Our room was set up beautifully with a welcome message in rose petals in bed prior to arrival. Staff was very friendly and quick to help with anything. Breakfast buffet overlooking the jungle was super nice.
Make sure to pack mosquito repellent if you stay here as we got bit several times just in the outdoor hotel lobby during our wait to check-in since our room was not ready.
Also a little bit away from the town where there are many shops and restaurants. Food at the hotel was a bit overpriced for the area,
Overall a great stay and would recommend!

Dear NealVictoria, Thank you for staying with us at Jungle Retreat by Kupu Kupu Barong and thank you for your wonderful review. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and I am especially happy to hear that our associates delivered friendly, helpful and attentive service during your stay. Thank you for your nice review of our service quality. We do try to please all palates and preferences. Furthermore, as you discovered, the resort is set inside the green jungle. We have also taken note of your remark in regards to the pricing at the restaurant. Please do recommend us to family and friends and we look forward to welcoming you back whenever you plan your next visit to Ubud. If I may be of further assistance, please do contact me via om.jr@kupubarong.com. My team and I remain at your service. Kind Regards, Sheefa & The Jungle Retreat by Kupu Kupu Barong Team

We spent one week in Ubud. The atmosphere was lovely thanks to the kindness of the staff who took care of us a lot in every situation.
The food was really good, especially local doshes, and the barbecue chef made a great job! We suggest the menu “à la carte”.

We had 2 organised tours around the Kintamani area, the rice terraces of Jatiluwih and the local temples. We are so gratefull for the company of Edhy who was our guide. We appreciated so much his suggestions for local restaurants, shops and spa. Valentina and Mariano.

We had an amazing stay at Jungle Retreat. The facilities of the hotel and the personnel were magnificent. The room was clean and beautiful, three pools are available for you to chose from so you will never get bored. Spa was also amazing, really nothing to say as everything was perfect. 1000% recommended!

We have chosen this hotel due to its fascinating pictures in booking.com and had the biggest disappointment in Bali so far. The place is basically an ugly concrete block built in the middle of the jungle as an extention to a villa resort. The service and the facilities are only mediocre although the prices are quite high. Rooms are tasteless cells stacked together and separated by thin walls so you can listen to everything happening around you. The hotel has a workshop right next to the concrete blocks to disturb you during the day with metal cutting tools and roosters in the garden to wake you up at 6 in the morning. Go and rest yourself a private villa with a private pool for half the price and save yourself a ton of money while spending your time in peace in Ubud like you should!

Before reading this please understand that we are not a snobby couple at all and much prefer a weekend camping to a 5-star hotel and we very rarely complain, this is the first time we have placed a review on TripAdvisor, however we felt the need to air our opinion this time and warn others not to make the same mistake.

First impressions of the retreat were great, we arrived via taxi to the lobby and were greeted with a reath of flowers, and a golf buggy to our reception and then greeted with a welcome drink. This is were the good treatment stopped and we soon began to realise we were more of an inconvenience whilst the "villas" received the most attention. The hotel was a basic block of concrete with some vine trellis on the outside to try to make it blend into the jungle and the rooms were very average, outdated, with very unappealing balconies.

We had noted to the hotel that's this was our honeymoon (after hearing tales from friends of upgraded rooms or exceptional service). Not meaning to sound ungrateful or expecting too much, we were offered two small glasses of complementary wine and a small dry cake. We met a pair of fellow honeymooners during white water rafting, and at their hotel they received an upgrade and two free nights stay. We also visited their hotel and the level of service and hotel quality was far superior for a similar amount of money.

Things continued to get worse when we went for dinner at La View restaurant. Beautiful scenery over-looking the jungle, however the food did not match the scenery. I went for the nasi goreng. A dish I have frequently paid 45k IDP or less for over our two week honeymoon, however, here the dish cost 140k plus 21% tax and service. Expecting a culinary revolution for the cost, I was very disspointed when this was the worst dish I had eaten in the two weeks we had been in Bali/Lombok. Bland and tasteless, the same went for my wife's dish, of which she left half. Stunning views, but poor and very expensive food - a shame as we were hoping for a nice romantic meal.

