At 1000m elevation on the caribbean slope in between Braulio Carrillo and Poas Volcano (borders a conservation area that is next to Braulio Carrillo) Albergue El Socorro has fantastic birding especially mixed tanager flocks--the most flocks we've seen and 11 tanager species in three hours plus MANY others (not to mention great place for red-headed barbet.) Huge variety of insects...

Head North from San Jose and after stopping (or drive on past) the touristy La Paz Waterfall Park, you can join José and his wife for a truly unique Costa Rican experience. Finding the place is part of the adventure! Trust your GPS. The cottages sleep up to four people comfortably and they are cozy and well appointed. Sitting on...

LOVED and can't say enough about how magical our stay here was. IF you like adventure, hiking, cultural/language immersion, this is similar to a homestay but you have your own space as much as you desire. The experience with the family and the beautiful private property is what sets this place apart. I was skeptical and only booked three nights...

I got attracted to this place by excellent reviews from TripAdvisor, and I was not disappointed. This is a perfect location for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Plan a stay of at least 3 nights to relax and have enough time to do everything the owner is proposing you. I stayed for 3 nights - 4 days with my son to...

Planning our Costa Rica vacation, our original plan was to drive from Manzanillo to Arenal, but that was about 6 hours and so we were looking for a place in between, and so to our great fortune we found this place. Oddly, trip advisor and booking.com both said that no cabins were available for the dates we wanted, but we...

If you want an authentic, quiet, rural experience in Costa Rica, this family farm/preserve is the answer. We ventured to this off-the-tourist circuit location for a unique birding experience. Albergue El Socorro is part of the Costa Rica Bird Route (birding trail website featuring 12 ecotourism sites) in the San Juan-La Selva Biological Corridor. Spectacular drive to the property through...

I really don't know where to start or what to say different than everyone else....my son and I thoroughly enjoyed a 4 day stay here and could have stayed for weeks! The property is paradise.... Every turn of your head offers another glorious view! There are several trails that lead to secret, private waterfalls that you can swim in.... More...

Excellent hosts (kind, helpfull, great cookers, know everything about nature and share trips and waterfalls with you, and even their farming activities). Difficult to find if you don't have a map, wifi bad there, but the rest is excellent ! (rooms, cleaning, food, nature, people etc). I hardly recommand. Thanks to José and his great wife.

This is what people think they are coming to Costa Rica for if they want an authentic natural experience. Too often they are hustled to a commercialized tourist destination. The farm experience and trails are what you should come here for. Jose and his family work hard to make your stay comfortable and an authentic Tico experience. We chose one...

We had a warm welcome by the lovely family who owns the farm. We saw some cows, horses, goats and dogs, and chickens.. The cabins are basic but so charming, private and very clean. Together with a member of the family, we made some walking tours in the secondary forest and we had a swim in the river. The food...
