Presided over by a sacred stone tiger, Amandari was designed after a traditional Balinese village on the verdant lip of the Ayung River Gorge, and is the first Bali-style luxury resort on the island. 31 guest suites and villa are reached via winding pathways, while the curving swimming pool mimics the rice paddies below. Close to the artistic centre of Ubud, this place of peace invites both reflection and the exploration of Bali's cultural heart, as well as its mountainous region to the north.

This property is a “true” Aman. I don’t think I need to say more. I will definitely stay here the next time I come to Bali. I believe the negative comments/reviews are from people who have no idea what Aman is supposed to be and thus, they were expecting glitz. Aman is quiet luxury, some people just don’t understand. You have to come to appreciate. The photos really don’t do justice.

While I’m sure the rooms are great, the restaurant left quite a bit to be desired. The night wasn’t off to a very strong start when we came to the restaurant and found out the table we had reserved for a birthday dinner had been given away to another family. Although accidents happen, besides small things like not taking away menu’s after ordering, forgetting to check if everyone has the necessary cutlery, this unfortunately wouldn’t be the only instance during the evening. Though the taste of the food was good, our chicken soup took 1.5 hours to be prepared, only to show up luke warm. Our soup was followed by the Indonesian Rice Table, which came after another 45 minutes of waiting. While trying to put the platter down, the waiter accidentally dropped all of the food on the floor. Though the second round of rice tables luckily came faster, by this point we’d already been waiting at least 2 hours without any sort of main. All accidents aside, the food did taste very nice, however, nothing spectacular. Despite the food tasting very nice and the staff trying their best and being very nice and accommodating, for a restaurant that claims itself to offer a “luxury Indonesian fine dining experience” and is part of a hotel that charges over $1,000 a night, the service did not live up to expectations.

Dear thomhagedoorn, Thank you for sharing your feedback about your recent dining experience at our restaurant., we are truly sorry to hear that your overall experience did not meet the high standards that we strive to maintain. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by the table mix-up during your birthday dinner. While accidents can happen, we understand that this was not an ideal way to start your special evening, and we regret any disappointment it may have caused. We will work on improving our reservation management to prevent such occurrences in the future. We also acknowledge the shortcomings in our service, including the delay in serving your food for dropping the dish Your feedback is much appreciated and we will use it as a learning opportunity to enhance our guest experiences. We genuinely hope you will consider giving us another chance in the future to showcase the true quality of our services. Warm regards, Michel & the Amandari family

Amandari was lovely. Total on brand Aman. Low density, high-service experience. Loved the way it made me think of Bali. We checked out early from total loser Mandapa next door to come to Amandari. Amandari is higher perched on the mountain than the awful Mandapa next door. You get a sophisticated experience unlike the common white river rafting vibe of Mandapa. The room is spectacular. I remember the beautifully printed walls. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced as fine of wall coverings. The pool is perfect for the energy of the place. I loved the pool area. The staff would cover up chairs for when it would drizzle. There is a small covered area on the outer side of the pool. In a particularly strong downpour I took cover underneath it. That moment helped shape my vision of Bali. I don’t know that I will ever forget it. If you are seriously considering a high end hotel in this area of Bali, stay at the Amandari. It’s great. Also, my other piece of advice is do not stay at Mandapa under really any circumstances. I tried both of them and the Aman makes me feel like I understand understated luxury and Mandapa makes me feel sad, like I’ve been some bad food.

Amandari is set out in the style of a village and it was very peaceful just strolling in the grounds. Our room was a Pool Suite (15) and we had a beautiful view over the valley from our pool. The living area of the room was very bright and spacious, we loved it. The bedroom was upstairs and whilst very simple in design was comfortable. The room was immaculately clean and had been refreshed every time we came back to it. The staff everywhere were very polite and friendly. When we were there the hotel appeared very quiet but this could be a result of guests staying in their lovely suites as we did! We enjoyed massages at the spa and wished we had booked more. Why only four stars? We felt that a few areas seemed tired and in need of upgrading or repairs. Amandari is expensive and we were surprised that the large sliding doors in our suite were rickety and hard to open and close easily. I sometimes felt that they could fall off. The bathrooms were tired and the bar area was really dated. Some of this may seem picky but at the price we would have expected better. The sliding doors were very poor. I think we had really high expectations of Amandari and whilst we enjoyed our stay it didn’t quite live up those expectations.

I visited their bar for afternoon tea, unfortunately their beverages choice is not what I expected to be. However since they offered to move to their restaurant for more selection of menu and better view. And I am no regreting at all spend my evening here, the foods is spectacular especially the quinoa salad, and I don't even know why even their welcome bread is amazing. I personally wouldn't couldn't shouldn't talked about the scenery, come see for youself.

The beautiful grounds and the courtyard garden of our “valley suite” were full of aged stonework - walls, path, little shrines and statues - giving a rather ancient feel as a complete contrast to the sleek, elegant interior of our suite. Fabulous, spacious suite with marble floor, comfortable bed, dressing area with 2 basins, indoor shower and outdoor sunken bath. A big bowl of fresh fruit was kept topped up each day, homemade cookies and savoury crackers, coffee machine with fresh milk in the fridge, plenty of drinking water, a delightful little locally made present on the bed each night. The staff were all very helpful and efficient, they knew our names straight away and the restaurant staff always remembered my husbands food allergy. The food was delicious particularly the traditional Balinese feast we ordered one evening. A soothing, relaxing haven from the busyness of Ubud and the awful traffic!

We loved our stay at Amandari, as part of our honeymoon. The staff are excellent - very friendly and helpful. Each night a lovely gift was placed on our pillow. The tennis court is the best we have played on - with a very friendly staff member to help out. The pool and restaurant are fantastic. It was also very helpful having a free shuttle service into Ubud. Can’t wait to return!

No doubt your Instagram feed has shown you shots of sexy girls in infinity pools in an outrageously cool hotel amongst the rice fields of Ubud. Yes some of them are quite stunning but this is the original. And I'm willing to bet a week's worth of stay at any of them that they do not match the level of service and attention that this place, one of the original Amans, has. Was upgraded to room with rice terrace views and it did not disappoint. The bungalow type room is huge with a tall roof. The multiple openings from the rice field balcony to the private tub to the yoga area makes this room blend right into its surrounding, you feel immersed in nature. The service is classic Aman service where everyone (and I mean EVERYONE in the staff) has studied the guest list and knows you by face and name and is familiar with your preferences. I did something outrageous when I visited in July. Even though I was in Bali, I really really wanted to the Kiwah Ijen volcano in Java that spews blue sulfur flames because I'm such a nature geek. It's a ridiculously complicated side trip that involves taking a car out to the western coast of Bali, taking a ferry to Java, then driving to the mountain before starting the hike at 1am. The staff here must have thought I was crazy and for my 2 nights stay, everyone I ran int0 - from all the front desk workers, to the GM to even the waiters at the restaurant would eagerly ask me how my hike went. I felt like a movie star with that many strangers recognizing me and knowing everything about me. For all its stunning beauty, the value of Aman hotels lie in the amazing staff that pamper you like royalty. On my last day, I asked for a late check out because I wanted to do some more sight seeing. They were unable to extend my room because another guest was arriving so instead they put me in a room with a private pool!! When I go back I will definitely book one of these rooms. Thank you Amandari for such an amazing time.