For the size of the hotel the provisions are very poor. To get the free shuttle bus into ubud you have to book the day before. We tried to book to be told it was full. Out of interest we asked how many seats were available, and in reply were told 7. 7 seats for a full resort?? Hardly a shuttle "bus". If you want to eat at the infinity pool, of which is the main selling point of the hotel and shows up as the first picture on booking.com, good luck as it was fully booked for all of the 5 nights (although the resort seemed very empty). So your supposed to book before you arrive??

Our worst experience came from visiting the elephant safari park. On leaving the park we called the hotel for a taxi and were quoted 325k for a collection 30 minutes away (bearing in mind we paid 500k for a 6 hour tour with a very friendly local taxi driver). Being quoted 30 minutes to be collected we sat down. An hour passed, we called the hotel, they said the driver had gone to the wrong place (how many elephant safari parks are there in Taro?) and that it was to be another 45 minutes. Annoyed we waited... Another hour passed, called again, they said they are sending another driver and he should be 45 mins... Fuming, we waited a total of 2 hours 45 minutes. After all of this the hotel didn't even offer to cover the cost of the taxi and suggested it may even have been "an adventure"... Sat in a car park for 2 hours 45 is not an adventure!!

Finally on our second to last day we tried to order room service around midday (few too many bintangs the night before). We chose from the menu in our welcome pack to then be told while ordering "sorry we don't offer room service to your building", this was just another annoyance to add to the list, we felt as though 'our building' was of the lowest priority on the resort. If room service isn't available, why provide a menu in our room? As we couldn't order to our room we went down to the restaurant and ordered two club sandwiches, an orange juice and a bottle of water without looking at the menu. I was shocked to receive the bill for 450k IDP around £27GBP)..... For two sandwiches and two drinks???? In comparison, last night in Ubud we ate a brilliant 3 course meal with beers and wine for much less than that.

Another large selling point of the hotel is the accompanying spa, having seen prices in Bali of around 100k we expected to pay maybe 2-3 times more but not 10-30 times more! The prices ranged from 1-3million IDP.... Extortionate!!

I don't understand how the hotel has a 5-star rating, as it was very very underwhelming. The hotel seem to want to overcharge you and rip you off at every point from exchanging money, to getting taxis, eating, drinking and spa treatment. I wouldn't mind spending money on quality but this hotel is very expensive without the quality to warrant such high costs. We ate out every night to avoid the high costs.

After airing all of the opinions above to a staff member on the phone, all we got was an un-genuine "sorry", and then to top it off were asked if we would like to go opt for late check out as our flight was late in the evening to be told it would cost 990k IDP (£60GBP).... We were thinking we may be offered this complementary due to all of the issues and as an apology but no, more extortion. Especially considering we haven't seen one other holidaymaker in our block during our 5 days (meaning the rooms are empty and no reason we couldn't stay for a couple more hours).

Ubud as a location was brilliant, as was the rest of our honeymoon, however this hotel has left a bad taste in our mouths. In contrast we had the best villa experience ever on the Gili Islands and could not recommend them enough, please see our other review.

We are staying at the Jungle retreat. First of all we did not know that this is not run by the same management as Kupu Kupu Barong. The management is different, and therefore this is not Jungle retreat by Kupu Kupu Barong in the true sense!
Second, the service is non existent. The hotel needs buggies to transport guests and for the entire hotel there is only one buggy in operation. Today we waited for over 15 minutes before a buggy came by.

I got a very good deal from the Kupu Kupu Barong website on their flash sale when they first opened their Jungle View Room in October 2014! Sorry it's a bit updated but since it was such a memorable experience, I decide to write again.

Check-in: smooth! We were then driven with the golf cart to the building where our jungle view room was located. It was a new building with a rooftop pool (nothing much really, it was too hot for me and the pool too small).

Decoration & Resort Ambiance: relaxing, very natural looking with a lot of wood. They don't seem to change much of the land structure and plenty of green shades everywhere.

Room: to my happy surprise, upon check in I got a mini personalised welcome letter from the hotel which was a really lovely touch! The room was spacious with a large balcony for you to unwind, a really comfortable bed. Cable TV and internet WiFi.

