Driving up the track to the Wallawwa feels like entering another world (and time): you escape the busy drive you've just taken up from the airport, and emerge into a jungle, but a beautifully kept one.

We were offered afternoon tea as we arrived, and had it on the veranda, overlooking the lawn and feeling like we'd stepped into an old historical world, which given the age of the building, we kind of had. The room was light and airy, not overly fussy, but with a really comfortable bed; my favourite part was the large wet room/shower. Not that we spent much time in the room, as it all centred around the veranda (a great spot for a pre dinner gin and tonic) and the pool, which felt quite private being a little way away from the main house. It was a nice touch that the staff brought drinks up there if you asked.

It's not somewhere I'd stay for a week (the rest of Sri Lanka is too good to miss) but it doesn't feel like it's meant to be: rather it's a peaceful place to rest and regroup for a couple of nights after coming up from the airport, or chilling out for a night or two before you head back to your flight and reality. Dinner and breakfast were in a covered area outside and the fruit for breakfast was delicious, as was the Sri Lankan curry. A lovely place to relax.

Everything about the Wallawwa is just right- and everything that other reviewers have said is right too!

This is an exceptional boutique hotel, in a most surprising oasis of calm. Set in magnificent gardens, with a pool surrounded by towering trees for sunshine and shade, it’s a superb location.

We enjoyed it so much in 2019 that we came back this year to find all the same qualities we remembered- great staff, delicious cuisine (rice and curry quite the best), lovely rooms with private garden, and a shower room of extravagant proportions. I just hope that the Wallawwa manages to survive the present crisis, so that we can be there again in 2021.

How couldn’t you give it five stars - it’s all right!

The Wallawwa is a wonderful property to escape the noisy city just a short distance from Colombo (about 45 min drive).

I like the attention to detail, for example, the whole property has smooth floors in the main house but the stairs and the pool area have rough surfaces which is the attention to detail that I feel a lot of properties are missing in Sri Lanka. The staff is intuitive and well trained. The Resident Manager is always around, making sure everything is up to standard and extremely proactive. My only con is that the quality of food does not align with their pricing, but it was good.

NOTE: I stayed at this property while they were running a special which is why I gave a 5/5 for "value" if the room was USD 200,- and above the rating would be lower. USD 200 + would be too expensive if you consider everything.

Tip: Bring strong mosquito repellent, because of the amazing greenery there are a lot of mosquitos throughout your stay.

We purchased a Sri Lankan custom tour package from A and K and were promised and excellent trip...Well it wasn’t as advertised to say the least. We have travelled using A and K multiple global packages and they definitely are no longer the premium tour operator that they were yet their prices are still 5 star.
We spoke at length about our considerations and desires for this trip and were promised that this was an excellent boutique hotel just outside Columbo, Sri Lanka. Realistically it is in the boonies off a dirty two lane highway that is extremely crowded and down a dirt road...Not what we expected.
It is an old colonial style house that is well maintained if not luxurious. We were not happy with the delux room we paid for , so paid extra to upgrade to the largest most delux suite. It was very spacious, but not luxurious, yet did have a private plunge pool. We had travelled for more than 12 hours to get here and once we had showered and changed , went to their restaurant for dinner. The food quality was not even mediocre. If you ate Sri Lankan food it was mediocre, if not it was less than acceptable. We tried to book massages after the long flights over many times zones, but they had only one masseuse available and would not call in additional staff, so the spa was a joke. The staff were all very nice, but poorly trained.
Although we had rudimentary international cable and A/C the room also came with lizards and spiders sprawling up the walls. The large trees and grounds were beautiful, but we were warned that poisonous / deadly snakes were in the region , thus we stayed away from walking amount the trees or the swimming pool. We would not recommend the property.

Response from Mustafa Adamaly, General Manager at Wallawwa
Responded 7 Apr 2020
Dear Christopher, We have conducted a thorough review of your stay with us and genuinely feel you may have misunderstood what it is that we offer at The Wallawwa. We do not promise to be a five star hotel. We take great pride in the boutique character and peaceful ambiance of the Wallawwa and understand from reading your other reviews that our style of property simply doesn’t suit you. We are not, and neither do we claim to be, anything like the Four Seasons Hotel Group that you clearly enjoy. The Wallawwa is an 18th century manor house that was transformed to an 18-bedroom luxury boutique hotel just over 10 years ago, preserving the colonial style and atmosphere of the 200 year old building. As you can see from other past reviews, we have been praised many times for having a unique style and character as well as friendly, efficient staff and delicious food, both Sri Lankan and International. We are unsure how you can state that our non-Sri Lankan food was “not even mediocre”, as you both ordered Sri Lankan food (Ceylon Spiced Prawns and Chicken Curry) for your dinner. If you could provide us with some specific feedback, that would be very helpful. With regards to the spa, one of our Spa Therapists was on duty all day and only carried out two other treatments, so there was plenty of time for you to book your treatments had you requested. Unfortunately, the second therapist was on leave on the day of your stay, so a twin treatment wouldn’t have been possible. We’re sorry you felt like the road was dirty and crowded, but that does not have anything to do with the hotel. It is the same road that is used to get to our international airport just 15 minutes away, and one of the reasons we are acclaimed for our fantastic location. Finally, we’re not sure who had warned you about the snakes ‘in the region’, but Sri Lanka is known for its rich biodiversity and is something we are proud of. There are snakes found all over Sri Lanka, however the majority of them are non-venomous and are rarely seen. In over 10 years of operating hotels in Sri Lanka we have never (fortunately) had a problem with the local wildlife that shares their habitat with us. We’re sorry that it stopped you from swimming in the pool or walking around the property, but had you spoken to a member of staff, they would have most certainly accompanied you around our beautiful tropical garden. We do appreciate constructive criticism and our team are always open to suggestions and feedback. However, rather than just posting a poor review online, we’d recommend that you raise any concerns you have whilst you’re at a hotel, so the team can do their best to put your mind at rest on the spot. Best regards, The Wallawwa

