We visited Anzio to view the 'Beach Landing museum' and other monuments to 1944. Conveniently located for everything in Anzio, La Bussola is clean and cosy. The owners are very nice and a helpful source of information. There is a good breakfast bar with tasty food. Definitely five stars!

Situated close to the main square and the port, the location was excellent. The greeting was friendly and staff were helpful allowing a late check out and a place to leave our luggage for the day. The room was spacious and very clean and pleasantly furnished. The bathroom was fine with a good shower. Comfortable bed. Attention to small details was apparent throughout the hotel with flowers and a Christmas tree, and obvious effort has been made to make the most of this small hotel. We were there two nights and enjoyed our stay in this seafoodie paradise of a town.

We stayed at the hotel for one night, before we took the ferry to Ponza Island. The hotel is located in the city centre, just a couple of minutes walk from the harbour. The room was ok - nothing special. The staff in the reception changed all the time, and no one knew what the other one had said. Very boring breakfast ;)

Anzio itself is a waterfront fishing town that was heavily bombed during the war, famous for allied landings and is home to a Commonwealth cemetery and War Museum(closed Wednesdays) . Lots of history here relating to 2nd world war. The shopping is minimal and expensive. Hotel La Bussola di Anzio is a few minute walk to the large piazza and town centre. The Hotel is one or two streets away from the marina and restaurants line both sides of the street fronting the water. Very nice hotel entry, parking directly opposite the hotel, rooms very average but clean. The bathroom had terrible cotton type towels. The staff on arrival were friendly but other staff as they came into work were often grumpy, not helpful and not very communicative. What we didn't like was coming back from dinner late one night finding a number of room keys, from guests who were still out , lined up along the reception desk so we could help ourselves. Not a very safe practice. Breakfast was ordinary and little of it but in and all fairness, a group of soldiers had just been to breakfast and perhaps they might have been really hungry. Good location but they need to lift their game quite a bit.

Our big mistake was not having a plan for one night before returning home from Rome,we had driven the coast roads and Anzio was famous for the allied landings so we decided to go and look.Too much driving, too much sun,a late lunch and a little too much wine had us searching for a hotel in the middle of the afternoon. The town square became deserted and a local pointed up a side street to a hotel saying it was good............................................ The receptionist was not the most polite and said there was a one room left overlooking the street with a terrace, make a decision quickly as they were really full.We should have asked to see the room first........................................A double bed squeezed against the wall, patio doors open to a terrace wide enough to get one chair and small table as a balancing act with a broken canopy overhanging obscuring the zero street rooftop views.Lousy pillows but enough to sleep for the time being. The toilet ensuite was just that,a curtain behind a wall with the toilet and shower head above it and dirty grout in the tiles, not very nice but we were committed. Night came quickly and so did the noise with drunken people throwing up outside, groans and moans through thin walls,we made a bad choice but lived through the night. The rate included a continental breakfast served by an Indian lady who was about as interested in making us a coffee as we were to drink it,the danish had gone no cold cuts and they ran out of juice and it was not even 8am.We made a point to check out quickly and saw memorabilia from visiting Navy crews and officers saying how much they had enjoyed their stay, sadly ours was really terrible................................
