Very comfortable accommodation in a rural lodge in Arctic Norway. Rooms are small but very clean and warm and they have all accessories you might need such as hairdryer. The shower was hot and powerful, but be aware that shower gel / shampoo is not provided. Hot food (breakfast and dinner) are brought from the main building and served to you at a communal table. There are smaller lodges, but we were part of a group so this may be different. The food was excellent and wine / beer is available to buy.

A warm welcome awaited us, from Trine and team (we made our own way from Kirkenes airport in hire car) - our accommodation was cosy, wonderfully warm and the views across the river (from our bed!) into Russia were stunning! Birk Husky is situated right on the Norwegian/Russian border. One night we ate in the communal long Viking-esque wooden building, long tables either side of the amazing open fire-pit down the middle - the most amazing king crab soup and rich reindeer stew, with wine, made for a perfect evening. We didn't have time to experience a trip on a dog sleigh, snow was melting rapidly - we were there for the wildlife, especially birds - woke to lekking Black Grouse, displaying Goldeneye (nestboxes in the surrounding woodland), Pine Grosbeaks coming to Trine's bird feeders and Siberian Tits inspecting nestboxes right outside our delightful cabin all added to the atmosphere. Breakfast was substantial and filling, just what was needed for a long day out exploring either on foot or by car. The tales of the husky sled rides in winter sounded amazing but spring was equally fulfilling - just go!

Loved this place and the people, but mostly loved the dogs ( including Barrack - see pic).

The guest house was cozy and warm. The breakfast was a smorgasbord and nicely presented.

We went on a nighttime husky run and saw a glimmer of the Northern lights. The dogs were eager to run, but responsive to novice mushers. The daytime husky tour was scenic and included a beautiful sunset (albeit at 2pm). Can't praise the staff enough. They were knowledgeable, friendly and great with the dogs, each of whom they knew by name and nature. Dinner and lunch after each run was warm and nourishing.

This was the highlight of our holiday!

God jul to the staff and those lucky enough to do the overnight tour next week.

We spent two nights at this magical location at the end of a four week holiday. All of the staff were wonderful, as were the dogs, each with its own personality. The dog-sledding was one of te best experiences we've ever had, and the wild enthusiasm of the dogs to go running is incredible. Beautiful and quiet location. Accommodation clean, comfortable and warm even in -14 temperature. Every one of the staff was enthusiastic and keen to make our experience there as good as possible. They succeeded!

Spent two nights here before heading south to Finland, and it was one of the loveliest places on our trip. The house is clean and bright, with nice decorations and a family atmosphere. Julie and Elley made us very welcome, and couldn't have been any more helpful. It was a treat to eat dinner in the longhouse on our first night, and they were even able to provide a vegetarian pasta dish for me, which was just what i needed after a long hungry day traveling through Finnmark. A big highlight of our stay was getting to meet the huskies, who were adorable and all very friendly. The view across the river to Russia is very beautiful, and whole Pasvik valley seems peaceful and full of wildlife. While we were there we saw red squirrels, bullfinches and siskins. Two nights was really not enough and we'd love to go back sooner rather than later!

We stayed here after our BIRK Husky experience. Great local food and very cozy downstairs (and upstairs after a while - 'fire heater' quite slow).

The pick-up and drop off in Kirkenes provided by BIRK essential as quite a way out of town. Would also be great in the Summer!

Birk Husky is a place that everyone needs to see and experience. I am recommending this place to everyone I know! The staff is friendly, considerate, helpful and easy to talk to.

The accomadation lies beautifully located along the Russian river-border with great views and possibility for a swim/dip in the river in between rounds in the sauna.

The dog sled tours is the main highlight and is like an experience you've never had before. The noise from the very friendly dogs, eager to go out running, suddenly dissapearing as you release the breaks on the sled. And then you travel out into the winter wonderland that is Pasvik. If you are lucky enough you can watch the northern lights while you ride the dog sled through the snow covered forests.

The food is also very good, especially the King crab soup👌

If you're considering which place to choose for an experience like this, I'd recommend you go for Birk Husky😊

During June 2019, I visited the Pasvik Valley in Finnmark, a popular birding region bordering Norway, Russia and Finland. I stayed at two beautiful wilderness cottages owned by Birk Husky, an ideal base for bird watching in Pasvik.

To reach the cottages you travel on the scenic little Highway 885 along the beautiful Pasvik River (dividing Norway and Russia). Across the river you can see Murmansk and its astounding wilderness.

