We booked this weekend to Kilwa for a hefty price but unfortunately the quality of what we received was nothing equal to expectations. Rooms were clean but lacked freshness and repairs here and there(locks/netting/flooring...). We were in the Dhow house. The two trips we did were expensive for what we received in return. A poorly informed guide who merely showed us the way and took us around but did not expose us to any valuable historical content. The food on the day trip was minimal and simple. We were also disturbed by another group of young people who were playing loud music and kind of gave the “I own the place” attitude! Conversely, we were all amazed by the attitude and devotion of the staff at Kilwa. Hassan and his team are reliable, serious and supportive. Thumbs up to them and we really hope that for their own good, this place can live to its expectations again. Oh! If you book a driver for the trip be sure you clarify expectations beforehand. Take time to enjoy the peaceful early mornings amidst nature.

We stayed for 2 nights, and fell in love with Mwangaza and Kilwa! Hassan and Eddie took such great care of us, and arranged all of our Kilwa trips which were fabulous. We did the sunset dhow cruise and day boat tour to the ruins - both amazing! The food was lovely, and it was a nice intimate environment to meet the other guests staying there. Couldn't recommend enough!

Kilwa is one of Tanzania's hidden gems and the Mwangaza Hideaway is the perfect peaceful spot from which to explore it. The rooms are airy and comfortable, set in the bush, the staff friendly, and the breakfast delicious. We explored the ruins and spent the day on the Lala Salaam boat, all easily organised by our hosts and making for a memorable long weekend.

Spent 4 great nights in one of Mangwaza's lovely bandas while in Kilwa with a group of friends. We enjoyed two fabulous days on the Mwangaza boats, including great snorkelling, swimming in the turquoise waters, and exploring a deserted white sand island. The management arranged our tour of the incredible ancient Kilwa ruins, including transportation across to and from the island. The meals were excellent, whether straight from the kitchen, or served on the boat, and included the best seafood curry I've ever tasted! We had a very successful morning fishing for wahoo with their skillful fishing guide, after which the staff creatively served up a feast of various versions of this delicious fish for our lunch! I highly recommend the Slow Leopard Mwangaza: the Bandas are classy and very clean, the beds are great, as are the ceiling fans and mosquito nets. Lovely refreshing pool, and friendly management and staff. Great shady common area by the pool to enjoy a cold beer while watching the sunset or enjoying your morning coffee.

Room Tip: All the bandas face West, and are spread out just enough to provide privacy.

Our 2 and 5 year olds loved it. The staff were incredibly friendly with them and the pool was the perfect set up for them to splash around (both kids could stand in the shallow end and the deep end has a ledge going all the way around it--so it's great for newer swimmers). One of my sons has a food allergy and they were incredibly helpful and accommodating of it. Unlike most similar lodges we've stayed at around the country, they have 24 hour electricity--always a plus. You won't go wrong with this place.
