The Royal Hotel offers good value and a touch of historical charm, appealing to guests who appreciate its reasonable prices and prime location near the beach and town center. Reviewers have mixed opinions on the atmosphere, with some charmed by its eccentricities, while others suggest it needs a revamp. The rooms receive varied feedback; they are often found to be spacious but sometimes fall short in cleanliness and modernity. Guests commend the friendly staff but note some organizational issues, and while the amenities are appreciated, many suggest they could benefit from an update.

The hotel is quite dated, but given its age, it adds to its character. We had a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the back car park & despite needing to sleep with the window open, there was very little noise.
We were welcomed by a very nice gentleman on reception who informed us on how their hotel works regarding breakfast times, housekeeping etc & provided us with a print out for replacing towels tea, milk, coffee etc. The bed is made daily & the bins emptied, but other than that, you need to ask. As this is an older hotel, not like the modern ones, this was not a problem to us. The breakfast was lovely, with a choice of hot food buffet style, always replenished & nice & hot. A variety of cereals, juice, yoghurt & fruit (presumably tinned & 2 choices only). You helped yourself to tea & coffee as much as you liked. The waiting staff are quick to clear any dirty plates etc & when a table has been vacated, they are quick to set it up again. Breakfast is between 8am & 9.30am only. We always ate at 8.30 & never had a problem with seating. We didn't dine there in the evening or see any of the occasional entertainment, so we can not comment on them. On check out, the young woman who took our key from us was pleasant & courteous & wished us a good day. You can't fault the staff here as they are friendly & helpful, but the eccentricity of the hotel might not be for everyone. My only gripe is that despite this being described as a seaview hotel, we couldn't see anything, so I assume you need to be on the top floor, facing the seafront to get the view! The seafront road ends at this hotel with a car park where the large garden is shown on the website, but there is another car at the back where we were in which you accessed it by going down the side of Barbara Road. The hotel is situated not too far from the clock tower & all the main attractions. So ideal for the fair, beach & amusements.

We stayed at this hotel last week and it was good. It's in a great location, which is walking distance to the beachfront and centre.
Breakfast at this hotel was nice and hot. It's a buffet breakfast with your full English breakfast and a selection of cereals. There were also yoghurts and juices available. There are evening meals available and a Sunday carvery, but we never had one.
Rooms were nice and clean. We had a sea view from our room which was nice. On arrival, we got given a piece of paper which stated that housekeeping only cleans the room once a week on a Wednesday. If you needed any towels in the meantime to change them at reception. We weren't there long enough for this to become a problem. There is a hairdryer available, but you have to go to the reception and ask for it. There's a £5 deposit that is returned. There's a kettle in the room and a generous amount of milk, teas, and coffee sachets. If more needed, then they are available at reception.

Overall, we had a good stay at this hotel.

I had a lovely time on holiday late last year on a 4 night coach holiday. My mobility is not good so I took a class 1 mobility scooter, and was a bit worried about leaving it outside/where to charge the battery, as scooters are not allowed in the lift. I need not have worried. There is a small hallway just in the main entrance with 2 power points for charging scooters, but best to ask first if you are taking one. All of the staff were lovely and answered any questions I had. The food, well it wasn't the best but I was very impressed with the self service breakfast buffet. On the last night we all treated ourselves to an evening meal at their restaurant, and that meal was outstanding and for the sake on an extra £22 was well worth the money. I paid a very small single supplement and expected a tiny room overlooking the car park, but I was given a large double room over looking the sea, beautiful. The furniture and carpets were a little worn in many area's of the hotel, but I am sure that they will be refreshed shortly. Overall a very nice stay and I will be back in the future. If you wanted to hire a mobility scooter for the day the hotel will give you a local number.

This is our second visit to the Royal Hotel. The hotel has a large, comfortable lounge with a long well stocked bar also serving coffee/tea. There is a games room, a second smaller lounge, a restaurant and ballroom with some evening entertainment. Close to the sea the gardens are very pleasant with spacious car parking front and rear. It is a short walk from the hotel to the clock tower and main attractions (under 10 minutes). We stayed in a very spacious room which had an equally specious en suite bathroom with bath and a separate, full size shower cabinet. The room was well serviced every day. Prices are very reasonable and yes the hotel is dated but the hotel retains its elegance and we had another most enjoyable break. I would like to thank all the staff for looking after us so well, especially in the restaurant together with a very special thank you to Treena on Reception who made our stay complete and could not do enough for us.
We will return.

We visited the hotel for the eveing to drink in the bar and the garden

Very warm welcome , beautifully eccentric decor steeped in glitz and glamour with decorative chandeliers and an amazing model boat in the porch

The furniture in the bar area was comfortable , although a little “tired” in wear

The garden lovely

Board games available to play

The bar staff were pleasant, but didn’t know how to make cocktails . However they were very obliging and made what we asked for … not the cheapest Baby Guinness I’ve had !! But it was very nice of them to make what we asked for , and we had some fun finding 4 matching glasses !

The atmosphere was friendly and inclusive

We had such a lovely evening we decided to book for Sunday carvery the following day

We were not disappointed. Clearly very popular , as busy , not many bar staff on duty

The cost of the carvery was £9.95 per head , and wow it didn’t disappoint !