Bathroom: there was no separate bathroom - located behind the partitioned wall. Spacious washing basin counter with L'Occitane amenities.

Breakfast: one of the highlights of my stay! I chose from different breakfast set. The banana pancake was delicious and the green view from the top of the building was very soothing.

Pool: the main pool was located just few minutes walks from our room, it was small-medium sized and was nice to dip in. Plenty of shades if you are concerned. I did not even bother the rooftop building pool - as mentioned, small and too hot.

L'Occitane Spa: one of the best I've ever tried (and I tried a lot). Price tag was massive, however it was really worth the experience. The masseuse was professional, the product was excellent, and I cannot emphasize more on the beauty of the view. Please don't expect the treatment to be done on top of a real mango tree though!

Staffs: excellent all throughout - true Balinese hospitality!

Drinks: at sundown I went to have some cocktails in the main dining area. They were reasonably priced for a hotel and the view of the valley and river and people doing white water rafting.

Dinner: I had two dinners - one at the jungle view building and one at the main dining room. The fried rice at the jungle view building was too dry (in comparison the fried rice in the dining room), and I liked the dining room better.

I feel that the deal that I had (USD 110) including breakfast was one of the best deals I've ever managed to get.. ever. Will I come back without the deal? Absolutely! I will perhaps try the villa next time.

Beware! There are a set of rooms which are not shown on their website and are cannot be described as a retreat in the jungle. They are on the edge of a back street leading to the resort, about 20m from a very busy main road. Our noises of the jungle consisted of motorbikes, car horns and revving engines. Our view was of a concrete wall. We arrived around 8pm after an exhausting journey from Mt Bromo and with check in taking over an hour we were too exhausted to make a fuss. The hotel was fully booked so we knew we would not be able to change rooms. The rooms are spacious but that is all they had going for them. It was a 10 minute walk to breakast/pool/gym past workshops, laundry, houses and a shop. This wouldn't normally be an issue but we had paid a lot of money for a jungle retreat.
At check out the Manager was very sympathetic and after some negotiation refunded the cost of an evening meal as compensation. To think that the resort can get away with putting some guests in these concrete outhouses and charge the same price or even suggest that they are offering the same experience is appalling.

This place was the worst we have stayed at in bali.. where to begin.. we arrived and was left sitting outside for 45mins until they took us to cheak in.. that took another 40mins.. we than got shown our room (we paid extra on the scoopon for upgrade) we told them it was our honeymoon, and all the upgrade was was another single bed in the room, pointless.. the room stank and the walls were that thin all we could hear was the stomping of people above us and next to us.. the room and whole area was full of mosquitos.. the bedding was filthy and the decorative material they kept putting over it was stained.. the beds felt like sleeping on rocks same as the pillows..
The cleaning of the rooms barely got done in the morning, didnt refill water or even take dishes..

The rooms looked nothing like there pictures at all. None of the resort did. Look at the pictures than add 20years or use.

Breakfast consisted of about 3 things..

When u called reception for information they didnt understand what u were asking (simple, can we book shuttle bus?) and often hung up on us..

The resort is a 15/20 min drive into town, there is nothing around or in the resort at all..

Our deal included meals.. well these meals came as set menus, hesitant we still ordered.. tasted like dish water.. no flavour at all..

And dont come here if your looking to relax in or by the pool, there were 8 sunbeds and was located in the middle of a restuarant on the roof..

The walk anywhere within the "resort" took 10/15mins up and down very steep hills.

The best part about this hotel were the staff.. they were all so nice n friendly and enjoy a laugh..

I would not stay here and would advise people against it.

Depends what you order. I love Indonesian food which is cheap. Other dishes between $20 and $30AUD. Catch the free shuttle into Ubud and dine there which has many restaurants and much cheaper.

The resort has an hourly shuttle (if i recall correctly), complementary to guests. Its about 15min ride to Ubud centre. Uber is not recommended in Ubud (Ubud tourism wants to promote their own taxi use so frowns on Uber). You can also get resort to arrange for private transport to and fro at negotiated rate.
