We stayed for one night but wish it had been for more. We were made very welcome and the owner was very accommodating when we made some special requests. Our room (4)was a very good size, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. The location is perfect for visiting the city center. The only possible downside was the on street parking...

Castle View is very well located on a quaint street about halfway between the centre of town and the railway station (I travelled by train so that worked well for me). My room was spacious, tastefully furnished, perfectly clean and comfortable. My stay was brief so I didn't spend much time talking to the proprietors, but I was courteously received....

Lovely weekend in extremely comfortable room (Room 7 as it happens) with a helpful owner and wonderful good quality breakfasts provided by a friendly cook. Very close to the centre. Warm and quiet. This is a well-appointed guest house to stay in, and you can come and go at any time. Recommended.

3 storey end-of-terrace property next to church just outside the city's commercial centre. On arrival I was handed my keys in a not particularly welcoming manner, conversation merely consisting of having the dining room pointed out, time of breakfast confirmed and the location of my room (room 7) on the second floor explained, so I had a bit of a...

This was my second stay at Castle View, this time to break a journey to Edinburgh, so I only stayed one night. It's a while since I stayed but the standard of this guesthouse is still excellent. I had a corner room with views of Durham castle. The room was large - larger than an average hotel room, with a...

Really nice to see you again Julianne. And glad you enjoyed your trip to Edinburgh.

Booked Castle View as it was in town but beware pouncing traffic wardens and make sure you fill in your parking permit correctly or else you will get a ticket which happened to me after I had a menopausal moment and forget to put the time on! However, back to the accommodation, nice room, bed was very comfy and shower...

We did our best to be pleasant to this rude lady - whether she was menopausal or not (as she says ) is no excuse for bad behaviour. She snatched the parking permit from my wife's hand impatiently insisting she would fill it in herself. I resent her remarks about the guesthouse- you can see from our website that this...

Stayed here for two nights last weekend what a great place. It is keep spotlessly clean. The staff are very friendly and the breakfast excellent. The room we were in (7) was so spacious and bright and the beds and pillows comfortable. Very good situation for the castle and cathedral, rather a steep hill to climb but good excercise for...

The Hotel was just great and the breakfast almost too much ! My room was very clean and modern, with LED lighting and a new en suite. Parking was by permit and right outside the Hotel. Being in sight of the Cathedral meant that it was really easy to access any part of the Old City, whilst Crossgate itself, led...

A lovely review- much appreciated. Cul de sac parking makes all the difference doesn't it.

From the moment we were greeted, we knew we had picked the right place. We parked on street with a parking permit we were given. No problems with parking at all. The room was clean and modern with a king sized bed, tea and coffee making, lots of storage space and the bathroom was modern with a double shower. Lovely...

Friends who lived in Durham recommended the Castle View as the best place to stay in town and we were not disappointed. From the very warm welcome of our hosts to our delightful room, we were completely charmed. The decor was somewhat modern and the bath had recently been renovated (with glorious water pressure) in a luxurious style, but had...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
17 century English Heritage Listed Building with origins going back to the 14th century - restored and decorated to the highest standards.6 en-suite rooms - 2 with views of castle and cathedral the others looking over the historic street of Crossgate - one of the medieval routes where the ancient road from England to Scotland forded the River Wear and on which the city was originally founded - this unprepossessing street predates the castle and cathedral. The house is the closest residential property of all to the town centre and is only a few minutes walk from the castle and cathedral , the historic centre , shopping streets and restaurants. This can mean that the street is sometimes lively and noisy at night usually at weekends due to the fact that we are a prestigious university city with many boisterous young people out and about. We do however have double glazing and the highest quality beds to help you have a goodnight sleep before a full English breakfast cooked fresh to order with cereals , juices , and freshly cut fruit salad. ... more   less