Lots of meat and plenty of veg choice . Again very friendly service

Desserts were available at extra cost , but very reasonable £4.50 for a large portion or £2.50 for a mini portion , which many had a sample of several

We were completely stuffed from our main course . But clearly a very popular choice at an excellent price

Well worth a visit for great friendly service and good value food

The building is very old, but stunning, the grounds have been beautifully kept and well tended to.
The inside has furniture made to suit the age of the building, however the carpets and curtains needs to be replaced.
They are so worn and a trip hazard, going by the age of the clientele, it was most concerning.
The room we were occupying was clean but very dated, sadly there were issues-: 1) the basin had a large crack in it. 2) there was a lot of scum in the basin, from lack of cleaning, 3) the bath has a chip out of the enamel, 4) the grouting just above the bath needs a good clean there were black blobs along the grouting line. The en-suite door squeaks when opening and closing, not a big issue in itself, but most annoying during the nighttime when occupants are asleep and the bathroom needs to be used.

On the plus side for our room, there were ample teas, coffee, sugars and milk.
The staff were courteous at all times, giving that they were working in an outdated hotel. There is plenty of car parking spaces, at the front and back of the hotel, the walk into town was a leisurely 10 minutes stroll.
Plenty of eateries to enjoy a good meal, for a special meal Tarantino’s won’t disappoint you.

Arriving at the hotel the young receptionist wasn't welcoming No smile No information given.
No where to sit to have a drink.
Went to our room it had just enough room for 2 single beds and 2 small bedside tables No space between.
The beds rocked and banged on the wall when we sat down.
We were moved to another room after I explaind about the broken beds.
The room was bigger but we were near the kitchens the fans kept us awake allnight.
Went for breakfast our time was 9.15 - 9.30
We went at 5 past 9..
Only 2 not good sausages, 2 pieces of undercooked bacon Eggs, beans and tomatos left!!!!!!
We just had cereals.
The toast cooked 1 side.
O/J was ok.
The teapot lid was strained and tea poured over our table.
We left very disappointed could be a nice place although needs work and attention to detail.
We went elswhere and had breakfast.
The young receptionist still not helpfull the next morning when I mentioned breakfast.
She said she would mention it to the kitchen
I left a ring on the dressing table rang up and they said it wasnt there.

I work in hospitality and know how it should be!!!!

Went for the skegy reggae festival and stayed in the hotel . I booked the hotel as soon as the festival was advertised and asked for a room facing the festival .the day before we went I call the hotel to ask when check in was and was told 3pm but I could probably check in a little earlier. Travelled there got to the hotel around 1.30 pm and asked if it would be possible to check in early as I'd been advised on the phone and I was feeling ill, the receptionist who was called treena was very abrupt and rude attitude I was told a point blank NO nothing I can do so I sat down then I went to ask if my room would be facing the festival she asked my number and was told again NO I said is it possible to swap for one facing the festival no nothing I can do and didn't hardly look at me carried on with her work . I sat down again so my daughter went up as I had told her and said my mum is upset she's feeling ill she was told she could go in the room early and she also booked a room facing the festival she looked at the booking and said point blank look there's nothing on there saying that and I can't give you what I havnt got .
This same receptionist was seen by us shouting at guests trying to go in the toilet and generally being rude to everyone I think you need to have customer service training . Anyway got to our room and instead of facing the festival it was facing a brick wall with 2 vents I think from the kitchen or something buzzing loudly all night .
The breakfast was limited and not really good especially the sausage which was disgusting.
Now I know it was festival weekend however wouldn't you put portal's on as well as the hotel loos queuing all the way from the toilet for miles blocking all the corridor and pathways was ridiculous and queuing all the way around the lounge for drinks at the bar with just 2-3 bar staff on at a festival with thousands of people and a beet costing £6 a drink .. really .. the rooms are overpriced enough for what they are as it is at £100 per night .. when the festival was down on Scarborough av people could go bring there own drinks in and I get you have to make profit to fund this but there are people that arnt staying in your hotel that are not financially well off and it spoils it for them and will stop people coming . Also seating area I was watching people with mobility problems couldn't sit down as there was only an handful of seats outside .. getting searched when you come in is not on my menu if good customer service.. not really felt welcome at all and this festival weekend will probably go downhill at this rate with bad staff ect

Booked this hotel as we were celebrating 20 years as a couple and were booked to see Showaddywaddy at The Embassy in the evening.

Whilst check in wasn't available til 3pm, we were able to park up with ease and sign ready for the room so we could explore the area which was good for us, it's within easy walking distance of all amenities in a safe quiet area. Our room was ready a bit earlier which was good and was clean and comfortable. Check out is 10.30 but we were able to explore the area a bit more and didn't have to vacate the car park at that time which was useful and very much appreciated.

Lovely lounge area, great outside space to relax in and a good breakfast. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. It made it a very relaxing stay for us.

It would have been good for us if the restaurant served meals a bit earlier due to having a show booked for 7 30pm, although lounge meals were available.

The Hotel does many entertainment weekends and special breaks at great value for money..we will return.
