Hôtel Koh-I Nor by Les Etincelles receives a mixed response from guests. While its prime ski-in/ski-out location is highly appreciated for the convenience it offers, many patrons feel the hotel falls short of its 5-star rating, particularly noting service shortcomings and dining that doesn't meet expectations. The atmospheric bar with live music is a highlight, yet the wellness area attracts criticism for noise and maintenance issues. Room opinions are split, with their spaciousness and comfort being acknowledged, but some guests report problems with cleanliness and temperature control.

The plusses: Lovely hotel with a professional level of service. Very spacious, comfortable rooms with sweeping views over the valley. Nice spa with high quality amenities. Good live music in the lobby bar. Great service in the ski shop. Big heated lockers. Prompt shuttle btw village and hotel. Nice location far away from the noisy village center.

The minusses:
The main restaurant in the lobby (where breakfast is served) does not live up to the hotel’s five star rating, especially at dinner. The food is average and overpriced. The service is chaotic and can be quite disorganized. The portions are small and the food is of nothing special. We were twice overcharged on the bill so be sure to double check the receipt before signing. The spa is nice but doesn’t have enough hooks so it can be tricky to hang your towel/robe and there are no shelves in the showers to place shampoo. All showers should offer a curtain for privacy since they are unisex (it’s not so pleasant to have to look at a someone’s hairy middle aged ass in the shower next to you).

Dear Nomitjp, Thank you for your comment and for your remarks that helps us to improve our services. We would like to explain that the main restaurant l'Atelier d'Eric is the restaurant where is served the half board menu. This menu is included in the price of the half board and offers a 5 courses menu with a large choice of meals and alternatives. See you soon at the Koh-I Nor

A spectacular five star hotel with ski in, ski out facilities, a sensational spa area, gourmet breakfasts and apartment style rooms decored in an alpine theme.
This modern 5 star hotel attracts the fashion set. Think Russians, Americans and people who like a bit of style during their stay.
It’s the highest hotel on the mountain, so has spectacular views from the rooms right across Val Thorens as well as the reception and bar.
The property is about six years old, so still feels fresh and the rooms are spacious and well designed for ski life.
There is a master bedroom with balcony overlooking the views, and a smaller room with two single beds, ideal for a family.
The bathroom has a generous separate bath and large walk in shower and luxurious diamond products from the branded spa.
There is a large entrance to the room with lots of storage for ski clothes and skis.
Although they are stored in a room right next to the ski exit, making life easy and leaving rooms free and spacious.
Staff even empty your car and set up your skis and boots within the ski room upon arrival.
The spa area is exceptional and includes two large pools, a Himalayan salt room, spa, outdoor and indoor dry spa, wet spa and a small but sufficient fitness centre.
The Breakfast buffet is decadent. It is European and includes meats, salmon, cereal, an array of breads to toast or eat fresh, scrambled eggs, and cook your own boiled eggs.
There are juices, baked goods such as gourmet cakes with raspberry and chocolate pieces, natural and flavoured yoghurts and more. And there is even unlimited champagne by the glass.
The bar area is a lovely place for a pre-dinner drink or coffee during the day.
The hotel also has a section with apartments and a hotel branded shuttle moving around the village continually.
A fabulous stress-free place to stay in Val Thorens.
The ski out slopes are rather steep for a beginner, next time I would catch the bus and not attempt them first thing, but for moderate and advanced skiers there is no issue.

We stayed there for 4 nights and had a very enjoyable time. The waiters at Le Diamant Noir are exceptional and the menu is highly value for money given the ambience and quality. We like the furbishment and decors of the hotel a lot especially the spacious environment. It has all the facilities you need to relax and just stay at the hotel if you are not skiing that day. The terrace allows you to enjoy the sun with a great view. The hotel is a further up from the main street but they have free shuttle service to go around so that's indeed a good thing to be away from the noise. Hogjly recommended.

For our 1st visit to Val Thorens, we read most comments online and decided upon Koh I Nor for its plush lodge look. Lowering our expectations since we saw some negative comments on level of service and room view, we find ourselves extremely fortunate to be experiencing consistent 5 star service from every staff member with the exception of a miscommunication regarding our ski lesson which resulted in 2 days of venue shifting from a particular front desk personnel.

