I had been recommended by a colleague who had visited some years ago before the Covid pandemic.

At first sight you are taken aback at the somewhat crumbling 1930s era Moderne style of this standalone hotel building.

However, once inside you receive a very hospitable welcome. You will discover that the hotel was newly built & opened in 1936 by one of the Bateman brewing family from nearby Wainfleet. An architect’s plan dated 1934 is exhibited in one of the rooms off the reception area together with photographs from that period.

There is a user operated lift available dating from 1936 that works perfectly.

The bedrooms are dated but equipped with nice firm beds, clean sheets & an abundance of spotless towels.

On reflection the breakfast was easily one of the best I’ve ever encountered. Service was excellent, the menu choices were wide (including kippers) & the resulting cuisine was delicious.

One final tip concerns parking. You approach the parking area from a narrow service road behind the hotel. Make sure that you have parked immediately behind the hotel building. Parking beyond the building takes you into the adjacent NCP car park. It is not easy to visualise this distinction between the two parking areas. Ask at Reception to ensure that you have parked in the area reserved for for hotel guests which is free

Like many of the long established hotels in Skegness, the County has suffered from the recent opening of the large Premier Inn on the sea front.

I’m an annual visitor to Skegness for an event at the Embassy leisure complex & I intend to return to the County next year.

Nice place bit dated. The rooms needs updating but tge beds were comfortable.
We had a hassle free checkin and was told about breakfast 8am to 9.30 full English (lovely compliments to the chef) and also eggs benidict rather to much hollandaise sauce but also lovely. We booked two double rooms rooms 31 and 45. 45 was a large room with 31 being a smaller but adequate room both on suite and had a nice sea views. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the pier and 10 to 15 minutes to the clock tower. There is also free parking for the duration of your stay. Overall very good

Just returned from a couple of nights staying at the County Hotel. This would have been a very grand hotel in years gone by, which can be seen with the decor. It is in need of an upgrade, which is planned, to bring it into the 21st century whilst maintaining the original style in the lower rooms, dining room, function room and bar. I will probably return in a couple of years to see how it looks after these have been completed. In saying that we found it to be very clean, with a big car park at the rear. The staff were excellent, always very helpful. Breakfast is of a very good quality with a good selection on offer, all freshly cooked to order. The waiting staff worked very hard at busy times to ensure we didn't have to wait too long. Bedrooms are spacious, had a TV, bathroom with bath and shower overhead, plenty of wardrobe space and drawers. We had a sea view and it was worth the extra paid. We had a good look around the ground floor, so many rooms, function room, bar, lounge...all showing their age but fantastic all the same, with art deco touches on view. You can imagine how grand it would have been in years gone by.....and hopefully in years to come. They are waiting for the alcohol licence to be approved so unfortunately the bar was closed whilst we were there, as we are not big drinkers it didn't bother us too much, and the lady on reception provided us with hot drinks in the evening when we relaxed in the lounge area. All in all a pleasant stay, value for money.

From other reviews. We knew that this hotel was dated, but clean. What we didn’t appreciate was just how understaffed they were, leading to long waits for keys, to answer the phone, to get breakfast. It was very frustrating. This morning there was one poor lady dealing with the whole dining room and the Manager was floating around, not helping! And then berating her for forgetting a guests orange juice, in front of all of us in the dining room. Really unpleasant for all.

This hotel is up for sale, and maybe new management is what it needs, as it’s sooo old fashioned, not just by way of decor, but also the way it’s being run. Notices saying you will be fined £500 if you take food into the rooms…. They were very accommodating in opening the bar area for you to eat your takeaway, but the posters are a joke!!

Location is good
Breakfast when it came was good
On-site parking is good
Beds were comfortable
And it is clean

I had looked at several reviews before booking this hotel for a 2 night stay so was aware it was dated. However some people seem to like this and are happy to stay here.
It did sem to tick many of my requirements .In a sea front position close to the centre and had a working lift although I had not expected it to be the original one which was installed in the 1930 s..It had good reviews for breakfast and cleanliness. We had a good sized sea view room which was clean and breakfast was perfectly adequate.
However on check in we were told that there was no available wifi anywhere in he building and they had not renewed their licence requirements to be able to open bar.I appreciate the present difficulties with shortage of staff who did their best but at breakfast ran round apologising for delays etc instead of actually serving.
First morning no orange juice ,cereal or second cup of coffee. Next morning no butter or jams which were promised but never arrived.
The management style is also dated with notices warning you of consequences of taking food up to your room or being late checking out after 10 am.
Sorry this hotel was not for us and has as been said in previous review is up for sale.

From the moment we arrived we knew we had made a great choice. The location was perfect. Everything within walking distance and if you wanted to visit surrounding places a bus stop just outside.

The reception staff, especially Daphne, were not only professional but were friendly, welcoming and totally made us feel at home. Nothing was too much trouble especially when I locked the key in the room (sorry Daphne) 🙈 The breakfast staff were lovely also and the breakfast was delicious and fresh. Thumbs up to the chef for making perfect poached eggs. Also a huge shout out to Howard who never seemed to leave the hotel and seemed to do everything but always with a smile. You made our stay really special and we will totally miss you and talking to you😘

We were in Room 45 top floor. The room was spacious and had fantastic views over the sea. Everything we needed was there including tea and coffee which the really lovely lady replenished every day. Okay the hotel needs updating, especially the bathroom, but it was really clean and all the staff were fantastic. We were so happy that it had maintained a lot of its original art deco charm and decoration.

Summary. A lovely hotel that needs updating but in a superb location exceptionally clean, gorgeous breakfast and simply outstanding friendly staff. The downside was the parking. Very limited but we parked in the adjoining car park for £6.95 for 24 hours. Despite the parking issue we will definitely be back 👍

Although this hotel is old fashioned (which I love and has some lovely features) I found the rooms very clean and accommodating. All the staff were very pleasant , helpful and polite . The bed was very comfortable. Some of our party who stayed had just finished their 100 mile charity bike ride from Leicester to Skegness and said their stay had been enjoyable and breakfast was lovely . Thank you and I would defintley recommend to stay here

Lock down has took its toll on many hotels and to be fair the county is one of them. the hotel was clean and service was ok , and staff we’re friendly .
Star of the show was the breakfast , spot on . But this hotel is in need of some tender love and care . Dated some what . Lock down has took its toll , during lock down the hotel was broken into damage caused to the bar , hence no bar facilities. Still a worth a visit though , let’s get our seaside resorts back on there feet .

The hotel had the sense of an old, classic hotel. Unfortunately due to Covid they weren’t offering evening meals or any bar service.
It wasn’t made clear on booking that the free parking spaces were VERY limited so had to park in the adjoining NCP car park for £6.45 for 11 hours.
The breakfast was great and brilliant staff
