Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Duke of Gordon Hotel offers a stay that receives mixed reviews, where some guests find the rooms clean and comfortable, especially appreciating the refurbished bathrooms. However, others suggest that certain areas require more attention to cleanliness and updating. While the hotel's historical charm adds to the atmosphere, opinions vary, with some finding the decor tacky or the ambiance uninviting.
The staff often earn praise for their friendliness, but there's inconsistency in service quality, with some guests facing slow responses. Amenities and value perception are similarly split, with friendly staff highlighted but some dining experiences falling short.

Detailed Reviews
This is a lovely, traditional hotel. Very Scottish! We went there the first weekend in September. It was my first trip away from home after months of being shielded because of my health. From the moment we arrived, my anxieties diminished. At the hotel entrance, there was a hand sanitizer dispenser. Similar dispensers were in evidence throughout the hotel, including outside the restaurant. Staff wore masks and we were required to wear them when we moved around the hotel, which operated a one way system. At reception our temperature was taken and we were given our room key and an infiormation leaflet and verbal advice.
Our room was on the ground floor and double aspect. It was beautifully appointed. The large, walk in shower tray and wash room facilities were clean and modern. There was even a bottle of hand sanitizer left in our room for us to use throughout our stay. There was a tray with kettle and two disposable cups. We could order tea, coffee, milk and sugar from reception, as required. It was delivered to our room and placed outside in a paper bag. Staff did not enter our room unless we requested it and we would then have to vacate the room while it was serviced.
Friends from England were spending a week at the hotel and they had recommended it to us. Staff were sensitive to the fact that we were from two separate households. We were able to join them in the restaurant for meals by sitting two metres apart at a large table. We were given separate coffee pots, milk jugs etc. Staff are well trained to deal with the restrictions that this virus places upon us.
Overall, it was a great stay, relaxing and safe. I can't wait to return.

I have been visiting the Duke of Gordon for over 15 - 20 years, and have stayed there 5 or 6 times during this period.
After our summer European trip was cancelled, we decided to go back to the Highlands and reached out to the Duke of Gordon who did us a great deal on Room, Breakfast and Dinner.
I was quite sceptical about staying in a hotel at first (given Covid), but the wife convinced me, so the 4 of us (2 kids - 7 and 10) headed up to the Highlands for 5 nights in early August.
The hotel clearly hadn’t been open very long as the staff were still getting use to protocols, layout etc however we could quickly see that the team were making every effort to adhere to social distancing, using PPE, directing “one way” traffic in busy areas and offering Hand Sanitiser at every opportunity,
On the first day, breakfast service was very slow and at the end of the meal the server came up and apologised for the delay, which did give me the fear that it would be like that every breakfast, however the following day (and for the next 4 days) there were no complaints about service and meals were provided in a timely manner.
A tough time for all hospitality businesses at the moment but myself, wife and kids all felt safe at The Duke of Gordon and very welcome, as always.
We are looking forward to returning again. Well done to the whole team!

We stayed here for 4 days just before and after our wedding. We were met by receptionist Jill who made us very welcome and explained all the Covid restrictions very well. We told her we were getting married the following day and she gave us a larger room which was wonderful as we had so much stuff!
That evening when we went to dinner, there were flowers in a vase on our table that we could then take to our room that she had arranged. The day of our wedding the girls at the reception gave us lots of luck and when we returned, the bar staff had cordoned off an area of the conservatory for our post wedding lunch. Again with the Covid restrictions, they did so well to organise 6 of us on 3 tables but nice and private so we could still hold a conversation.
The chef came through and presented us with the most amazing profiterole and white chocolate mousse cake. It's not often I'm speechless! What a wonderful thing to do.
We ate twice in the restaurant and twice in the bar and could fault nothing. Over the weekend the Covid restrictions kicked in that there was no self service so breakfast was all table service. The staff were fantastic and did so well. We were disappointed to hear one old gentleman complain to the waitress that he had been given too much! I'm quite sure there would have been far more complaints had there not been enough.
All of the staff were incredibly friendly, thorough and welcoming.
We were also a little annoyed by another elderly gentleman who was complaining at reception that the room had not been serviced. It was made quite clear at check in that this wasn't being done and we were given a checklist to fill in and return should there be anything at all that we required.
I could highly recommend a stay here. In these unprecedented times, they are doing a fantastic job with a smile.

This hotel is in a lovely setting and the view from our room was amazing. The bed was huge and comfy. The choice of food and quality of food was good.
BUT from the mo.ent we arrived in our room we could hear a noise a low humming sound whi h happened every four seconds believe me we counted. The noise sounded like a macerator toilet being flushed, was there day and night. When anyone complained about the noise the hotel switched off what we found to be the water pumps leading to no water for our shower and very low water pressure in the taps. As we had no water in the shower and had no hot water in our sink for the whole of our stay we were having to boil the kettle for strip washes. When we complained at reception we were told that it was impossible for us to have neither water in the shower or hot water in the sink.
The hotel advertises walk in showers which we did not have and There was no handle to help you get safely in and out. There was no hairdryer in the room either as per the hotel website.
Also if you are not fully fit then please be aware that the lift does not go to floor three and the stairs to the floor are steep.

