Upon arrival I’ll admit I was a little skeptical, however it’s been such a nice stay! This is the cheapest hostel in Melbourne and I was expecting the worst, however it’s sad saying goodbye! The location is good, 20 mins walk away from the beachy, more communal areas one way and 20 mins tram from the major city the other. The rooms aren’t anything fancy at all, but not the worst, hang a towel up for some privacy in shared rooms and people are all very respectful and friendly. Nice pub downstairs and a 7/11 right across the road. Only thing is there’s not really a proper common room to meet the other backpackers- a very small kitchen, seating area and lounge room with 2 sofas. But we’ve managed to make friends! Don’t expect the nicest facilities in the world but they’re not the worst at all! Plenty of showers and toilets, laundry and free cereal and toast in the morning. Happy backpacker here 😀

The lady at the desk was wonderful, they staff well but that's about it. Check in time was awful and I kept getting dirty looks and talked rudely to by the bar staff while I waited from 7am all the way to 2pm,as a past hostel worker myself I was disgusted by the cleaning staffs capabilities especially since customers are asked to remove their sheets at the end of their stay! Rooms aren't prioritised and it's a flat out only at 2pm which becomes a huge fuss when everyone wants to check in at the same time. The stairs were narrow and awfully steep to climb and I was expected to carry all 7 of my bags through the pub outside then back in and then up those awful stairs because the front desk closes at 12! I even slipped on the way back down because the first step is smaller and due to damage it's not marked like the others and completely camouflaged, blindly falling to the bottom of the stairs was not fun. You're expected to pay a deposit on keys and I was quoted multiple prices throughought encounters and when I went to pay it was about $50 more than expected cutting back are food budget immensely. By the time you get here it's definitely too late to cancel your booking unless you want to lose your deposit. There is a bar downstairs which is probably their main source of income generated by forcing customers to go in and out through the pub. The room we received is right in front of a set of stairs used by strangers and the blinds installed in front of these stairs were a thin see through sheet of cloth making me feel incredibly uncomfortable getting to sleep. The Window held open by a coat hanger instantly widened our eyes to the cost cutbacks and lack of repair to the building. There is a tiny fan for a twin share which resulted in one comfortable and one boiling hot customer. The fridge was minimal to encourage yet more purchases In the pub as well. DO NOT STAY HERE!

Response from Pintonpunt S, Manager at Pint on Punt

Hi there, Thank you for your review we appreciate all feedback!! Sorry to hear you had problems during your stay here. Unfortuantely as we are the cheapest low budget backpackers in this area we do not expect all guest to be 100% happy with all facilities but we do try our best to make you guys happy. I would like to address some of the points you have made. The Reception opens at 8.15 am. If you arrive early for check in we welcome all people to have some free breakfast and use the wifi until the rooms are ready. Check out time is 10am which gives the cleaners 4 hours to make all the beds. Some mornings more people arrive before 2pm than others and we do try to make everyone comfortable but we do advertise on every site you can book with us through that check in is 2pm which is pretty standard in this area. I am very sorry to hear that you fell on the stairs. We have checked all steps for damage and have been unable to locate the step you fell on. All steps are the exact same size so you could have possibly skipped one by accident as you were carrying all of your bags. The key deposit is $10 and has never been any different so this is something I am trying to investigate at the moment but going through all your payments, as you extended your stay, I can see that you were not overcharged regarding the cost of the rooms at any point. When I recieved your email regarding the blinds in your room I gave you the option to move into a different room but I did not receive any reply. We have already replaced the curtains since your stay and we thank you for the feedback. To conclude regarding cost cutbacks we are the cheapest backpackers in the st kilda area and we do not claim to be a 4* hotel but we do try our best and we do make a lot of our guests happy enough to stay for 4/5 months at a time. We are equally saddened by the outcome of your stay as we do really want everyone to be as comfortable as they can be during their stay. We have taken all points into consideration thank you very much.

Me and my friend booked a dorm room for new years... I lost my bag and didn't have the key to return. Staff were great, nothing was a problem to them. Only downfall was that there was no food during the day and not many places nearby either. Staff made us toasties though!!

