With so many luxury hotels in the world in spectacular settings, the affluent traveler has many choices. With that in mind, I do not think Il San Pietro in Positano is one of those that invites a revisit - maybe not even a visit for the first time.

As others on the website have noted, Il San Pietro is no longer a small hotel of unique charm able to deliver discrete and personalized service at the highest level to the most exacting of international client. Instead, Il San Pietro is now a very beautiful but completely sterile “cookie cutter high end” hotel unable to deliver anything other than homogenized Relais & Chateaux service. Yes, it still occupies a privileged perch with its own “private beach” accessible by an elevator through the rocks. And yes, it is possible to reserve a large exquisitely furnished suite with enormous private “no one can see you” terrace – as we did – for $3500 a night (before tax) with sweeping and spectacular views of the Mediterranean. But if you do, be sure to pack your own soap and shampoo: The liquid hand and shower soap supplied by the hotel in a large plastic bottle is of inferior quality. Think Costco. In our case, the plastic containers did not even have workable pumpsIn the end, we used our own soap and shampoo from home.

In a way, the worst part of our stay was our arrival. It took us two and one half hours on a low guard rail road through the mountains and then in bumper to bumper traffic, past hordes of Amalfi coast tourists, until we reached the hotel’s front door. When we sis finally arrive, there was no one to greet us. Instead, we proceeded on our own down an unmarked elevator to the hotel’s front desk, where we gave our name at the desk and a woman officiously asked for our American Express card. Not even a smile or question about our exhausting drive. After we handed over our card, she asked if this was our first time at the hotel. When I mentioned that we had actually spent our honeymoon at the hotel many years before – as I had written the hotel in details at the time I made our reservation - the woman’s completely bizarre reply was: “I checked your record. You did not write us.” A chilly reception for sure. Not what one expects in Southern Italy!

The second worst part of our stay was the food. See separate review of the hotel’s Michelin starred restaurant, which should be avoided. The third was the absurdity of our departure. The bill -exorbitant though it was – was completely correct. However the problem was again the clumsy send-off. After we paid our bill, we were presented with great ceremony with a large box of beautifully perfumed Italian soap for which we had no room in our luggage. It certainly would have been a lot more appreciated to havebeen given the soap when we checked in!

This being said, Il San Pietro is a beautiful hotel. The gardens that descend down thto the sea and our room itself was nothing short of spectcular. We just won't be going back!

Dear leloir, we found ourselves taken aback by your review, as it reflects perspectives that leave us questioning our intimate familiarity with our own establishment. While it is undeniably true that each visit constitutes a wholly individual experience, there are certain aspects that, from an objective standpoint, we struggle to fully comprehend. For instance, while you may have expressed dissatisfaction with our selection of products, I must point out that these items, introduced for sale in the past year and the preceding year, have garnered considerable acclaim and are frequently purchased by departing guests. Moreover, any visitor arriving at Il San Pietro is greeted by our dedicated valets stationed on the street, whose primary role is to extend a warm welcome and assist in directing guests. I am unsure of the specifics surrounding your arrival, but I can assure you that our parking facilities are consistently staffed and monitored. The same sentiment holds true regarding our restaurant—the evaluation of culinary offerings is inherently subjective and can vary greatly from one guest to another, making it difficult for us to intervene. It is truly disheartening to learn of your decision not to return, particularly given that the concluding remarks of your review suggest that your overall assessment of your stay was not entirely unfavorable. We genuinely appreciate your feedback and thank you once again for it.

What an amazing experience. Everything went far better than expected, which does not happen very often .
We spent 2 nights ( not enough) August 29-31
Boat transfer from Positano port to Il San Pietro was quick and and welcoming.
Staff at the check in was excellent. We were lucky to get upgraded which considering hotel was full , was not expected. The property is a short distance from Positano with beautiful view or the Positano. Being located on the hilltop gives you Panasonic views of the surroundings from everywhere. The property is very well kept and staff at front desk, beach , beach restaurant, pool , bits and bites , at the restaurant and at the parking area and exit were all outstanding.
We love swimming in the sea and because of our age we dread going up and down the stairs to get to the beach. Having an elevator going down to the beach was a blessing. Staff at the beach club were very attentive and very helpful. We had a chance to try some amazing cocktails. The beach restaurant Carolina was serving some great food for lunch and dinner with breathtaking views.
We were leaving the best for the last. The GM of the property is amazing. Andrea Zana is the best GM ever . He was everywhere greeting his guest from morning to night and helping them with A to Z. He made us feel like we are part of his family. No wonder rest of the staff in the property has same positive attitude.
We are definitely going back.
Recommend it without any reservations.