We did a 'self drive', (travelled by train from Yorkshire), holiday with Cairngorm Travel to this charming Highland hotel and my sister, brother in law and myself thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the warm welcome that we received from Jill was a great sign of things to come.
Having a mobility problem I had requested no stairs and a walk in shower and my ground floor room, 2, exceeded all of my expectations. My room was spacious and the bathroom with shower was magnificent.
Cleanliness is obviously of paramount importance to us all, and Shirley and the rest of the housekeeping team continually maintained extremely high standards throughout the hotel.
All meals were well cooked and enjoyable and the service was excellent from the well trained and conscientious staff. We shared our table with some lovely folk from Merseyside and all mixed very well, special mention to Alan and Carol from Moreton who even laughed at my jokes!
Evening entertainment was good fun with lots of familiar old songs to sing along to and a Saturday night local 'Shinty Presentation' looked like great fun for the young and the not so young. The 'Ghillies Rest' bar also proved very popular and was comfortable and very well staffed.
As is often the case our time in Kingussie proved much too short, but I've no doubt that we'll be back and we offer our thanks for the hospitality and send our best wishes to all of the staff.

Staying at the Duke is like belonging to a Club, in that you are made to feel like an honoured guest even though it's all done on a strict budget!
The hotel is warm and welcoming, with a relaxed atmosphere. This must be due to the manager and staff who are always busy but well organised and efficient. It was a particularly nice touch to be greeted on our coach on arrival, and waved off on departure.
Our room was on the top floor with a view over the Memorial Gardens and looking towards the mountains. The room was a good size with super-king sized bed which was very comfortable - so much so, that on one morning we were late for breakfast!
Talking of food, the evening meals were excellent, with plenty of choice.
We only did one organised trip out, to see Stirling Castle, which was so interesting. On other days we strolled round the village and to the historic ruin of Ruthven Barracks, and took the train (less than 5 mins walk to the station) to Inverness.
Of course, the fine weather helped, and we had a very enjoyable, relaxing week. Hopefully we'll be back before long.

Anyone looking for a good value winter break away from home should look no further than the Duke of Gordon Hotel in Kingussie. Every member of staff was pleasant and helpful and the coach trips well organised and varied. The rooms are warm, comfortable and suitably equipped and the food was plentiful, excellent and with good menu choices. Excellent value for money. As a solo traveller I booked the trip through Cairngorm Travel and I’m delighted to say the single room supplement was fair and reasonable and it’s not often you can say that. Well done to all.

Duke of Gordon hotel is a very big place but the helpful, friendly staff and the wonderfully warm rooms and the real wood fire burning in the reception area make this hotel a cosy and homely place.
The room I had was exactly whst I asked for: warm, quiet and with a bath tub and shower. It had everything I needed from tea making facilities to a hair dryer and the radiators could be turned up or down as I preferred.
Breakfast was also good and I choose to have it in my room on a tray to avoid being with other people (covid), even if the dining room was spacious and social distancing was being enforced.
The staff were all friendly, discrete but always ready to help with any of my problems such as printing off documents for travelling that I needed when new restrictions were introduced just before I flew out.
I left very early on my last day and I was given a packed lunch in place if the breakfast I missed.
I would definitely stay at the D of G hotel again and look forward to it. Last but not least is the price per night. £45 is excellent value for money and definitely one of the reasons I chose to stay there but it also proved to be an excellent service and a real pleasure too. Thank you.

We arrived at the Duke of Gordon on 25/08. Beautiful building, well kept gardens. A good first impression. We then headed for check in. Very friendly lady behind the desk checked us in. Very nice room and bathroom. On booking we opted for the 4 course dinner option @ £15 / person / night. On looking at the sample menu this looked to be an excellent option. (Boy were we wrong). The main restaurant was closed. A small restaurant attached to the bar at the front of the hotel was being used as there were so few guests in the hotel. We arrived at the restaurant and were shown to a table. The menu (no 4 course dinner menu) for bar meals. We selected this hotel on the strength of its dinner and breakfast menus as my wife has a restrictive diet due to surgery. There was nothing suitable on the menu. The waiter phoned the kitchen and she was offered garlic mushrooms or pasta with tomato sauce. A far cry from the four course sample menu displayed when booking. We decided not to eat at the hotel. We spoke to a different lady on reception again she was very pleasant and helpful. We attempted to speak to the duty manager (not on site) . The lady on reception managed to contact him and told us we could leave without any charge We have since discovered that both the manager and the chef have recently left this hotel. (Staycation?? Never ever again). The hotel however should not advertise what it either can’t or won’t provide. Suffice to say we will not be making a return visit.

Dear robert b Thank you for taking the time to provide some feedback regarding your recent stay with us.I was glad to hear that you had a good first impression of the hotel and that your welcome and check in was good. I also understand your comments regarding the difference in menu choice during your stay. We have had to make a few changes to our normal operating procedures recently as im sure you can understand but we do however try to accommodate all of our guests requirements and expectations. We are happy to offer different choices and help with diet requirements and appreciate advance notice so we can ensure we have the appropriate menu items in stock to make this happen. We did not know that your wife was a vegan on booking it was flagged as a vegetarian who will eat fish. The different choices you were offered on the day was with the items we had available at the time. Our chef has many Vegan options but need to know in advance to prepare the dishes. We are looking at our website to adjust the sample menus displayed here so as to accurately depict what is on offer so a informed decision can be made. I would welcome a call from you to discuss your review in order to restore your confidence in our property. Please ask for Gordon

Stayed here for 4 nights with a group from Glossop travelling with Cairngorm Travel. The hotel was very welcoming and well used to large groups. Our room numbers were given out on arrival with a greeting from the manager and the keys were in the lock and our bags were brought up to the room. Our room was excellent with views, a large bathroom and plenty of space. The food was homely with a good choice and efficiently served by pleasant staff. A very enjoyable break made possible by good facilities, pleasant and helpful staff and very efficient organisation. A special mention to our driver Steve who was wonderful.
