Out in the Styx Guest House is as the name suggests "out in the sticks" - ~21/2 hours from Auckland, and about 45 minutes from Hamilton. It is a family business with great hospitality and abundance of home cooked yummy food. I travelled with 5 friends and our prime purpose for our stay was to trek the Waikato River Trails....

We visited this gorgeous location for a friend's birthday party and had a wonderful time. The location is beautiful with pretty gardens and stunning views. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The dinner and breakfast foods were delicious with lots of healthy fruit and vegetables. The staff are so helpful and friendly.

What a superb lodge. I wasn't sure what to expect but from meeting Lance and he remembered my name the entire weekend (impressive when there were about 30 of us), to the first meal I was sold. This was going to be a very comfortable stay. I was staying in a dorm room with share bathroom. The bathrooms were so...

Our group of four stayed for two days while mountain biking along the Waikato Trails. The food was magnificent and plentiful. The atmosphere in the main dining room was friendly and cosy with the mid-winter fire going and a well priced bar available for evening drinks. The rooms were warm and comfortable and retch spa very welcome and rejuvenating. Lance...

When we arrived we were treated to a roaring fire in the dinning room and a beautiful view of sancuary mountain. We were in high spirits when they served dinner, wich was always delicious. At dinner, Lance (our host) told us about the attractions near to the Guesthouse. In our time staying we: Climbed mountains, cycled trails, savoured food and...

Great service, clean and comfortable rooms, exceptional food. Wonderful hosts, you could easily use the lodge as a base for trips around, Rotorua, Otorohanga Kiwi house and Waitomo and more are less than 1 hour's drive, not to mention the local attraction of the Maungatautari Ecological area ("Sanctuary Mountain") where you can see native birds close up due to the...

Wonderful stay in the beautiful Africa double room. Very spacious, with ensuite bathroom. The home cooked meals were AMAZING. Just one piece of advice: bathroom did get very wet, it needs 1. a shower curtain and 2. a squeegee to get rid of the water on the floor, 3. a screen in front of the window so you kan keep...

Not only was this a great place to go and visit the nearby sanctuary mountain reserve, the combination of a very hospitable welcome and well cooked food (Menu: Take it or Leave it!) worked very well for me. I was on my own, but felt quite at home. Breakfast was great as well, and then I had my opportunity to...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our family have been living here and operating as a restaurant and guesthouse for over 20 years. We don't have a menu but our guests are always satisfied with the delicious meals we prepare and the gorgeous setting. We are very fortunate to look directly up at the the forested mountains within the Maungatautari Ecological Island, a 3500 hectare pest free scenic reserve. We operate a drop-off service for hikers walking the traverse and our van can take up to 8 cycles for drop off and pickups on the Waikato River Trail. We are between Rotorua and Waitomo and our rates include a four course dinner and a two course breakfast. ... more   less
