2023 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
Hawley House (c.1878) offers heritage accommodation in a spectacular seaside location overlooking sandy beaches, set amongst 400 acres of gardens and wildlife sanctuary. Hawley unashamedly embraces the patina created by her 150 year history, and the idiosyncrasies of being a family home. Guest rooms feature original artworks and antique furnishings. Centrally located and easily accessible to Devonport, Launceston and Cradle Mountain. We are pet friendly (on request) and serve fantastic evening meals by arrangement.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had three delightful days at Hawley House. Lovely walks in the extensive gardens, or to the dog-friendly beach, our labradoodle interacting with the resident dogs, who treated her like canine royalty. Delicious breakfasts, comfortable rooms, friendly and helpful staff. We couldn't have been happier. Will definitely stay at Hawley House again.

The most beautiful sisters who welcomed us and looked after our every need. The rooms throughout the house were stunning and the food was some of the best I’ve ever eaten. Highly recommend staying here if you enjoy the quiet countryside. Just perfect!

We had a wonderful (albeit short) stay in this historic home. The huge master bedroom not only had more space than any other bedroom we've stayed at but also has this glorious view from the bed - closer if you go onto the balcony. Sophie's welcome was very friendly as were the 3 dogs - Rogue in particular wanted & appreciated lots of attention. Pre-dinner drinks in the amazing drawing room was a great start to the beautiful dinner in the ornate, furnished-in-style dining room. We only had time for a brief look at the library and the room containing much historic detail. The bedroom proved very comfortable, providing us with a restful night. In the morning, back to the dining room for a very nice breakfast. For walks, we only had time for the 45 minute return trail - there's a chance to see penguins at the right time of year - I think I saw just one. We really needed a longer stay to appreciate this unique and lovely home and the many available walks. Love to return.

Spent a night here after heavy rain swamped my second night at Cradle Mountain. This Inn has a lovely location- was greeted by marsupials on arrival, unique for a foreigner. Loved it. Inn is directly across from Hawley beach for a morning stroll. Very helpful owner in recommending an absolutely stunning hike in the nearby national park (Baker’s hike?) and locations on drive back to Launceston. That hike made up for my dreadfully soggy hikes at Cradle mountain! Gorgeous views of the ocean! Excellent homemade bread at breakfast, too.

Fabulous location and property. The owners sophie and Chloe are such great hosts as are their staff. We wanted for nothing. The house is traditional, full of character and the grounds are stunning. The homemade brekkie is delicious with home made bread and jams as well as cereals and fruit. We wanted for absolutely nothing. Thank you both.

I keep coming back to Hawley House. This time with friends for birthday celebrations delayed by covid.. we walked and swam and enjoyed everything Hawley house has to offer including the wonderful dinners. We also enjoyed the local wildlife and saw pademelons. Penguins, sea eagles and the cute welcome swallows . It is lovely to stay somewhere with so much character and atmosphere - such a welcome change from the ubiquitous hotel chains . I’ll be back !

This will be our highlight of our trip in Tasmania, it’s a step back in time that’s very rare these days, the house and grounds are amazing and the history of this property so interesting, the included breakfast was terrific and the dining room setting was from another era, you have to experience this wonderful part of Tasmania’s fascinating history, 10 out 10

Run down and infested with swallows throughout the accommodation. The Stables, our accommodation, had a nest of swallows in the ceiling which left their marks all over the stairwell. The owners said they had tried to remove them, but obviously not tried enough. The gardens are run down, and overgrown, ponds full of algae bloom, or completely empty and have no oxygen hydration. The room was overcrowded with furniture, furnishings, and very cluttered. Windows had on one insect screen, but it was too small to fit the window space. A very poor job of electrical wiring with no spare power points that could used to charge phones etc, all power points were singles only and already taken up with lights or TV/refrigerator and the lighting although plentiful, did not provide ample light for reading. Breakfast was simple, No Dinner was offered, even though the web site says different and the actual address is incorrect, especially since there is no mobile connection in the area, little effort has been taken to rectify this issue with Google maps. All in all, a poor rating is well deserved.

Dear Peter, We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed, however it appears from a cursory glance at your previous reviews on TA that you are perpetually dissatisfied, which is very unfortunate. It is a shame that you did not choose to mention any of your many issues while you were in residence that would have given us a chance to make an attempt to appease you. On this occasion it seems that a major gripe was the singular nest above the staircase (not in your room!) of cute Welcome Swallows which are native to Tasmania and protected (it is illegal to remove nesting birds, and poisoning them or whatever other method you envisage is contrary to our principles anyway). One nest is not an 'infestation' - a tad dramatic! It has been removed now as the babies have flown the coop. The room you stayed in has 8 power points at least and a power board near the bed. If you needed a second power board we would have happily provided one upon a simple request. The room is very spacious and not cluttered, but this is obviously a matter for personal preference. It is presented exactly like the photos online, so if it wasn't furnished to your liking maybe that would have been a prudent moment to choose to book something more suited to your tastes elsewhere. Dinner is available by arrangement, we are a small establishment and there are plenty of options in the area to choose from. If no-one has requested dinner with sufficient advance notice we do not offer dinner, as was the case for your last minute midweek booking. In this instance was a fortunate outcome on both sides, as it seems highly unlikely that you would have enjoyed anything about our dining experience based on your diatribe. We do have mobile phone reception and we do have the correct address on Google and are clearly marked with signs also. If you are with a secondary/cheap provider outside major cities you will have issues in regional Australia everywhere. Hawley Beach is a very small town, we are located on the beach Esplanade which is a dead end so it is truly impossible not to find us. Hopefully you are able to find the perfect place to stay which meets all your needs and expectations more adequately than we managed in one of your future jaunts - wishing you luck and happy travels!

Soft green grass, lily ponds with frogs croaking, friendly dogs roaming, open beaches and both garden and sea views made Hawley House a relaxing and beautiful location for our stay. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable and we enjoyed the included breakfast of cereals, fruit, yoghurt and tasty home-made bread. It was also great to be able to read about the history of the house and see photos of its' changes over 100+ years.