The staff is what makes this diamond on top of the hill special. It is high stressed running the resort during Christmas week with so many families, but everyone has extremely high work ethics. We had superb housekeeping (they even saved some snow for our Orangina at the balcony which we left it to chill while they shovelled the rest), ski shop (really high quality rental gear and service - Matthew even came to pick up my ski slides when i overshot the private ski in ski out entrance to the hotel and Veah (?) was always encouraging with her ski tips), main restaurant where we took half-board option and never regretted it with the quick, efficient services and hearty choices with daily menu changes for dinner and one of the best Xmas eve course, the spacious spa which we chill everyday after a hard day of ski - i could rave non stop.

Needless to say, we will come back to stay. Thanks for the great first time memories.

Everything is really good and overall experience was excellent. But there are small details which still can be improved. NY dinner was overpriced, room has many small imperfections (no tooth-paste, toilet door doesn’t fully close, cleaning is on 4 out of 5 etc.).

Location is good (ski-out) but all restaurants are 7-10 minutes away.

We stayed here for 1 week. We were 4 adults and 2 kids (2,6 years and 8 months). The hotel has a good location, we arrive easily everywhere and from the slops you arrive in the hotel directly. The rooms are fully equipped with everything necessary for kids.
A very big NO is to the staff, especially the staff from the lobby bar. One of the guys yelled at my 2 year son because he went to another table (a free table that apparently wasn’t allowed to touch). They were very unfriendly and rude. The manager of the lobby bar even asked us to move from a table we were sitting because he considered it’s not suitable for 4 adults (but it was big enough and we already had our drinks there).
We come every year to Val Thorens for skiing, but because of the very impolite staff I don’t think we will be back at the same hotel, even if it looks really nice.

The Koh I Nor is named after the diamond in the Crown Jewels and provides service to match. It is located at the top of Val Thorens and most rooms have fantastic views out over the slopes under the plein sud lift. VT is a great place especially for intermediate skiers with masses of challenging but not excessively difficult runs. After a hard days skiing , relaxing with a beer on the hotels terrace was a delight in the late afternoon sun.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable and are kept spotlessly clean by the staff.
There is an excellent spa available for use by all guests with a pool, a steam room and sauna and a hot tub. The spa was busy when we used it at the end of the day but was large enough that there was room for everyone to enjoy it without it becoming too crowded.
Since the hotel is on a narrow street at the top of VT our coach transfer was not able to get right to the door. However, the hotel has a couple of shuttle buses that are available to guests for free to help with taking luggage and skis up the last part of the hill.
Each room has a ski locker which has heated vents so your boots are toasty warm in the morning. Skis are stored separately by the staff in an adjacent room right next to the edge of the piste where they are delivered on request each morning.
We stayed on a half board package and so had access to the four course menu in the L’atelier restaurant each evening. The food was truly a highlight of a great stay with a variety of dishes that were truly superb. Every evening there is dessert buffet including a range of fabulous patisserie that are handmade every day. For me there was lots of choice on the menus especially fish and seafood which I love. For my wife however who doesn’t eat fish the choices were a bit more limited, especially a lack of vegetarian dishes. This would be one of the few criticisms I would make.

I would also like to complement all the staff at reception, in the restaurant, in the spa and in housekeeping. Without exception they were friendly and helpful, tolerant of our poor attempts to speak French and speaking English when our vocabulary failed us!

Overall I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a great holiday and hope we will have a chance to return in the future.

Although we didn't stay in the hotel on this trip, as we were staying in the residences next door I still felt I should review the service provided by the hotel. Firstly the hotel staff we dealt with on this trip were extremely helpful to us in particular Corentin who went out of his way to assist us even though we were guests of the residences. Having given the ski shop a very poor review a couple of years ago I was relieved to find that the previous manager of the ski shop was no longer there and that Matthew had now taken over the running of the ski shop. Matthew and his team were very welcoming and helpful and I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to thank them in person before we left. The shuttle bus drivers were also fantastic this year, special mention to JB who took us on many trips in to VT and back. Thank you.

Superb hotel, well run and all the staff were friendly and very accommodating. Locker room and ski shop provided an excellent service and the equipment was first class. The spa was of a high standard and I loved the outside pod Jacuzzi with the panoramic window overlooking the valley and ski slopes.

Apologies for not seeing your question before now. The dress code is pretty flexible although we aimed for smart casual. Some people (I think) were too casual for the setting turning up in slippers for dinner - not quite appropriate!!
