Detailed Reviews
The Kambah Inn is a pub located in a tired-looking shopping centre in Kambah just up from Tuggeranong back towards Canberra City.
The pub has been around for years and used to be the Kambah Tavern
It doesn’t have food on after 3pm relying on the Chinese restaurant behind it or the café, when it’s open, in the shopping area.
The shopping block has a tired-looking Woolworths for groceries, a very good pie/pastry shop that makes its own on the premises (they make & sell a ‘mongrel’ pie being a pie/quiche type combination), a well-stocked newsagency, a GP and others, and a servo across the parking lots, all doing good trade from the locals. The entire area though needs to be renovated, but it’s ok..
The locals are friendly. I never did try out the pub and not because I beware of pubs that you can’t see into but because I never got around to it. If they had food on, I’d have been in there but because they didn’t I never got around to going in.
The rooms are quiet, cheap, clean, comfortable and with a decent bathroom. They come with TV, kettle, aircon, small fridge, microwave and cutlery & some crockery.
They have ample power-points that are easily accessible although oddly enough only two by the bed (one reason to travel with an adapter).
The rooms are built into the roof so lack windows relying instead on skylights for external light. The overhead light is depressing so I used the light from the study annex (itself large enough to take all the gear I was travelling with) and an odd table lamp with a clip-on fitting that had no where to clip on to – but that’s being picky, it worked.
There’s no off-street parking but the centre has ample un-metered parking with some of it covered by CCTV.
What’s missing are the small things which would make a big difference – some way of getting clean crockery & crockery after using them as relying on the bathroom sink to wash plates & bowls is a bit ordinary, an exhaust fan in the bathroom would be civilised, a weekly vacuum would be good and access to a laundry essential, either in-house or local. At the time of writing this I still have no idea how to get my gear washed.
If the small things were sorted out and if you can handle the lack of windows, its public parking, lack of a laundry and its distance from Canberra (by local standards 12km or so is a fair trip) the price makes it attractive.
