My wife and i stayed at the Omakau Commercial Hotel on the first night of cycling the Otago Rail trail.
The hotel has been largely renovated but still has that wonderful old style charm. Our room was lovely and comfortable and although we had to share toilets and bathroom this was really not an issue.
The service was great and Matt the barman mixed the best lemon, lime and bitters i've ever had- just perfect at the end of a days cycling.
We had a meal at the hotel in the evening. the dining room was packed as indeed was the bar area- a very popular place for locals as well as cyclists. The meal of fish and chips was fine but the portions were too large and the fish a little overcooked-we were able to give this feedback to the owner next morning who took it most constructively.
A good continental breakfast was included in the tariff and all in all, i wouldn't hesitate to stay here again in future.

Our Biking Group of 21 riding the Central Otago Rail Trail had a great time with our super Hosts Eugene and Sharyn, nothing was a problem. Fabulous food, loved the character of the old Hotel. Lovely touches with Dressing Gowns, towels and face clothes neatly rolled up with a mint on top. Super warm comfy beds and hot showers. Everything very clean. We will be back, had a great time.

Ever so friendly to it seems every cyclist that passes through there.
The meal and drinks were very well priced and of course the Blue Cod was excellent, South Island delicacy.

Sometimes it feels as though just passing through for one night doesn’t seem enough though it does drive the desire to return.

I won’t go into the details of the entire night as I feel it was discussed enough.
But the food, I had been looking forward to ordering off the smoked menu since it was emailed out, I do love some slow cooked smoked meat. To the point I have my own smoker and make my own craft beer.
Well what a massive disappointment, the meat while it was tender, was drier than the cardboard box it was served in, it was like it have been cooked days ago, stored in the fridge, reheated and then served. This was the general rule across all those that picked from the smoked menu.
Maybe it was just an off night?
The rooms were nice and to be expected from an old style place, I know I have stayed in a number around the country
Bar staff where great overall
Beer was cold
In-house craft beer certainly not to my taste, needed more flavour, but the guest beers made up for that.
The food really set the tone however
Like I say maybe next time

Booked in for a nights accommodation with friends. Check in was a disorganized affair, seemed to be complete conflict between the management. We were eventually shown to our rooms. What a shocker, we had to sliver side ways along the wall to get into the bed. No tea or coffee making facilities, but the biggest horror was the shared bathrooms. Two toilets and two showers for about 7 rooms. Yes it is a pretty old pub and yes mayb u do expect these inconveniences but
Not at the rates they r charging, way over the top but as they cater to rail trail one nighters they r obviously fleecing tourists. We decided to order dinner from the special smoked slow cooked meats menu, our advice, DONT. We couldn’t eat the meat, it was tough, stringy, over cooked and tasteless, I have had some bad experiences with dining out but this is up with the worse. As we were a relatively large party the consensus was the same with all of us. Appalling. Cannot comment on the other menu. Breakfast was included, basic but edible. The facilities and premises offer unlimited possibilities for excellent hospitality service but unfortunately we felt management need further investigation into running this establishment. As for southern hospitality, a little lacking. We wouldn’t bother going back the experience was too ever lasting.

Thanks for your comments but this needs an extensive fact check. Firstly you didn't book the room but were part of a group that the group lead had already viewed the facilities and knew exactly what each room provided. You arrived late when your group was being hosted and had not spoken with your group lead to determine room allocation and the availability of tea and coffee 24hours to guests. Information regarding the menu options were distributed by the group lead prior to guests arriving. A smoke menu and main menu were offered to all (an arrangement which is not normally on offer). You were asked to leave the Tap Room an hour after our normal closing where you continued to be abusive to staff and management throughout the evening. Your comments and behaviour were unwelcome and offensive. Your group lead apologised for your behaviour which was appreciated given the effort of the staff to host you. The extra lengths taken by staff included transport to and from the hotel for group members, adapting the agreed schedule to cater for late arrivals and the provision of an additional late supper. Management and staff work hard to deliver on their host responsibilities, regardless of the behaviour of guests. Eugene

We dined in the Omakau 14 January 2021 the service was unorganised.
No one showed us to our table at the booked time. The wine sat on the bar for 20 minutes before delivery. The meals Ribeye was COLD. The garlic butter didn't melt during the dining experience. The chips under were cold. When we commented on the meals, no acknowledgement was made.
The menu was limited. No fresh salads available.
Would not recommend the Dining at all.

Thanks for your feedback. Although we work to provide everyone a great dinning experience, we have not in this case. We will work out why the service you received was substandard. Again thanks for your feedback.

A great big Thank You to the wonderful owners and staff of the Omakau Commercial Hotel !
A large group can often be difficult to cater for, but not here, everyone went the extra mile for us, even when we were running late.
The food really satisfied a cold and hungry cast and crew, it came quickly, was delicious and the desserts were amazing.
The character accommodation was super warm, sparkling clean and quiet . The warm pub bar is obviously very popular with the locals, a great sign, this might have something to do with the extra friendly staff. Eugene and Sharyn have amazing plans for the future and we all wish them the very best.

We stayed here two years ago whilst doing the ORT so looked forward to our latest visit. Sorry to say that it wasn't as good as last time. I suspect that that has much to do with getting trained staff as when we booked in a rather apologetic young guy said it was only his second day and really didn't know what he had to do.
So we showed ourselves up to our room after first sorting out which room had been allocated to us.
It was actually a much nicer room than last time as it had an en suite.
Our meal though was not that great. The fish and chips were not a patch on similar meals we'd had in other areas of Otago and my spare ribs were quite ordinary. Again the staff were very young with one young lass unable to take alcohol orders because she was underage.I guess this must be a real issue with hospitality places throughout the country.
Would we stay here again? Yes, i think we would as i feel that country establishments like this need to be supported and i know from past experience, that they CAN do better with the food.

I was part of a film crew who were recently hosted by the Omakau commercial hotel and was completely blown away. I although my accomodation was elsewhere all our meals were here. The food was fantastic but the customer service was next level. Every staff member I encountered was warm, friendly and helpful, whether it was a stupid early morning or later in the evening. They all went over and above to accommodate our group and I cannot sing their praises enough. I will definitely be back and this time I will be staying with you guys!

We stayed at Omakau Hotel our first night of the Otago Rail Trail in June 2020. A cold time of year! We were wet, cold and cranky after a long (?) day in the rain and we arrived to warm, welcoming and fabulous hospitality! Bike shed for the bikes, a tour around after checking in and our lovely room (Room 9) was already warm (radiators and heaters). A nice quick meal at the bar (amazing fireplace!) a great bed, super clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was included, nice bar areas inside and out. Thanks for keeping us warm during our adventure!