Perhaps the most revealing opportunity to personally review a vacation experience occurs soon after one returns home. Especially true in our case as we just returned home yesterday from Italy's Amalfi Coast to the USA's west coast. Some 22 hours in total transit time later and after arriving home exhausted from the trip we paused to ask ourselves: Was the journey afar worth the time , effort, and money? We are incredibly fortunate to have extensively travelled the world over the past 30 years. As a result it's fair to say that we have developed a critical and discerning eye for what's real and certainly for what's not. There have been times when our post trip reflections result in lack luster feelings and to conclude: "That one is not a repeat". However, following each of our 6 different visits over the past 12 years to the Il San Pietro Hotel we have each time reviewed the trip with resounding positivity and with a desire to plan a return trip as early as the next year.

Why so? There are the obvious factors inclusive of the hotel's incredibly unique setting which provides a competely unhurried breathtaking ambience quite different than the pace of life unfolding in nearby Positano. Their unrivaled location can be reviewed in detail via the hotel web site's and within a drone type video of this cliffside wonder. Add to this impecable, highly skilled service, top notch food quality, room comfort, decor, & privacy and this hotel is unquestionably worthy for inclusion and top tier designation within any list of the world's best. Be leery of any otherwise objective looking list or conversation about the world's best hotels to be found in a seaside location that doesn't have Il San Pietro among it's top handful of recommendations.

For us and well beyond these essential attributes expected at a world class and expensive hotel is the secret ingredient that makes the arduous trip to and from the difficult to reach Amalfi Coast so worthwhile. The staff members of Il San Pietro make all the difference. While at Il San Pietro we are drenched in the lore and beauty of these wonderful Italian people. Their spirits are strong and their desire to create the best possible guest experience is worn on their faces as a badge of honor and prideful mission. Their devotion to such an unselfish craft is something we greatly admire. So much so that we return often and are happy to claim these wonderful people as our international friends.

The Il San Pietro Hotel is easily our favorite hotel experience found anywhere in the world.

To the Cinque Family, GM Andrea and the entire Team:

Arrivederci, a tutti!

Il San Pietro di Positano is undoubtedly one of the most stunning hotels in Italy, offering what is arguably the best view of all the top-tier hotels in the country. The panoramic vistas of the Amalfi Coast are simply breathtaking—so much so that they take your breath away the moment you step onto the terrace. The view alone makes this hotel worth visiting, a sight that you'll never forget.

As expected from a hotel of this caliber, the service is impeccable. The staff is polite, friendly, and professional, adhering to the high standards one would anticipate at such an exclusive property.

However, despite its undeniable beauty and exceptional location, there are a few drawbacks that, unfortunately, detract from the overall experience. One of the major issues is the atmosphere—or rather, the lack of it. The hotel’s outdoor bar is a lovely spot with a view, but there's a notable absence of music, which feels a bit strange for a luxury hotel. The silence makes it feel somewhat lifeless, and unless you're interested in complete peace and quiet, it's hard to relax in such an environment. In comparison, the Hotel Sirenuse, a direct competitor, offers a more vibrant and lively atmosphere, with music playing softly everywhere—whether live or from speakers—which makes it easier to unwind.

Moreover, the hotel lacks any real sense of activity in the evenings. By 10:30 p.m., the only sound you’ll hear is the chirping of crickets. There's no entertainment or energy after dark, which can make the hotel feel a bit dull. While the restaurant does have some live music, the pianist only plays, without singing, which feels a little less engaging compared to other high-end hotels where live performers often sing along with their music.

Another downside is that if you want to enjoy a drink or smoke an Icos, you’re left sitting in silence outside at the bar. It’s almost eerily quiet, and without any music or social ambiance, it can feel lonely and a bit sterile.

Given the hotel’s steep price tag—nearly €15.000 for just three nights—it feels like a missed opportunity not to offer a more vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere in the evenings. In comparison, I felt much more relaxed and at ease at Hotel Sirenuse, which provided a more dynamic and sociable environment, complete with soothing background music.

In summary, while Il San Pietro di Positano is an objectively beautiful hotel with exceptional views and top-tier service, it falls short in providing the lively, engaging atmosphere that one might expect at such a luxury property. For that reason, I would rate it 3 out of 5. It's hard not to compare it to Sirenuse, where the overall experience—view, service, and ambiance—felt much more enjoyable.