The rooms were old and uncomfortable, the rooms smelt all the time and we didn’t see them get cleaned once except when the cleaners came in to empty the bins and spray air freshener? There was nothing to do there activity or amenities wise. The communal kitchen was tiny and seriously outdated. To top it off there was a mouse living under the bed (We’ve met other people who say they’ve seen rats there too). The rooms also look nothing like their picture. We had booked for a week here but could only last 3 days before booking somwhere else. However when we told them we had to leave for the above reasons they refused to give a refund as we booked on booking.com. The receptionist said her manager would call us to discuss it but he never did. The staff were all lovely however but the place was smelly dirty and old and I would never go back. Possibly the worst hostel Iv ever stayed in.

Of all the places I've stayed in Australia, Pint On Punt is the one I've always come back to. Management has always been excellent, cooking and cleaning facilities top notch, the cheap beer and food downstairs has always been welcome, and the vast majority of people I've been staying with here have been nothing short of amazing. If/when I come back to Australia, I'll be sure to give Pint On Punt a visit again

Extremely dirty. No daily cleaning or perhaps even Monthly 🤢
The kitchen smelled bad and was dirty. No acces to cleaning supplies like a wipe or dish brush in the kitchen. Not even paper. I wanted to cook but felt like I couldn’t cause I’d get sick from all the dirt.

Where to start.. we only stayed here one night (fortunately) but we were able to see things.. the showers.. simply disgusting, hair everywhere, the floor let's not talk about it... the insulation , what a disaster.. we could know what people were saying as they passed in the street.. then the room.. I think that today even the prison rooms are cleaner and more pleasant. The price for all this is a shame... absolutely run away, it's not difficult to find better, in fact, I challenge you to find worse.
Ps: positive point (you really need one) the girl who welcomed us was very pleasant.

The pub downstairs is excellent. I would come again. The food was good and the variety of beers was also good.

The hostel itself lived up to the worst of the reviews. It is dirty and unloved. The floor covering (What's left of it) is breaking up and filthy. It's only the dirt holding it together. The bathroom is grim. I am sure the staff do their best to maintain cleanliness in the bathroom, but you can't polish a turd. (Unintended joke).

The duvet covering is worn out and also grim. Again not the fault of the staff, but the owners need a little more investment in the basics. What you get for what you pay just isn't worth it.

Spend a bit more. I wish I had.

Positives: The staff were friendly and live music downstairs was nice! Met some nice people! The hostel was cheaper than the other hostels in the area over Christmas (although still pricey for what it was).

Negatives: The room we stayed in was super uninviting, with dirty carpets I didn’t feel comfortable standing on, a sink that filled up in two seconds and the smell of smoke from people sat smoking at all hours on the emergency exit stairs.
The WiFi was actually nonexistent, could not load anything so ended up using way too much of my 4G.
It says that smoking and drugs are super prohibited but the corridor and our room stank like weed and cigarette smoke every time we came back to the hostel, first thing you smell as soon as you open the door to the rooms by the lobby (so staff are definitely aware but overlook it). People were doing cocaine off the toilet seats. No supervision whatsoever which is fine if people are respectful but that wasn’t the case.
You had to pay a deposit for simple plates and cutlery and the kitchen was basically unusable, the kitchen is stupidly small for the amount of people staying there. Half of the 8 hobs did not work and everything was dirty. The kitchen closes at 10pm. The dark curly haired guy that works around the hostel was super rude to us for no reason on xmas and hates his job (hire someone who is able to communicate with people in an ok manner).
Showers couldn’t decide on whether to be freezing cold or boiling hot.
Overall would not stay here again!

Drinks are more expensive than Melbourne's top casino, CROWN. Rooms are tiny and filthy. Bathrooms and common showers are disgusting. The rooms are ant 🐜 infested. When we walked into the room the bed was visibly dirty. The sidewalk is a better place to sleep than here and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. And a guy just walked into our locked room using a key he was just giving at reception thinking it was vacant
