What a gem of a place with perfect hosts Christine is a diamond not only providing an excellent breakfast for 2 hungry fishermen, yes there is more to the area than cycling and walking some great fishing on pristine rivers is to be had within a few miles of the B&B. There are drying facilities off road parking, and not...

A lovely haven for cyclists and walkers on a Hadrian's Wall trail. Very friendly and helpful hosts with those little added extras that make a good Band B great: breakfast choices included freshly made pancakes with freshly picked, blackberries and creme fraiche, there is a drying room, the offer of laundry, a view, a very quiet night's sleep, and did...

We visited the Old School House amid a whirlwind of train rides across England and France. Our visit to Hallbankgate was both a trip highlight and a peaceful retreat. Chris and Pete are knowledgeable, kind and generous hosts: - Securing bike rentals so that we could explore the area, including Hadrian’s Wall. - Providing first aid when Josh lingered amongst...

Christine and Peter are excellent hosts, and such interesting people - we could have stayed much longer! We've stayed in lots of places where everything was great - but here, everything was special -...

We had a great time staying for 6 nights while walking Hadrian's Wall. The b&b was nicely situated, not too far from the wall, but perfect for doing several days of walking.Breakfasts were super, with lots of fresh fruits. Christine and Peter are excellent hosts!! We certainly would like to return one day... Paul &Jeanet from Emst, the Netherlands

This is a wonderful B&B - spacious, clean and comfy room, excellent breakfast including lots of home-made and local high quality produce. Christine is a very friendly and helpful host and there is a pub nearby serving good evening meals. A great place to stop on our bike ride from Lands End to John O'Groats. Thoroughly recommended!

My wife and I stayed at the Old School House in late October 2013. We were looking for a place that was convenient to some of the more well-known parts of Hadrian's Wall, and this particular place came up in our internet search. Our host, Christine, was most accommodating when we first contacted her on the phone; we were going...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Old School House is a 200 year old cottage in the village of Hallbankgate in Cumbria. It is in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the end of the Pennine hills and close to the Scottish border. The village itself is steeped in history and was the home of Stephenson’s Rocket which ended its working days here. There are many places of interest to visit in the area. Hadrian’s Wall is 10 minutes drive away and the impressive twelfth century Lanercost Priory is just down the road. We have miles of stunning fellside scenery and many grand and lonely walks. The RSPB Geltsdale reserve is one mile from Hallbankgate and has a network of walks where a wide variety of birds can be seen including the rare black grouse which is now thriving in the area. The border city of Carlisle is about 13 miles away and is an exciting city with a beautiful cathedral, castle and an award winning museum – Tullie House. It is also a great place to shop!We are close to Talkin Tarn which is a tranquil and pretty place – ideal for an evening stroll. The river Gelt is also nearby and provides a beautiful tree lined walk along its banks. The Old School House is comfortable and warm with two large en suite bedrooms. We provide a substantial cooked breakfast with our own home made bread and preserves and eggs from our own very happy hens!We look forward to welcoming you!! ... more   less