We sincerely appreciate your feedback, which we will certainly take into consideration. However, we must emphasize that all such decisions are made in consultation with our regular guests, the majority of whom have expressed a desire to maintain a serene environment by limiting musical activities, with the exception of the live performances at the Zass restaurant (it depends on the night, some only music some with singers). This preference is rooted in their choice of our establishment for its tranquil atmosphere, which is predominantly shaped by the natural surroundings—a hallmark of our hotel that has garnered affection from guests of all ages. Regarding the smoking policy, in accordance with Italian legislation, our hotel maintains a strict no-smoking policy indoors, ensuring a pleasant experience for all our patrons.

Absolutely incredible hotel. Our room was stunningly beautiful with a large water view terrace with a perfect view towards Praiano where we watched the sun rise over an ocean cliff in the morning, the ocean sparkle during the day, and the butterflies and birds dance all day over the flower covered cliff side below us. It was like being in a dream. The rest of the hotel is absolutely stunning though far from pretentious. This is due to the warmth, charm and incredible friendliness of the amazing staff. After just a day or two, we felt like we were family.

The food is spectacular - Carlino's, the beachside restaurant is excellent; Zass, a 2 star Michelin rated restaurant, is sublime. Morning breakfast though in Zass was one of my favorites; eating a beautiful breakfast watching the sun sparkle on the ocean as the day emerged. Just incredible. The outdoor terrace with its incredible views, cocktail scene, and amazing green olives served with all drinks was equally stunning.

And it does not end there. The beach area is incredible. There is an elevator, literally carved into an ocean cliff, that brings you down to a grotto where you then enter their own beach, a beach terrace for sunning and swimming, and a paddle board/kayaking area at the beach. There is a daily complimentary boat tour of the Amalfi Coast which includes swimming and drinks. The gym is outdoor under orange trees. Pilates and yoga is beachfront in the morning at 9.

This is the best place that I have ever stayed at - the hotel, the private beach, the food, the many amenities, but most importantly, the lovely and amazing staff who welcomed us so warmly. My husband and I are so thankful that we were able to visit this wonderful place. I would give Il San Pietro 10 stars on a scale of 1 to 5.

Our time at the Hotel Il San Pietro di Positano was far beyond our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we were amazed by the elegance and beauty of the place, perched on a cliff with breathtaking views of the sea and the Amalfi coast.

The hotel’s restaurant, Zass, offers exquisite cuisine, highlighting local Italian flavours with a touch of modernity. Each dish is a real delight and the service, impeccable. We also loved the breakfast, varied and composed of fresh and tasty products, served facing a beautiful panorama.

Special mention for the private beach accessible by elevator, a luxury that allowed us to enjoy moments of relaxation in total privacy. The hotel offers a heavenly setting where every moment is a pleasure. Il San Pietro di Positano is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hotels we have stayed in, perfect for rejuvenating and living a luxurious experience on the Amalfi Coast.

Thank you to the whole team for this perfect stay. We will return without hesitation!

We were absolutely blown away by ISP. We usually stay at Treville, a few hundred metres away towards Positano, but as they were closing for the season we moved to ISP. Treville dropped us off in their boat, and we made our way up the lift to reception. As soon as stepped out of the lift we immediately decided to extend our stay for another night. The views are simply extraordinary, and a we were fortunate to be upgraded to a suite with a wall of glass overlooking Positano. Even the shower and tub had the same panoramic view.
The food was exquisite, both at the informal beach restaurant and their Michelin restaurant, Zass.
Yes, it is expensive, but the food and drink prices are very reasonable for a hotel of this quality. The mini bar was included, and they even threw in lunch on the beach on the final day when they were closing.
Throughout the stay, there was huge generosity of spirit, with the most charming staff, led by the best GM we have ever experienced running the show front and centre.
It is unfair to compare ISP with Treville - they are both world class hotels. Treville is akin to staying with friends in their incredible private villa, whereas ISP is the full 5 star hotel package with facilities and restaurants to match. But both excel at service, with nothing too much trouble.
We can’t wait to visit again!

My wife & I have been to ISP 7 times, and it is the trip we look forward to every year. I recently joined a conversation where people asked what their favorite hotel in the world was, and for me that answer was simple: ISP. Why?

First and foremost, the people. There are many beautiful hotels in the world, but very few where you feel like you are part of an extended family. The hotel has done an amazing job retaining its staff, and it shows.

