but I had to eat on a local restaurant few times because I didn’t want to hear the whining and see Odalys’ angry face when she cleaned the table. All that being said their casa really is a good place to stay and with improvements on customer service how guests are treated this could be great place.…
We can not begin to how to tell you how thrilled we were to have stayed at Miguel and Odalis's casa. They are amazing hosts with so much to share about their beautiful country. The meals were ridiculously well presented, unbelievably delicious and incredibly large!! (They think we eat like birds in Canada, by the way....) The rooms were impeccably clean and no attention to detail overlooked. Would recommend their B&B to anyone who wants to experience the "real" Playa Giron.....grass roots style.
The rooms and bathroom are impeccably clean with air con and a fan, and breakfast was old too (indeed all or Casa breakfasts in Cuba were good - this place was no exception). We felt we were let down by Odalys and Miguel, sadly. They had us down in their diary for the following night, so asked us to stay in their aunt’s casa (La Gallega, which is just as clean, in fact nearer to the beach, and the host was far more welcoming). There was no apology, no assumption there was confusion, just that we had come on the wrong night (I will add I’m fluent in Spanish so nothing was lost in translation). As we were booked for three nights, Odalys expected us to return. This was inconvenient for us; we would have simply preferred to stay where we were as were settled (and it was better located)! However, her aunt with whom we were staying informed us that Odalys would be really annoyed if we didn’t return and so asked us to go back for the second and third nights. It wasn’t our fault Odalys got her dates wrong, but we also didn’t want to start a family feud. Indeed, that day Odalys had come by to check when we were coming so she was expecting us, which would have made not staying with her a little awkward. Other annoying things were that any question I asked seemed to put them out. For example, I asked Odalys if we could have breakfast at 7.30am the next day. She asked me, ‘Why do you need to be up so early?’ I was really annoyed I had to explain myself. I said we liked to get up early but if 8 was easier for her... she confirmed it was, so we had breakfast at 8! I know, the customer isn’t always right here. We felt like we were told off because we didn’t eat the ham they served for breakfast, something along the lines of: “We noticed you didn’t touch the ham at all. We have bacon today but don’t ask for it if you’re not going to eat it.” All in all, clean place but sadly the hosts ruined it for us. Go to La Gallega instead. …
