Stayed here for 4 nights over Christmas. The reception staff were very accommodating when we asked to change from a twin- to double bedded room. Housekeeping was at a minimum level (no room cleaning or towel changing) but the advertised system was kept to and worked well. Additional tea/coffee stocks were delivered in a paper bag every morning. If the waste bin was full, we had to tie it and leave it outside the door and it was collected. Any towel replacements were dealt with the same way. It meant that our room was as Covid safe as it could be so well done. The restaurant staff were friendly but lacked something we cannot put our finger on. The food was not always piping hot but there was PLENTY of it and it was served quickly. On the last morning, the whole of our coach party had the feeling that they were trying to get us out as quickly as possible - perhaps they were as our home county had moved to Tier 4 whilst we were away!! The entertainment was on the limp side and the hotel did not use its facilities to the best. For instance, we were all socially distanced in the restaurant and could have participated in a quiz or bingo session sitting at our tables. The building itself is impressive although it is in need of some serious TLC in certain parts (eg ceilings need repainting after what looked like a water problem). Christmas decorations were good and the open fire in the bar area gave a homely feeling. The local area was bleak and would probably be better visited in the summer - although we suspect that it will be packed. It wasn't when we were there - wonder why??!! All in all, would probably go back there when this Covid-19 is behind us.…
What a lovely hotel. The staff, grounds, facilities all brilliant, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Checked in and was offered coffee and biscuits in the lounge. Our evening meal was delicious and then a hearty breakfast to start the following day. The room was very comfortable and we had a very good night sleep in our amazingly large bed. Would highly recommend.
Well what can I say? Cannot thank you all enough for all you did to make our time with you today, so very special. After an awful year, we really didn't think we would get to see Santa. But you pulled out all the stops to put on such a special event. From organising a lovely woodland elf trail, to feeding the Alpacas to serving up the best Afternoon Tea I have ever had. Then to top it all, a very well organised socially distanced visit from Santa. We have been to many Santa events over the years, but this one was simply the best. Thank you all so very much for working so hard to make this event happen, and make us all feel so welcome. Cannot wait to return next year. All the very best to all the staff at the Cumbria Grand.
Such a shame, lovely hotel trying its best. Room upgrade beautiful and dogs welcome but we did dinner bed and brekky, that’s where it all went wrong. The food is atrocious, maybe because the lack of demand or restrictions but breakfast dry and if you choose bag drop, you get cereal and a Mars bar. We had dinner three nights.. garlic mushrooms was tasty but consisted of 2 mushrooms finely sliced, strawberry meringue had just one strawberry and sea bass fillet looked like a fish with a close shave. Boris has a lot to answer for, this town and hotel are crippled by the cure being worse than the disease... so very sorry for the staff trying but won’t stay again
We were attracted to the hotel because it is dog friendly and wanted a base for exploring The Lakes. Dogs were really well accommodated. Everything is what you would expect from a 3* hotel. Bit of updating needed, but the food was excellent and better than the hotel's overall status.
