You would think that having paid in advance in full 6 months before, the property might have recorded that we were due to arrive - not so. We turned up full of excited anticipation to discover that the young 'guardian' of the property knew nothing of our booking , the owners/managers (?) were all away and the room (our room) was occupied. After lengthy conversations/telephone calls all in French ( forget trying to use English) they found us another Chambre d'hote nearby - acceptable but not the Medieval castle we had booked. To date, several weeks later we have had no word of apology or recompense - apart from a call when were were still in France confirming we did not need to pay for the room they had re-located us to !! Shambolic - and clearly indifferent to their commitments and any concept of customer service.…
It was a privilege to have an opportunity to stay in this historic castle, passionately restored by its owners. We stayed in the square tower with lovely antiques and a four poster bed. It was spotless. The views of the countryside are spectacular and at night, the view of the stars, warm glow of candles, and sounds of nature made for an unforgettable experience. The owner thought of everything to make guests comfortable without sacrificing authenticity. The bathroom included a shower, toilet, and sink with plenty of space for toiletries. We appreciated the fresh breakfast basket and the organic coffee we made in the French press in a small but well equipped kitchen; it was a memorable breakfast à deux in lovely surroundings. Allow enough time for a guided visit. We will have to return for another tour. This short visit was one of the highlights of our vacation. Merci and à la prochaine.…
Just a few miles outside of Bordeaux, this magical property takes you back in time. The castle offers two suites, a large square tower suite and a smaller suite in an old round tower. I stayed two nights in the large square tower which featured a huge room with four poster bed, a second bedroom with a double and twin, a kitchenette, and bathroom. The suite could easily accommodate a family of 5. A lovely breakfast basket awaits you each morning outside your chamber door. There are many steps to climb to reach the large suite, which I feel only adds to the ancient flavor of the property. As a guest, you are free to roam around the marvelous ruins. There are a lovely chapel and a few other restored rooms to explore. The owners of the property, who live onsite, are friendly and charming. If you've ever dreamed of staying in an ancient castle, stay here. The location puts you very close to Bordeaux and and all the regions wineries.…
If you have up to a week to explore points east and south of Bordeaux, then you ought to try at least one night at Chateau de Langoiran. More than 500 years old, the room is very spacious. You need to be fit (and brave) to climb up the 40 steps from the foot of the tower to your room. Owners speak little French but are very hospitable. Breakfast is rather plain but it's the experience that will be unforgetable. You need to ask for a flashlight if you are returning to your room after 10pm as the place will be pitch dark. The view from the tower is simply exhilarating especially first thing in the morning. Go for it.
