The guest house was cozy and warm. The breakfast was a smorgasbord and nicely presented.
We went on a nighttime husky run and saw a glimmer of the Northern lights. The dogs were eager to run, but responsive to novice mushers. The daytime husky tour was scenic and included a beautiful sunset (albeit at 2pm). Can't praise the staff enough. They were knowledgeable, friendly and great with the dogs, each of whom they knew by name and nature. Dinner and lunch after each run was warm and nourishing.
This was the highlight of our holiday!
God jul to the staff and those lucky enough to do the overnight tour next week.

The pick-up and drop off in Kirkenes provided by BIRK essential as quite a way out of town. Would also be great in the Summer!

The accomadation lies beautifully located along the Russian river-border with great views and possibility for a swim/dip in the river in between rounds in the sauna.
The dog sled tours is the main highlight and is like an experience you've never had before. The noise from the very friendly dogs, eager to go out running, suddenly dissapearing as you release the breaks on the sled. And then you travel out into the winter wonderland that is Pasvik. If you are lucky enough you can watch the northern lights while you ride the dog sled through the snow covered forests.
The food is also very good, especially the King crab soup👌
If you're considering which place to choose for an experience like this, I'd recommend you go for Birk Husky😊

A stay of two night at Birk Husky . A sample of excellent hospitality. Real Norway taste, excellent staff, good food, confortable and clean. With a wonderful landscape. Unique experience.

To reach the cottages you travel on the scenic little Highway 885 along the beautiful Pasvik River (dividing Norway and Russia). Across the river you can see Murmansk and its astounding wilderness.
My 1st stay was at their cottage called Sortbrysttjernkoia near Vaggetem, 55 km from BIRK base. It is located deep inside a forest with lakes around it, in absolutely beautiful surroundings. In summers the area is teeming with bird life and the moment you step out of the cottage, you can hear birds chirping everywhere. A very serene and soothing atmosphere. You can also see many bird watchers roaming around with cameras. This remote cottage is fully equipped with a sauna, kitchen, gas stove, and wood fired stove.
The 2nd cottage, called Myrbekkoia is located much closer to BIRK base, near Melkefoss. This cottage, also used in winter for their dog sledding tours, is larger and can accommodate more people. The scenery around here is quite different from their other cottage as there are no lakes here, just the forest. But deep in the forest here, you get that super exciting feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, just lost in nature. There are no bird watchers here. There is an exciting stream flowing near the cottage.
This 2nd cottage also has a lovely bird feeder attracting lots of birds. BIRK has a nice large illustration chart affixed showing birds of the area. This cottage is also more centrally located in Pasvik to reach most birding spots.
Both cottages have a nice stock of children's books and games. And lots of candles for candle lit dinners.
Being my 1st time in the arctic, I experienced this magical midnight sun and also a night of snowing in June, although during many days the temperature was super nice, like 20C. This was also the best time as there were not many mosquitoes around.
If you want to photograph the birds, you must have a zoom camera with tripods because the birds are quite shy. Although Birk Husky’s has a bird feeder at one of their cottages and it is easy to take pictures from inside the window. They also have a large chart of bird descriptions.
The host lady was really very nice and helpful. As I was coming from a faraway country, she patiently answered more than 30 emails over a time of one month before my arrival during which she provided me with lots of guidance about the cabins, the region, and also a lot of useful info on what type of birds to see and all the spots.
She also gave me excellent advice, like to get a rental car for bird watching in the region. I was initially planning a bike which was not feasible. The rental cost was surprisingly low. I got a Toyota Yaris Hybrid from Kirkenes airport for just Euro 325 for 11 days.
Birk Husky is also superb with the local cuisine. I only tried the moose burgers and cloudberry dessert. But do try all the other items, including the famous King Crab soup!
All in all, this was a nice and memorable trip for me in the enchanting surroundings of the arctic.

My only feedback : I wish they had started the trip an hour earlier - we would have gotten better pictures and it would have been fabulous to see dusk and sunset from the sled. We didn’t get a lot of pictures at night and people want to take pictures. My second caveat is that the rooms are European hostel style - shared bathrooms, etc. That is fine but but we had a small light in our room and the heat was iffy. I think if they can make some minor changes in the accommodations I would give them a 5 star review.
But as dog sledding goes, do not miss an opportunity to do a trip with Birk.
"For lakes and scenery choose Sortbrysttjernkoia and for that exciting feeling of remoteness choose Myrbekkoia."Read full review
