Marramarra Lodge is so close from Sydney yet feels so far away. Departure is perfectly coordinated and departs on a private boat by very skilled staff. You are greeted to the island lodge and immediately know it's going to be a relaxing and comfortably stay. Pip, Nick and the staff are fantastic and always made us feel welcome and attended to every need. We stayed in the tent which is more of a luxury eco tent with all the amenities included which includes a fully stocked minibar and fridge. There are plenty of activities if you prefer to be active including kayaking, bushwalks and hiking and plenty of relaxing spots for a more peaceful and lazy stay including a great massage at the spa. Food was great and the staff were very attentive to our requests (wife was pregnant and therefore had food restrictions). Degustation dinners nightly with paired wines (not for wife unfortunately) were delectable. A perfect place to unwind, rejuvenate and escape the city rush!

Less than an hour from Sydney you could be miles away at Marramarra. We just spent 3 wonderful nights in a “tent” defined by canvas walls and roof but with the feel of a luxury cabin. With glorious views of the river from the large deck and awakening to the sound of birdsong relaxation comes easily. The staff are excellent, the food plentiful and delicious and there’s a lot or very little to do depending on your inclination. Highly recommended.

Getting to the Lodge is the start of your stay as it’s by a short boat trip up the river. A lovely way to start a long weekend away! You just park at the free car park and they will either pick you up in the morning or afternoon. There are two types of accommodation and we stayed in No. 6 which is partly a tent. Tent roof with two sides also tent. Very nicely done and we also checked out the huts and were equally very nice. Our place was spotless and in near new condition. The place has only been open a year and even that was disturbed by COVID. The staff, fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was superb, the matching wines just as good and the service on all fronts was top notch. Tip, you are remote so make sure you bring everything you might need as you can’t just pop down to the shops! It’s early days for the property and they still have some things to work on but it’s a great place worth visiting as a couple or a group.

Room Tip: Take everything you might need. The huts are warmer in winter than the tents.

Marramarra lodge is the rare embodiment of quintessentially understated modern Australian luxury; from being picked up from the wharf to the final glass of wine, the entire experience is a pleasure. The location is super private and just the right distance on the private boat ride in to feel like you’re embarking on an adventure without sacrificing any facilities that you would expect in a similarly priced experience. Service is highly personal from a very small team who not only remembered individual preferences on our short two night stay but also seemed genuinely interested in us and passionate about their work. Perhaps the most outstanding aspect of the lodge is its food - the amazing six course degustation at night, two courses at lunch and a perfect breakfast in the morning would all hold their own in any Sydney CBD hatted restaurant, with the added bonus that the chef comes out for a chat! Wines were matched perfectly and every course left us wondering how the next could possibly top it. We did think at one stage that the price of the trip was almost entirely justified just by the food alone. Everything is presented beautifully but not pretentiously. The rooms are similarly unpretentious but beautiful - simply done but perfectly positioned to take in the sweeping views of the river. We stayed in Bungalow 14 which had an amazing totally unobstructed view. Other facilities include a billiards room, multiple places to lounge and acres of space to explore - often best done with glass of wine in hand. The boathouse was a favourite of ours - we sat for a few hours (again with glasses of wine). The included boat tour up the river is made even better by sparkling wine and oysters served precariously but perfectly and just the right amount of commentary makes you feel more like you’re on a boat trip with friends than on a river tour. Marramarra ultimately just gets it right - it doesn’t need the bling of a city hotel or the status of a One and Only name to be luxurious, relaxing, recharging and thoroughly enjoyable experience. My advice would be to stay here as soon as you can before the borders open up and you have to compete with the rest of the world to be one of the only 28 guests who have the pleasure of staying here at a time!
