This convent is very special! They invested a lot of money to restore it. It's really amazing! Wonderfull wooden ceilings, nice restaurant, rooms are quite simple but very authentic. We liked this place very much. Prices also ok! We recommend.
We had the misfortune to visit this place whilst on Viking River Cruise as part of one of their pre arranged excursions.

After reading several reviews about the hotel's meals, I decided to skip this trip sponsored by Viking River Cruise. I'm grateful that my husband talked me into going. Every course was delicious. And, the red wine was very good. The monastery was beautiful. The Fado...More
We were part of a group tour booked into the convent for dinner on a bleak, cold, wet December night. After traveling a short distance above the Douro River, we arrived and were directed through the long, long hallways filled with items collected by the...More

The history is available on some documents posted on the web, but I cannot include links in my answer. The rooms that I saw were not good. I saw three and they all were small, with old furniture and smelling musty. Bathrooms are even worse, with old plumbing, cracked tiles, toilets that don't flush, etc... I visited in summer and air conditioning did not work. However, the building itself is worth a visit, the view is amazing and the food very good.
