Booked Superior Sea View rooms with balcony at extortionate prices and expected to have a "Wow" weekend. The website is deceptive and promises a top notch hotel, in a top notch location, with top notch service. The one star is the location and the view but a hotel cannot survive on that. The rooms are variable in size, some of the balconies are small and shared with other rooms. The rooms are not individually styled and the small rooms are packed with oversized furniture so you can't move. The place is dirty, the staff need a serious training package in looking after the guests (thats what pays the place to stay open after all). It seems there is a serious lack of staff in all areas except for the reception desk where they hang around gossiping. They suggest they are doing extra for Covid cleaning but they aren't even doing the basics, this is in the rooms, in the restaurant and bar area. Some of the staff are really friendly and doing their best so I don't want to tar everyone with the same brush but many are sullen and rude. The wait between courses in the restaurant is far too long, about 45 mins between starter and main and then they delivered the wrong thing for one of us so 3 ate while one waited for a replacement. The table next to us sent theirs back because it was cold, one table walked out after waiting so long after their starter. Service at breakfast is miserable and things are pretty much thrown on the table, no happy faces wishing you a nice day. Service charge is added to everything without it being marked on the menu or anybody telling you they are doing so, you need to be very aware of this. We got it removed from everything when we checked out. Have written to the hotel itself and Harbour Hotels HQ so this review will not come as a surprise. Priced as a luxury hotel, which it could be, but it is not…
The Sidmouth Harbour has always been excellent, and still is. The service is courteous and friendly and the food delicious. We went once as a couple and again as a group and enjoyed both occasions very much.
Lovely hotel, lots to commend but a few niggles. We took 2 rooms, were charged the same for both rooms. One room was much larger and more modern than the other, which had paint peeling in the bathroom. We paid extra for an evening meal on Sunday, asked what was included. When checking out was billed regardless. Shame that poor communication between reception, restaurant and manager left an unfortunate impression. As stated earlier, very nice gestures on arrival, a glass of bubbly, complimentary sherry & gin in our rooms (didn't have this stay). Staff are very pleasant, meals were very enjoyable. Won't put us off, let's hope this was a small hiccup.
The room was superb! We stayed in a courtyard room & I really wish I had asked for a room on the 1st floor. All we could hear was upstairs stomping around & was woken up at 6am by them stomping around again. Like others have said, it’s not quite what I expected being a “courtyard room”. It’s like a motel around the car park. The hotel itself was lovely & everyone was very polite. Breakfast was great.
Like most people , my husband & I have not been away for two years. We booked a two night break here from 8th - 10th October. We were concerned about a few negative reviews before we left but were delighted to find that the hotel is well run and staff made every effort to make our stay as good as possible. Our room was amazing ! Everything we could need was there and we slept so well in the wonderful bed. Breakfast was delicious and what a pleasure it was to eat breakfast looking a the lovely view. I enjoyed the facilities in the Spa and even swam in the outside pool which was heated . We are going back in a few weeks as we enjoyed it so much ! Many thanks from the Glintenkamps.