Just a stones throw from Colombo airport in kilometres but a world away in reality is this oasis of a hotel. People use this as a transit hotel but it is so much more than that. Set in acres of tropical gardens the rooms are spacious and restful with a delightful restaurant and beautiful swimming pool. Run by the stylish TearDrop brand the Wallawwa does not disappoint. Take a tour of the kitchen garden, pick some fruit and meet the goats. Chat to the accomplished chef across the open door to try to discover some secrets or just relax and let the staff pamper you.
We ended up here by accident but would stay again in a heartbeat. Service was faultless and our only sadness was how unnecessarily empty this hotel is at the moment and how much hardship that means for those whose livelihood relies on room occupation.

It was a good stay! The food was excellent and srilankan rice and curry was one of the best we ever had. Well trained staff with great attitude. Asanka was a staff member who was particularly helpful, accommodating and shared his knowledge about entire location and facilities with us. It was nice to see many vegetables from their own vegetable garden. Kids enjoyed their hospitality. Simple very nicely done and managed place. very good value for money.

Only 10-15 mins drive from airport so staying here before and/or after your flight is a no brainer, providing an ideal opportunity to acclimatise and recharge batteries.

Beautiful grounds and public areas, well stocked bar and varied menus of good food at reasonable cost. Rooms although not luxurious have all amenities needed for a stop over and most have a private sitting out area.

Staff will go out of their way to help, arrange transfers etc Must try the Spa next time, which has been extended since our last visit as has the reception area.

The hotel, part of the excellent Teardrop Group, is situated away from the busy main road, entered down a lushly planted drive way. It is a old colonial home and now a lovely boutique hotel set in beautiful grounds with a pool and only about 40 minutes from the airport and an hour from Colombo. It is ideally situated before heading off North West to the cultural sites. Our room was large , airy and light with a very comfortable bed and well planned washroom with excellent shower. Food was high quality and delicious from an a la carte menu. They use vegetables grown in their own garden which you can visit. The staff very attentive and professional under an excellent manager. Highly recommended as your first stop but you may wish to linger longer!

This was our first stop in a 17 day trip to Sri Lanka. A fabulous place to stay, albeit for 1 night. Very tropical gardens, which could have been in Bali, with a colonial style building. We enjoyed our stay in a good garden suite room. No problems. Many birds in the gardens and we even saw a paradise flycatcher, with a long white tail. We had an evening meal in the restaurant which was well prepared, but rather expensive compared with restaurants in other hotels we stayed at. A splendid first night. I have been visiting SL for 20 years and now have a house there. So I don't often stay in hotels any more. But on my last trip I decide to have a day in Colombo before I returned to the UK. I then stayed at the Wallawwa that night before flying the next morning. It's a 15 minute ride from the airport so means you can avoid the traffic in Colombo.

I have stayed before, and loved it, so was happy to return and see that it's still such an atmospheric hotel. It certainly doesn't feel like an 'airport' hotel - it's a beautiful old house, set in lovely gardens with a great pool. The rooms are large, with huge bathrooms, and mine had seating area outside where I enjoyed my morning coffee.

The restaurant is great, so pretty sitting by the garden, enjoying delicious food. I'd happily visit for dinner even if I wasn't flying! And I enjoyed my SL breakfast of hoppers and chicken curry one last time.

The staff were attentive and friendly. I was particularly impressed by the emphasis on sustainability, and that the staff explained to me what they were doing to be more sustainable - using natural materials not plastic, and recycling everything they can.

It is the perfect place to start your holiday, a nice soft landing with a truly Sri Lankan feel, or to end as I did. I will be back.

If I remember correctly, they were about 30 USD and depending on if crowded you may wish to book in advance. During our visit, we saw perhaps 3 other guests/parties and were able to "walk-into" a massage appointment.

what is the best way to transfer between the Walawwa and the airport?
Answer from Teardrop Hotels

Hi Bryan, we can arrange for a driver to meet you in the arrival's hall of the airport, and bring you to the Wallawwa, if you send your flight arrival details to our reservations team. Alternatively, there are taxi booths in the arrivals hall that you can use. Please do, however, make sure they know exactly where they're going before you set off. It's only a 15-20 minute drive. Warm regards, The Wallawwa