The "beach". There are various beach clubs along the Amalfi Coast, but they are crowded, and you don't really get to relax and take in the beauty of the surroundings. The beach is built into a rock, and you have a front row seat to the sea, with easy access to jump in and swim. And the beach staff (grazie Sabatino and Carlo -- we will miss you next year) is amazing.

The tennis court. If you are a tennis player, this is a bucket list place to play. If you need someone to hit with, the pro Giuseppe is a great guy and has become a friend over the years.

The terrace. Hands down the best place to get a drink before dinner. And, if you like olives...

Carlino. I've taken boats to many different lunch spots on the Amalfi Coast, but it's hard to beat the view and the food at Carlino. Grazie Massimo.

Zass. I am not one who seeks out Michelin restaurants, preferring the casual trattoria. But, while Zass has its Michelin credentials, they also prepare some of the best simple pastas and grilled fish -- and the setting and service are amazing. And if you like wine... Grazie Salvatore.

Location. Close to Positano but not in Positano. And, with its own dock, you can take water taxis to restaurants all along the coast without ever having to get in a car. For me, the unique aspect of traveling to the Amalfi Coast is that you can travel by boat, and ISP lets you take advantage of that.

I'm sure I've left out some people (sorry), but from concierge (Paola) to reception (Lorenzo) to housekeeping, everyone greets you with a truly sincere "buon giorno". The beach is so great that I don't spend a lot of time at the pool, but the pool is run by Pasquale and if you get a chance to spend time with him, his smile is infectious.

And a special grazie to Andrea, the manager of the hotel, whose graciousness makes you feel at home.

Heartfelt welcome from the bellboy to the boss. This hotel is born from an authentic approach to Excellence with a capital E. From the moment one arrives one feels cuddled, welcome, like your presence actually makes that staff member happy. From chatting with gardner Ciro about the amazing bougainvillea and heavily scented flowering tree that greets you on the property, to the precious housekeepers that keep the room looking absolutely pristine clean, to Alfredo the concierge whose pleasure and pride for working at the hotel is paramount; everyone you meet is an integral part of the experience which (seemingly!) effortlessly just happens. Everything is in the right place, everything is easy.
The beauty of the location and the attention to detail is phenomenal- i tried to capture as much as possible but really the only way is to see for yourself. A special thank you to Fabio at Zass, whose gentile voice and attention during dinner was exemplary - and forever an inspiration.

I don’t even know where to start. This place is an absolute gem…the only place to stay in Positano. My husband and I were already planning our return while still on property. We stay at a lot of five-star hotels, and this was by far our favorite one in the world to visit so far.

We were visiting for my birthday and our first wedding anniversary. It rained pretty much the whole time we were there so we had to cancel our private charter to Capri among other things. The concierge was super helpful, helping us move things around with the weather being what it was.

We stayed in a Prestige Room I believe that was super spacious and had a massive covered terrace with 3-4 lounge chairs. Nice and private. Rooms are incredible, unique, and well decorated. Super comfortable and goodies delivered everyday. Restaurants are outstanding…Carlino was our personal favorite but Zass Michelin star restaurant is incredible, too. You have to have the lemon pasta at Carlino… I dream about it. Don’t skip the breakfast….the food is amazing and service outstanding. Having breakfast with that view might’ve been my favorite part of the whole trip. Love the branded bag and sandals at check-in. The daily amenities/activities are fun and exciting. Most notable is the pizza making class. So fun! The shuttle service is super responsive and quick only ~5 mins to town. The staff everywhere is amazing, so welcoming, and they really treat every guest as family.

For my planning WAG’s out there, we looked at the other luxury properties in the area including Le Sirenuse. We went there for cocktails and while it was cool to see, I’m so glad we didn’t stay there. Part of the appeal of this property is that it sits outside of town so you don’t have the crowds and you get the quiet and the privacy which has gotten harder to find in Positano. The hotel ethos is also rooted in nature which we really loved and appreciated. One plus I have to call out… Dyson hairdryers in the rooms. Yas.

I probably can say many more good things about this property but you just have to experience it for yourself. It is heaven. Everything about this property and their staff is exquisite. What a magical experience. We can’t wait to come back! Grazie mille a million times il San Pietro!!!

I don't think so, but you really should call to make certain. Quite honestly, I don't think this is a place for kids.

We were there in April so it was not crowed. If they take reservations for a drink, book it. You don't want to miss the view and the memory.

For starters, Il San Pietro can arrange for absolutely ANYTHING you can imagine so ask them first. If you want a well recommended boat company use Premium Boat Charter (from Amalfi). I’ve them tor 10+ years and they top notch.
