This was my third visit to Rara Avis, I had visited twice before in the mid-nineties when it was in its hay day. I wanted to share this unique experience with my 16 year old daughter. It is what eco-tourism is supposed to be. You leave the modern world behind and fully immerse yourself in nature. There are no frills,...

I stayed at this hotel and the place is really nice, but the room seems to be old, with broken things and a shower that didn´t work ok. The restaurant is beautiful but like many other places in Costa Rica, the prices are high for small portions.

Do you want relaxation? Easy wildlife viewing? Gourmet food and drink? Various on-site activities? Don't bother. Do you want an adventure (getting there and back, and whilst there)? Plenty of access to a guide (included and likely to have lots of time for you due to what appear to be relatively low visitor numbers)? Does the idea of good "home...

The best part of our experience was getting there by horseback from the regional bus stop and followed by a 2+hour guided walk to the Reserve and Lodge. The Lodge appeared not to be attended to for quite some time. We were there for 4 days and shared 3 with high school kids from Forman School in Connecticut who have...

We stayed at Rara Avis in November 2015 quite near the start of our 23 day holiday but if we knew what was to follow we would have not even considered staying here! We didn't see much wildlife or bird activity as we did later on in other places. There is no point in re-writing lmr005's account as we agree...

It really feels good to be far away from the stress of traffic and schedule. This unique lodge offers an experience no other does. When we arrived at Rara avis, we could truly enjoy all the wonders of the jungle, without the worries. The highly skilled staff gently guided us through pristine primary forest, food was great, guided tours were...

A wonderful experience with some caveats. The horseback ride in is pretty intense for people like me who aren't experienced on horses. The rest of the way in hiking was pretty and interesting. The guides are knowledgeable and will have you take the hikes you are capable of. I'm amazed at the wonderful food the staff can produce so far...

We stayed at Rara Avis in May 2015 and I'm afraid I have to echo some of Ellen's concerns voiced in Sept 2014. The staff we spent time with on site was *wonderful*, and I have no complaints about them whatsoever. But the site has sadly faded from the apparent glory it once had - and visitor numbers have dropped...

We stayed at Rara Avis for four days (beginning of May) and we came by horseback riding. The trip from Horquetas to Rara Avis is a real adventure. The horses are very capable and the guide is friendly & helpfull. The last kilometers you have to walk, but that's not a pitty because the track takes you through beautiful rainforest....

Packed on a farmhouse cart pulled by a tractor that may have won rewards at the First All-Russian Agricultural and Domestic Industries Exhibition in 1923, our group was heading from Horquetas to Rara Avis under a somewhat lazy sun; a ride so bumpy that it could very well have been sponsored by the Costa Rican Physical Therapist Society. But man,...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Rara Avis introduced the concept of ecotourism as a conservation tool to the region in 1983, in which nature-based tourism is now the second largest industry. We preserve 12km2 and 20km of trails, we guarantee you the most authentique and unique experience on Costa Rica rainforest. The lodge is designed to maintain the feeling of being deep and isolated in the forest, while offering basic but comfortable rooms and excellent traditional food. We maintain the sense of the real Costa Rica of many years ago, while offering daily guided walks in which our resident guides explain how the rainforest works. In good weather it is possible to swim at the base of our pristine waterfalls. Other guests simply prefer relax in hammocks on the private balconies of their rooms. This a place for serious naturalists and those who like to have a learning experience on the rainforest. ... more   less