My 1st stay was at their cottage called Sortbrysttjernkoia near Vaggetem, 55 km from BIRK base. It is located deep inside a forest with lakes around it, in absolutely beautiful surroundings. In summers the area is teeming with bird life and the moment you step out of the cottage, you can hear birds chirping everywhere. A very serene and soothing atmosphere. You can also see many bird watchers roaming around with cameras. This remote cottage is fully equipped with a sauna, kitchen, gas stove, and wood fired stove.

The 2nd cottage, called Myrbekkoia is located much closer to BIRK base, near Melkefoss. This cottage, also used in winter for their dog sledding tours, is larger and can accommodate more people. The scenery around here is quite different from their other cottage as there are no lakes here, just the forest. But deep in the forest here, you get that super exciting feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, just lost in nature. There are no bird watchers here. There is an exciting stream flowing near the cottage.

This 2nd cottage also has a lovely bird feeder attracting lots of birds. BIRK has a nice large illustration chart affixed showing birds of the area. This cottage is also more centrally located in Pasvik to reach most birding spots.

Both cottages have a nice stock of children's books and games. And lots of candles for candle lit dinners.

Being my 1st time in the arctic, I experienced this magical midnight sun and also a night of snowing in June, although during many days the temperature was super nice, like 20C. This was also the best time as there were not many mosquitoes around.

If you want to photograph the birds, you must have a zoom camera with tripods because the birds are quite shy. Although Birk Husky’s has a bird feeder at one of their cottages and it is easy to take pictures from inside the window. They also have a large chart of bird descriptions.

The host lady was really very nice and helpful. As I was coming from a faraway country, she patiently answered more than 30 emails over a time of one month before my arrival during which she provided me with lots of guidance about the cabins, the region, and also a lot of useful info on what type of birds to see and all the spots.

She also gave me excellent advice, like to get a rental car for bird watching in the region. I was initially planning a bike which was not feasible. The rental cost was surprisingly low. I got a Toyota Yaris Hybrid from Kirkenes airport for just Euro 325 for 11 days.

Birk Husky is also superb with the local cuisine. I only tried the moose burgers and cloudberry dessert. But do try all the other items, including the famous King Crab soup!

All in all, this was a nice and memorable trip for me in the enchanting surroundings of the arctic.

We did 2 dog sled experiences in Norway and saw 3 kennels. This was a superior experience. First, they really take great care of the dogs. The dog yard is not full of poop (like another one we saw in Tromso). The dogs are excited and friendly. What made this experience different was they taught you to harness your dogs! We retrieved every dog on our team (with lots of help and supervision) and attached them together and mushed ourselves and did a night trip. It was an amazing experience! Wish I had done a day trip with them as well. My kids (ages 11 and 13 loved it too). The food was also very good.

My only feedback : I wish they had started the trip an hour earlier - we would have gotten better pictures and it would have been fabulous to see dusk and sunset from the sled. We didn’t get a lot of pictures at night and people want to take pictures. My second caveat is that the rooms are European hostel style - shared bathrooms, etc. That is fine but but we had a small light in our room and the heat was iffy. I think if they can make some minor changes in the accommodations I would give them a 5 star review.

But as dog sledding goes, do not miss an opportunity to do a trip with Birk.

Hi Thank you for your visit and your nice review! We do run one day tour and one evening tour, and since we are one-hour drive from Kirkenes we need to be efficient regarding transfer, both cost vise but also thinking environment. Our transfer service bringing our guests back to Kirkenes after the day tour, brings up the guests for the evening tour. With a maximum of 8 guests on each tour it is important to think sustainable in every way. The light change a lot during the season from being a tour in the dark with good possibilities of northern lights in December to more or less all light in late April. Unfortunately, we cannot change the time of the tour from month to month but do hope our guests enjoy the tour as it is. All lights have its own charm. Our little guesthouse with 7 rooms used to be my aunt's house, so the rooms are quite small, but are very representative to a normal Norwegian home. I am sorry if you felt that it was too little light in the room or the room was to cold. We will of course strive to fix this! Thank you again, and welcome back to BIRK any time! Best regards Trine

Hi, the dogs are not located right outside the guesthouse, but if you sleep with the windows open you might hear them. However our kennel is not very noisy- we let them bark when we feed and when we go out on tour with them. Outside that we try to keep them quiet. Welcome to BIRK husky
