Lance and Mary are lovely hosts and I would not even know where to start to explain! Their dinner and breakfast are excellent, the dinner was probably one the best meals I had so far after spending a month in New Zealand. The place is gorgeous, the backyard is beautiful, the atmosphere is both cozy and fantastic, and staying outside,...

Fantastic stay this last weekend with a group of mountain bike riders. Atmosphere, hospitality, food all to a very high standard. Seamless link to shuttle and support for along the ride of the Waikato River Trail. Thanks to Lance (adding the magic of personality, horns and local knowledge) and his team we had a wonderful stay and cannot recommend Out...

Wow, superb place to stay especially if hiking the mountain or doing one of the bike trails. The food is superb and they cater awesomely for fussy eaters too! You won't go away hungry with the three-course main meal and buffet breakfast. The spa pool was a welcome relax in the evening after our big walk up and over the...

Had the privilege of staying at "Out In The Styx" for a couple of nights recently while biking the Timber Trail. African themed room was spotlessly clean and very well fitted out. We enjoyed the spa nestled in native bush with Tuis singing overhead, after a day riding. Dinner and breakfast was excellent with healthy home cooked fare at each...

We were fortunate enough to spend a night at Out in the Styx a few weeks ago as part of a month-long mission kayaking the Waikato River and it was absolutely epic. Our hosts Nolan, Lance and Mary went out of their way to make us feel at home, the food was delicious, the beds were comfortable and the showers...

This is a must visit (book in advance) for an amazing lunch. Wonderful home grown and cooked food, a wonderfully peaceful and scenic setting and Lance let's me land the helicopter on the lawn - perfect all round!

Lance and Mary go out of the way to make you feel like your stay is special. The food is delicious and always fresh produce, often local. We stayed an extra night as part of a biking tour and were so pleased we did. Rooms are large and functional with a spa pool in each wing. The bar and dinner/breakfast...

This was the second year in a row our group stayed at OitS. Last year for just one night. But we were so impressed with the location, the roads and the food that we came back for a 4 day stay this year. We used OitS as a base for our cycle training (road race). The area is ribboned with...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our family have been living here and operating as a restaurant and guesthouse for over 20 years. We don't have a menu but our guests are always satisfied with the delicious meals we prepare and the gorgeous setting. We are very fortunate to look directly up at the the forested mountains within the Maungatautari Ecological Island, a 3500 hectare pest free scenic reserve. We operate a drop-off service for hikers walking the traverse and our van can take up to 8 cycles for drop off and pickups on the Waikato River Trail. We are between Rotorua and Waitomo and our rates include a four course dinner and a two course breakfast. ... more   less
